    Books are still a big drawIN the Cotswold AuctionCompanys spectacular sale onJune 21 in the Cheltenhamsaleroom, the book section was inrisk of being overshadowed but the300 lots held their own in dramaticfashion.

    A famous work by Robert MartinMontgomery TheIllustrated Atlasand Modern History of the World,Geographical, Political,Commercial and Statisticalpublished by John Tallis (1851)commanded a great deal ofinterest. This respected workpublished by one of the morefamous engravers of the timecontains more than 70 maps, manyfolding, including street maps ofNew York, London and,Manchester.

    There are also geological maps ofwaterfalls and a railway map ofGreat Britain. All boast beautifullyengraved vignettes showingbuildings, landscapes and evenfigures relevant to the placeshown.

    Despite missing its original frontcover and the frontispiece, itrealised 3,400 for its delightedvendor, going to a telephone bidder

    against the internet and the room.A complete small eight volume

    half leather bound set of SirWilliam Jardines NaturalistHistory reached a hammer price of2,000. Decorated with superbhand-coloured plates, this was acollectors delight.

    Six large lots of The IllustratedLondon News also created somefierce competition in the room andon the internet.

    The early volumes of this mostfamous of magazines containsuperb colour plates, some folding,and also large engravings of

    historical moments of the time.They were mainly bound in blackcloth, although some volumeswere in contemporary cloth andgilt covers. However the prices forthe six lots ranged from 260 to680, realising more than 2,500 forthe these fascinating views onworld events.

    William Nicholson is anillustrator known for his strikinggraphical work and woodcuts.AnAlmanacof Twelve Sports and TheSquare Books of Animals, bothfirst editions, realised 480.

    The specialist section of booksagain reached higher thanestimated which shows that evenin these more difficult times, thereare still collectors avid for therarer titles. Full results for the sale

    Sniffing out a beautiful collectionTHE scents of a summer gardenmight have provided an apt titlefor the antiques and fine art saleat Brightwells on June 22 thatincluded a selection of outdoor

    furniture and statuary and, incontrast, a sparkling collection ofceramic perfume bottles.

    For the elegant conservatory, abronze figure of a nude woman,her arms outstretched andstanding 41 inches high made byH A Pitt Roche sold for 480.Another good garden centrepiece,a three-tier cast iron circularfountain, sold for 300 with a pairof large cast iron urns making330. A Victorian wire-work two-tier flowerpot stand sold at 180while a large composition stonesphinx achieved 180.

    Early stone troughs withattractive patination alwaysappeal, a two-division exampleselling for 210 while a D-shapedtrough made 150. A sandstonebirdbath achieved 320 while an18th century sandstone urn made

    290. An 18th century capstanstyle bird feeder with a dish topstanding 32 inches high sold for250: a pair of seated lions madethe same price.

    Scent bottles are a veryspecialised collecting area whereprices remain firm but fairlystatic. In this sphere, rarity isoften of more importance in theprice structure thancraftsmanship and aestheticappeal. Fortunately both werepresent in a blue and white cameoglass bottle with floral decorationand a silver mount stampedBirmingham 1897 that sold for

    580. A Burmese glass globularbottle, Birmingham 1888, sold for150. The dark velvet-like blue ofBristol glass was seen in an

    octagonal rose water bottle withthe characteristic gilded scrolleddecoration that made 110 while aminiature Bristol blue glasspendant bottle of acorn shapesold for 75. A cut green overlaidglass double ended bottle made140 while an elegant red casedBohemian bottle engraved with adog in a landscape went at 170. Asilver fluted spiral bottle,Birmingham 1889, made bySamuel Mordan sold for 130 witha silver seated hare bottle, London1903, achieving 430. A rare scentbottle in the form of a group ofblue and white willow pattern

    plates, London 1886, made 230.The ceramic section continues

    to gain strength after severalyears of decline. A nine-inch

    engraved glass marriage gobletachieved 720. A small group ofMeissen porcelain figures provedpopular, a pair showing childrenplaying at household tasksmaking 520 while a figure of ashepherd sold for 380. A girl witha shell sold for 320 with a groupof a boy and girl with grapesachieving 420. A grouprepresenting a pair of seatedyoung women sold for 500despite heavy restoration to onefigure. A group of four childrenplaying with a garland just 6inshigh and restored made 680.

    Other Continental porcelain

    included a set of six Sevres cupsand saucers with floral panels ona green ground that sold for1,450 with a Dutch Loosdrechtcup and saucer making 240. A

    Vienna plate painted with a semi-nude woman seated on a rock soldfor 100. A pottery egg paintedwith a stylised female face andwith a metal hanger, believed tobe of Turkish origin, was spottedby several internet buyers in theEast and was contested to 1,950.

    A Royal Doulton stoneware vaseled the English ceramics,achieving 2,300. An 18th centuryWorcester kidney shaped dish,Lord Henry Thynne pattern, soldfor 240 while a pair of Derby puttiof the four seasons sold for 220. Ahorse decorated Wedgwood jasperware plate achieved 320 with agarniture of three early 19thcentury cache pots selling for 480.A Spode two handled basket inImari pattern was bought for 130.

    Decorative items and works ofart included an art deco bronze

    dancer, 13 inches high, at 1,000and a mirror backed tinsel pictureentitled Horn as Casper making460. A painted wooden doublesided icon-like panel sold for 400with a pair of watercoloursshowing idealised Sussex thatchedcottages painted by JamesMatthews going at 200. A portraitof a young midshipman, HenryFanshawe Davies (1837-1914)painted circa 1850 sold for 400.Traditional antique householdfurnishings were led by an oakdresser with a rack that sold for720. The next sale for antique andeffects will be held on July 27.

    APPEAL: A Victorian silver liddedblue and white cameo glass scentbottle featuring a floral pattern,made in 1897, was sold for 580.

    LEADING THE WAY: A pretty RoyalDoulton stoneware vase ofbaluster form decorated childrenin moulded ground sold for 2,300.
