November 22, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first trimester has ended. Last Friday we celebrated positive behavior at our PBIS assembly.

Teachers are busy working on report cards to be sent home on Friday, December 6th. We hope that

you will find the district report card and the parent rubric very informative. It shows you how your

child is progressing towards standards in each subject area, as well as providing you with behavioral

information and comments.

In addition, the Specials areas (Art, Music and P.E.) will also be providing assessment information on

the report card. Please utilize all of this information as a tool to indicate areas of success and areas that

might need more attention as we continue to work together during the school year.

A reminder that Thanksgiving week is as follows: Monday 11/25 is a full day of school. Tuesday

11/26 is an early dismissal at 11:00a.m. (PM kindergarten students attend in the morning; no school

for AM kindergarten students). Wednesday 11/27, Thursday 11/28, and Friday 11/29 there will be no

school. We wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Woodview School!

Sincerely,

Cathy Santelle

Principal

It's time for the Six Flags Read to Succeed

Challenge!

Six Flags Read to Succeed forms were sent home with all students on a yellow piece of paper this week. It's a great way for parents and teachers to encourage students to read for fun and information outside of their homework. Each child that reads for six hours will earn one free ticket to Great America. Simply have your student write down the titles of the books he/she is reading (listening to) and the amount of time that they read. The deadline to turn in their Read to Succeed reading logs is February 12, 2014.

So.... those 10 minutes your child is looking at Highlights at the doctor's office would count. As would the 10 minutes they spend reading on your e-reader while they are waiting for their extracurricular activity. Reading cereal boxes, graphic novels and magazines all count. Listening to a parent read or enjoying a story on Tumblebooks or Bookflix through the public library website also contributes to their total. If your child reads to younger siblings or buddy reads, they can both count the time. The children have three months to complete the six-hour challenge. Forms can be turned in to their classroom teacher as soon as the challenge has been met. Extra forms for the program can be found in the school office.

Art News

I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout the year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at [email protected].

There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Baby wipes, yarn, fake flowers, buttons, beads, pipe cleaners, pencils, glitter, fun erasers for prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, washable markers. Thank you so much for the parents that have given the Art Room supplies! I really appreciate all your love and support.

Kindergarten The students will learn about the habitat a fish lives in, as well as the parts of a fish. From this knowledge, they will have to create a fish in its habitat. To make their fish, the students will paint their hand, and transfer their handprint to paper, known as printmaking. Then the students will transform their handprint into a fish. To create the sea, the students will learn how to use watercolor paints and different techniques to create an ocean. The students will also listen to a read a long video on the story, The Rainbow Fish. The last part of their project is to add shiny scales just like the rainbow fish.

First Grade The students just finished learning about how to draw a cityscape. In this next art project, the students will learn how to draw a landscape. The students will discuss in the beginning of the lesson the difference between a cityscape and a landscape. Then the teacher will take them on a step-by-step drawing on how to draw a landscape. The students have to make sure to include: rocks, grass, hills, trees, water, animals, mountains, and a sky. When the students are done with the drawing, they will learn about different types of lines. There are many different types of lines: wavy, zigzag, spirals, curly, straight, thin, thick, and dotted lines. The students will then use this knowledge and turn their landscape into a creative world of lines.

Second Grade The students are traveling in art to the country of Mexico. They are learning all about the cultural celebration of “The Day of the Dead” or “Dia De Los Muertos.” The students will listen to a story all about that day and learn about some of the food that is made, some Spanish words, and the cultural activities that are done on the Day of the Dead. The students learn that the Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrating the life of past loved ones, honoring the spirits.

In the art project, students will be creating is their own sugar skull where they will decorate it with flowery shapes and designs. The Second Graders will be using a new art media, plaster craft, to construct a 3 dimensional mask for their sugar skull. They will sketch out their flowery designs of a template first. Then the students will take their design and use colorful sharpie markers on the plaster craft mask to create their very own sugar skull.

Third Grade The students will be learning about the history of stained glass windows. They will take a journey through the Gothic Period, Art Nouveau movement, and the 20th century to learn about different types of stained glass. The students will also learn about a couple famous stained glass artists: Louis Comfort Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright,

and Marc Chagall.

Page 10: Woodview PTO - Community Consolidated School …ww2.d46.org/wv/newsletters/wv112213news.pdfUpcoming Events Date Place Event 11/26 WV Early Release; PM Kindergarten attends 11/27 WV

The students will then take this information and apply it to their artwork. The students will first draw a self-portrait on a piece of paper that has a frame like stained glass. Then the students will have to break up the picture to make it look like a stained glass window. They will also learn about symmetry within their frame design. After the students draw their idea, they will then take glue that has black paint in it, and outline the picture on a piece of recycled lamination plastic. The last step is for the students to color in their stained glass. They will use sharpie markers to make the color transparent. The students will also learn about color choice in their stained glass window. At the end, it will be a perfect display in a window.

Fourth Grade The students are finishing up their first art project that was inspired by the artist Keith Haring. The next project the students will be learning about the art elements: form and value. They will be comparing shapes and forms and determining which ones are 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional. The students will also learn that a value scale is when color changes from lightest to darkest. These elements of art will help the students understand that in order to draw a form like a sphere, they need to use value. They will then take this knowledge and apply it to drawing a dimensional snowman.

Physical Education

The first few months have been exciting in Physical Education at

Woodview. We have finished up a few units such as basketball, soccer, floor

hockey, and even our first round of fitness testing.

One of the new programs we are starting this year goes along with the

fitness testing. We are introducing FitStats to our 3rd

and 4th

students. This

program will store a student’s fitness scores throughout his/her time at

Woodview as well as the rest of their time in the district since the other

schools all have FitStats. Each time the students go through a round of

fitness testing, the scores will be entered into this program and individual

student reports will be sent home to show the improvements that your son or

daughter have shown in their fitness levels since the last fitness testing

session.

Along with the fitness data, the reports will give suggestions on how

students can improve their fitness levels outside of PE.

We just want to remind everyone that since the weather is quickly changing on us, to come prepared for PE. Please

remember to send a pair of gym shoes along with your child so they can change in their classroom before class.

Thanks!!!

If you ever have any questions about upcoming units or activities, feel free to email Mr. Feldman or Mr. Burns. We are

happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Music News

We are singing and playing in music class!

Full Day Kindergarten is exploring their voices.

We are learning the proper way to use our voice, and sing correct pitches. To get students singing, we are playing games, and instruments to accompany songs. Throughout the unit, students are expected to sing by themselves for the class,

as well as with the class. These will be simple songs, and fun for the students, so please don’t be nervous! Once again this year, the Full Day Kindergarten students will be joining 1st and 2nd grade for their music show. See information below! First grade is starting to sing with “solfege” (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). This helps them

develop a musical ear. Right now we are working on “Sol and Mi.” It’s surprising how many children’s songs are developed around these two notes! Students have also just finished a

unit on steady beat vs rhythm, so feel free to ask them to keep a steady beat while listening to a song in the car, or clap a rhythm of common things around the house, like “Ap-ple” or “Wa-

ter-mel-on.” Second Grade is starting to sing, and play in “ostinatos,” which are basically two different things happening at once. They are also continuing their work with “solfege” syllables (de, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). These skills will help them sing in a choir, as they get older! Students also just finished learning about dynamics, like Forte (loud) and Piano (soft). These dynamics are necessary components for creating a soft beautifully melody, or a loud scary theme. Third grade has started recorder! Recorders will be sent home on music weekends with students for practice. Please help me in my efforts for getting the recorders back to school after the weekend! In school, I am teaching the third graders the proper way to play, as well as how to fix any issues they are having while practicing. The number one issue is the holes on the recorder are not covered properly. The number two issue is blowing too hard. Please look on my website for videos to help students practice outside of school!

http://www.d46.k12.il.us/~smithtyler/SmithMusicClass/Recorders/Recorders.html Fourth Grade is playing recorder for the second year! We are reviewing songs from last year, and learning a few new songs. Please read the third grade message above if your students are still struggling with recorder, and visit my website!

Mark your calendars:

The 3rd and 4th grade concert this year is Thursday March 20th at 6:30 pm

The Full Day Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade concert this year is

Thursday April 10th at 6:30 pm Please e-mail if you have any questions! Sincerely, Tyler Smith

Motivating Children to Learn Self-

Care Skills

Teaching children to wash their hands, use the restroom, and choose healthy foods is part of learning, but for children to develop lasting skills, they need to be motivated to embrace healthy choices in their lives.

1. Make Learning Health Skills Fun – Use materials children find interesting. For example, when teaching hand washing use soaps with different smells or foams. With dental care, the flavor of the toothpaste can motivate children, so try different flavors to make brushing teeth more enjoyable. Choices for sports and exercise are virtually limitless. Consider a child’s interests and strengths when selecting activities. Does the child enjoy individual sports such as tennis or running or do they prefer group sports such as soccer and baseball? Most sports involve social interaction during practices and competitions, so children not only are learning a health skill, but they are learning social skills such as good sportsmanship. 2. Motivate through Role Models – Use pictures of role models to inspire children to be healthier. Some children look up to siblings or peers while others find athletes or community figures more inspiring. Use examples of role model’s behaviors to demonstrate activities children should incorporate in their lives. To truly motivate children, use examples that are unique to them. For example, if a child loves animals, discuss how veterinarians wash their hands to keep themselves and the animals healthy. Show pictures of well liked athletes and talk or have children write about how exercise and healthy eating are important for playing well. Point out how a sibling or peer likes to eat certain healthy foods. 3. Use Visuals - Use visual reminders for skills like hand washing, exercise, and healthy food choices to keep health top of mind. Use images as a way to discuss health or to remind children to follow through with a skill. For older children working on specific health concerns, have them select a goal and develop a chart for monitoring progress towards goals, such as exercising twenty minutes a day or eating healthy fruits and vegetables three times a day. Post the chart in an easy to access location so children are consistently reminded of their healthy behaviors and goals. 4. Point Out Benefits – Help children understand the ‘why’s’ of self-care. For example, discuss how germs spread and how hand washing and using a tissue can prevent illness. Talk about the preventative measures of brushing teeth. Let children know how healthy food choices affect their energy level and ability to attend in class. By having a better understanding of why they are asked to do certain things, children are more motivated to learn and retain healthy behaviors.

5. Reinforce Healthy Choices and Actions – Use a reinforcement system such as verbal praise, a chart showing progress, tokens, or a small prize to motivate children to learn new skills. In addition to verbal reinforcement, tangible reinforcement may be necessary for some children to grasp a new concept. Eventually the tangible reinforcement may be reduced until the verbal reinforcement or natural consequences (e.g. after you wash your hands you can go get your lunch) are all that remain.
