Volunteering in Russia

Voluntary work means working in the social field for free. This allows you to experience the

social working situation in Russia. Your work situation is your main priority throughout the

exchange. You will receive a small sum of pocket money for the work you are doing. This sum is

only for your daily expenses.

You should also realize that in any kind of voluntary work the most important goal is social and

intercultural learning. Voluntary work placements are most successful for everyone if you work

regularly, so you should be responsible for the work you are doing and co-operate with your

colleagues at your project.

Before starting work you will need at least basic knowledge of Russian. The more you know the

more useful your work will be. If you don’t know the language you can hardly achieve your main

goal – intercultural learning. You can find some basic phrases for everyday life in our “National

Profile”, and some phrases related specifically to the projects in our online phrasebook, at:

Waldorf Kindergarten

PROJECT AIMS The first Waldorf School was established in 1919 in

Stuttgart/ Germany. Rudolf Steiner was not only the author

of an idea and school head-teacher, but also the founder of a

special pedagogical system, therapeutic pedagogic and

medicine, and a whole spiritual school. The main idea of the

Waldorf pedagogical system is that childhood is a unique

period in a person’s life: it’s impossible to consider this age

in the same way as adulthood. It’s very important to give

children the opportunity to develop in a natural way,

according to their age and abilities.

Nowadays there are 30 Waldorf Secondary Schools and 60 Waldorf Kindergartens in Russia.

12 years ago a small group for younger children was established on the basis of Samara Waldorf

Secondary School. There are around 100 children aged 2 ½ - 6 ½ years old in the Samara

Waldorf Kindergartens at the moment. All of them are brought up with love and care in a warm

atmosphere of joy, music, songs, theatre, stories, and festivals.

The services provided by volunteers contribute greatly to the creation of a loving atmosphere,

which is so important for these children’s development.

Public Organization «Down Syndrome Association» PROJECT AIMS In our country the diagnosis "Down syndrome" turns out to

be a verdict which leads to the loss of parents in most cases.

Nine out of ten families reject their children immediately.

And only five of these nine live more than one year. Only

10% of children with Down syndrome live in families. The

rest of them are raised and educated in orphanages.

Some families did not want to put up with this situation and decided to establish a public

organization of parents and speech therapists. The mission of this organization is to protect the

rights of the disabled as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES The activities of the organization are focused on:

protection of disabled children’s rights,

participation in expanding laws and other juridical acts related to the rights of the

disabled,

providing psychological support to children and their families,

consulting families on the questions of disabled children’s rights,

providing information on the rehabilitation and medical treatment of disabled children,

creating a library of specific literature,

organization of seminars and training for parents and specialists,

organization of leisure time for disabled children.

6000 residents of the Samara region (1600 patients and

(MS).

Founded by a group of patients and enthusiastic doctors in 1996, the organization is one of the

oldest and most influential Russian centres in both the professional and public spheres in the

fight against the socio-economic problems caused by MS.

SORS aims to improve the quality of life experienced by sufferers of MS to allow them to
