Tips & Techniques...

Choosing a Theme...

Whilst the standard Wordpress theme gives an acceptable layout and look to your blog, it’s a good idea to install a new

‘theme’, essentially a template, which will give your blog a more individual look.

There are many of themes out there and you can preview them at the Wordpress Theme Directory, which you can link to

by clicking on the ‘Appearance’ link in your Wordpress toolbar.

The most important thing to bear in mind when choosing your theme is that you choose one that is SEO optimized i.e. a

theme that Google likes and will rank higher. Those themes that are optimized will say so when you’re browsing through

them.

Some premium themes cost money, but the majority are free and will work just as well for what you need.

Plug-Ins...

Once you’ve uploaded your theme, the next thing to do is upload the ‘All-In-One SEO Pack’. This is a free plug in that will

help your theme achieve its maximum SEO.

You can find the plug in within the Wordpress Plug In Directory, accessed through the 'plug in menu' on the Dashboard.

There are also FAQs, support forums and video tutorials that support this.

General SEO Advice...

There are a multitude of ways to make your blog as attractive as possible to Google and the search engines but here are 5

simple tips that have been proven to be quite effective.

1) Permalinks...It is crucial to get this right. Head to Settings > Permalinks. Tick the ‘custom structure’ box and the enter thefollowing: /%sample-post%/This will clean up your permalinks and make them attractive to Google.

2) Headings...Make sure that your headings are in order so that Google sees the keyword(s) you’re trying to rank for.

- Your blog title should be an <h1> tag.- Only make your subtitle an <h2> if its keyword rich, otherwise don’t give it a header tag.- Post titles should also be <h2> tags.- Sidebar titles should be maximum <h3> or classed as non-headers.

Although most of the Wordpress themes you upload will have this correct already, make sure that your headings

are correctly set. This is particularly relevant to the sidebar headings, as you won’t want Google thinking that titles

such as ‘Archive’ and ‘Categories’ are as important as your main keyword phrases.

3) Images...Remember to use images and tag images in your posts and pages – they will attract Google's image spiders. Don’tforget to label them using keyword-rich file names for maximum visibility with Google.

4) Enable Comments...Although you might not want people commenting on your content, it can be considered to be a good idea to enablecomments on some or all of your blogs or pages. This will encourage search engines to spider over your contentregularly as there will be a steady flow of comments and thus fresh content.

5) Search Engine Blocking...Sounds obvious, but make sure that Google can see your blog! Under Settings > Privacy on the Dashboard, make

sure that the appropriate box is ticked to allow search engines to see your content. Otherwise all your efforts will

be in vain.
