Word 2003 provides several ways of applying font formatting:
The Formatting Toolbar has buttons to apply font, size, some font styles, and font color formatting.

Shortcut keys enable you to apply some font formatting.
The Font dialog enables you to apply all kinds of font formatting. To bring up the Font dialog, you can highlight text, then right click your mouse button and a pop up window will appears. Click on Font and the Font dialogue will appear.

To apply font formatting with the Font dialog, choose Format > Font or press Ctrl-D.
The Font dialogue window will appear providing many options for applying various font styles. There are three tabs across the top, one for Font Formatting, Character Spacing, and Text Effects. From this dialo you can do the following:

Choose Font: Select a font from the Font box.
Apply a Font Style to the text by choosing a style from the Font Style box. Font Size can be selected from the Size box.
Font Underline Styles and colors can be selected by choosing an underline style from the Underline Style drop down selection box. Colors may be applied to the underlines by choosing a color from the Underline Color selection box.
Font Effects like strikethrough, shadow, outline, etc., can be selected by checking the appropriate boxes in the Effects area of the Font Dialog box. They can be previewed below in the Preview area.
TIPS It's usually easier and seems to take fewer clicks if you type your text first and then apply the formatting later. The Preview area will display what the text will look like with the selected formatting applied.
