Monday: 30 minutes of spelling instructiono Spelling Pattern Pre-test given on Fridays (Students who score
90% or better receive the challenge list for their weekly list post-test (same pattern). All students will have 10 new pattern words on their test Friday. Total words that teacher must have prepared: 30
10 words for the pre and posttest 10 words for the regular study list 10 words for the challenge list

weekly spelling pattern sent home (sample included at bottom of document)
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 30 minutes of spelling lessons/activities

Friday: 20 minutes of spelling assessmento Students take the weekly spelling test containing their 10
word list that they studied for the week and 10 words following the weekly pattern that were given on the pretest.

Strategy:To spell a word with the VCCV pattern, divide the word between the two

Strategy: A contractionis a short way of saying or writing two or more words. An apostrophe takes
the place of one or more letters.
Dear Parents,
In word study this week, we are practicing words that have the long a sound, like cake. We will be focusing on the various ways that the long a sound can be spelled.

At home, you can help your child practice making words that contain the following word families. The beginning sound could be a single consonant or a consonant blend, like we’ve been studying in the past weeks. (See pattern words to study for examples.)

Students should study the 10 assigned pattern words below for the spelling test on Friday. On the final test, there will be an additional 10 words that contain various long a patterns as well.
