…From the Pastor
Known as the Mother of Thanksgiving, Sarah Josepha Hale was born in 1788, a native of New
Hampshire. She wrote several books but is mostly recognized as the poet who created the
nursery rhyme about a girl named Mary and her lamb, which you probably sung as a child.
What is not widely known about Sarah is how she campaigned for 36 years to see the government declare a
day solely dedicated to gratitude. Sarah was an advocate of thanksgiving and became the catalyst for the
United States implementing a day of gratitude as a national holiday. While not everyone has the same benefits
and comforts afforded to others, as Christians, we can be challenged that whatever our circumstances,
Thanksgiving is a day in which we can offer worship to an amazing, good and holy God.
During the Great Depression, President Roosevelt attempted to holster the great economic collapse by moving
up the date of Thanksgiving. The idea was to give people more time to Christmas shop, thus boosting profits
for businesses and merchants. The change didn’t hold, and Thanksgiving reverted to its original date; however,
the drive to increase spending among Americans remained, with the creation of a special day dedicated to
mass spending and stocking up on Christmas purchases: Black Friday.
Probably not what Sara Josepha Hale had in mind when she campaigned against “the want of all things!”
The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1950’s by Philadelphia police to describe the worst working day of
their year. The Saturday after Thanksgiving was the annual date for the city’s Army/Navy football game. Every
year loads of people flooded into the city during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to celebrate – and do their
Christmas shopping the day before the game – requiring the attention of Philadelphia’s whole police force.
Looter took advantage of the crowds, preying upon business owners and taking off with their merchandise;
such rampant crime after a national holiday dedicated to gratitude. A not-so-nice aspect to our infamous
shopping day.
Now, joining Black Friday, are Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday. One is dedicated to online shopping, the
other to “giving back”. Some feel donating to charity has become an afterthought to materialism, and maybe
they are right to be concerned. Because after we spend all of our money on acquiring more things, often we
can only spare a few dollars to give to those who truly need it.
In Deuteronomy, we read about the practice of offering the first fruits of a harvest to the temple. The people
worshipped God by giving thanks for the fertile land he had given them; and to receive forgiveness of sins.
Sometimes the offerings were used to feed the poor, orphans, and widows.
Here’s a good question to consider this Thanksgiving…does the retail industry dictate the way you shop and
spend? More importantly, does it dictate how and when you give to those who are struggling to clothe and
feed themselves?
May we all be reminded of God’s love for us and may we all show our gratitude and thanks to God through our
actions.
1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 – Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s
will for you in Christ Jesus.

Lynn Johnson is coming to our church to speak to us about
Human Trafficking
What a great honor to have her come and share and work with us.
We make rugs to sell to donate to this ministry.
A lunch will be provided on Nov. 17th after church.
Please come and bring your friends!
Hello. I am Lynn Johnson, the Assistant Secretary for Children and Families at the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We know human trafficking de-
stroys precious lives and threatens our Nation’s security, public health, and the rule
of law. We care because our programs serve some of the Nation’s most vulnerable
children, youth, and families. Together, we can assist survivors and prevent human
trafficking. If you or someone you know may have experienced forced labor or com-
mercial sexual exploitation, know there is help. You can call the National Human
Trafficking Hotline at 888-37-37-888 or text BEFREE (233-733). #WeCareBecause

Resale Shop
The Resale Shop will be hosting its annual Holiday Customer Appreciation Day on November 16th from
9:00-2:00. This replaces our Thankful Friday that we stopped having last year. We do have a lot to be
thankful for. Over the last few months we have seen more new faces in the store and our sales have
increased and so have our donations.
Although we are a service or mission project for our church and community we are also a business, and
sometimes we have to talk business. With Christmas right around the corner, and our biggest sales sea-
son, we are very short handed and need volunteers. We have a handful of women who are faithfully
working with that unstoppable spirit that the Resale Shop was built on. However, just in a normal week
our staff can feel overwhelmed and tired. With the increase of customers and donations over the holi-
days it is just going to get busier.
Our small stocking team works two days a week, Monday and Friday. With Christmas items needing to
be priced and placed on the shelves we will more than likely being working three days a week. Our
stocking team also works two to three shifts a month. With your help we might not have to add that
third stocking day. Also our customers really enjoy our friendly spirit and the welcome we extend to
them. When checking out customers chat and tell us what is going on in their lives, their concerns and
joys. With the increase in customers we are not able to spend as much time with them. If we had more
team members on a shift, especially during the Christmas season, we could have a little more time to
put our merry on and have a ho-ho-ho in our voice.
The increase in customers is noticeable as they are lining up outside the store waiting for the doors to
open. There can also be a line waiting to check out and occasionally we have had to have two check
out areas. We have had a list of people who do not work a regular shift but would substitute when
called and a few people who wander in from time to time to help with stocking. We have reached a
critical point that we do not have a list of subs and need regular help with stocking. This mission of the
Resale Shop is primarily women but guys we do not discriminate. Many of the guys help with unloading
the shed, taking our recycle to the curb and taking shifts.
The Resale Shop has supported the church and community for 50+ years they now need your support.
We offer free training, a friendly atmosphere and sometimes cookies…come and be part of this wel-
coming presence in our community.

Church Council Notes – from the Pastor
Pastor will be out of town on vacation from Sunday October 13th through Saturday October 19th.
During this time, Reverend Ray Music will be available for any pastoral care issues that may
arise.
October 20th is Charge Conference and will be held at LaPorte UMC at 6pm. I would love to
have as many of us in attendance as possible.
October 20th will also start our series on giving. A Stewardship campaign along with a Pledge
Drive will be the focus. I would like for ministry leaders to offer information in the Family Life
Center before and after service on how people can volunteer to assist in different areas of
the church. For example – Karen Jerde might have a poster about the music ministry invit-
ing those with musical talents (singing, playing instruments, etc.) to join “the band”. Letting
these people know that they can come to a Wednesday night practice to check it out. Other
areas of ministry in the church that could benefit would be – Back Pack Ministry, Resale
Shop, Greeters, Nursery, and FLC Event Coordinator – just to name a few.
Pledge cards for 2020 will be made available starting on Oct. 20th and we will be asking
for the congregation to submit their pledges on November 3rd. They will also have
the option of mailing in their pledges. On Nov. 3rd, the congregation will be asked to
bring their pledge cards forward as they come for communion and drop them in a
box.
The purpose behind the pledge drive is to help us create a budget for the church and
give us a better picture of what we can do and develop a vision on how to be even
more missional.
November 3rd will be a busy Sunday. Along with celebrating the congregation submitting their
pledges, we will also be celebrating communion, All Saints Day, and someone representing
Kairos will be saying a few words.
I would like help with orchestrating All Saints Day as my experience is extremely limited.
Thank you all so much for the work you do. You are all appreciated!
In His Service,
Pastor Toby Guill

Sunday School Teachers are needed. Thank you to all those who have volun-
teered to teach and care for our children. We still need a few more people to fill in occa-
sionally as a substitute. Teaching children can be a blessing to the teacher as well as the
children. They are the future of our church.
