Worcester Woman's Club was founded on December 9,1880. Prior to their founding, women'sclubs were mushrooming all over the east ever since 12 years before when women on the pressin New York were barred from the 1868 press banquet honoring Charles Dickens at Delmonico'sPiqued. The women formed a club of their own, the Sorosis, the first secular woman's club inA m e r i c a .

In Worcester the club movement sprouted as a result of a two-day observance in October, 1880,of the 30"' anniversary of the First National Woman's Rights Convention held in Worcester in1850. After the celebration, three women began to think in terms of a Woman's Club; Mrs.Oliver F. Harris (Mary Cross), wife of a dentist, Mrs. Avery Rowland and her sister, Sarah A.Henshaw. On December 9"*, 22 woman organized the Worcester Woman's Club at theresidence of Dr. and Mrs. William A. Knight.

Collection contains the records of the Worcester Woman's Club. Material includes; scrapbooks,photographs, yearbooks, secretary reports, executive board minutes, club house associationminutes, stock, certificates, programs, financial records, committee reports, insurance records,correspondences, by-laws and audio recordings. The majority of the materials are dated pre-1 9 6 0 .
