Work Experience
Purpose and value
• get out of school and classrooms• work with some adults who won’t mollycoddle
you the whole time• experience real-world rules vs flexibility• understand practical applications of learning
The best Work Experience programme in Dubai.
Don’t get too hung up on what
• getting experience matters more than the specific experience…
• …please don’t complain or try to change• we are structuring more long-term placement
opportunities for 6th form progression
• if it prompts you as a parent to offer a placement, please say so!
Teacher visits
• we try very hard to visit every student, although visits will be shared for some
• visits depend on students arranging to be free• visits are educational and affective not
procedural • Tue to Thur, not first 2 days
• students should be ready to show the visitor round and explain the business to them
Following up
• reflection book goes with you• active debrief session the day we’re back• tutor follow-up work in weeks to come
• WRITE TO THANK THEM AT LENGTH• (is there an ongoing opportunity for you?)
• make the experience count reflectively
Approach it right
• punctuality, appearance, courtesy• unquestioning willingness• go-beyond mindset: questions and quality• initiative• offer solutions not problems• be an asset and impress them• get invited back, and get us invited back
This ought to be the most interesting thing you’ve yet done in your educational career.
We’ve tried to make sure there are opportunities that do that, but you need to
make it work that way too.
Health and safety
• don’t do anything unsafe• it’s OK to say if don’t feel able to do a thing• let us know if you don’t feel looked-after
• use the Serious / Medical Emergency number ONLY in appropriate cases:
055 409 8523
“Unhappy” experiences
There is a really small chance things might not go so well. If so,
1. Think about how you can cope with the new challenge and try to change.
2. Talk it out at home, don’t moan at the placement. Parents – don’t contact the workplace directly.
3. Contact CRU / EPE / MDR. We can facilitate. You won’t get an immediate response.
Make sure you
• let the placement know the visit time you’re told so you’re free then (or re-arrange)
• use your workbook consistently, in depth• remember: help for 6th form placements is
preferential depending on how well you use this opportunity
• discuss in depth with parents and peers daily

Practically, now
• generic questions will be fielded now– pedagogy: MDR– practicality: CRU
• hang around for individual questions
