(Woodstock, NY) Sept. 24, 2011: The 12th Anniversary Woodstock Film Festival Maverick Awards

Ceremony was held tonight at the historic Backstage Studio Productions in Kingston, NY. The festival, whichbegan Wednesday, Sept. 21st, will close Sunday September 25th, 2011, celebrating 12 years of exceptional

independent film, panels, concerts, events and parties, with the best of the best in the indie film world. 

The ceremony was emceed by cult favorite comedian/actor/sitcom writer/musician Brendon Small with livemusic by Paul Green's Band of Monkeys. WFF Awards ceremony guests, presenters and award recipientsincluded Fisher Stevens, Vincent D'Onofrio, Tim Blake Nelson, Meera Gandhi, Mark Ruffalo, Tony Kaye,Ellen Barkin, Timothy Hutton, Lisa Gossels, Barbara Kopple, Stephen Nemeth, Deirdre Haj, Hugo Perez,Todd Wider, Marie Therese Guirgis, Jonathan Gray, Amy Gossels, Joe Muszynski, Lori Singer, Isil Bagdadi,Chris Wedge, Bill Plympton, Signe Baumane, Ellen Kuras, Sabine Hoffman, Sabine Krayenbuhl, Doug Abel,Debra Granik, Richard Abramowitz, and Cinetic Media President John Sloss. 

A special Tribute to Gary Winick was included in the ceremony, to honor the filmmaker and pioneeringproducer who passed away in February of this year from brain cancer at the age of 49. Winick rose to famedirecting mainstream films like Letters to Juliet and 13 Going on 30, but is perhaps more well-known for hisindependent films and for co-founding InDigEnt , a company that produced nineteen independent digital filmsover the next decade, including Winick's own Tadpole, which sold for $6 million to Miramax at the 2002Sundance Film Festival. Winick was an early supporter of the Woodstock Film Festival and a frequentparticipant in WFF programs. The tribute was presented by WFF Exec. Dir. Meira Blaustein, Producer JohnSloss, Academy Award® Winning Actor/Producer Fisher Stevens and Academy Award® NominatedCinematographer Ellen Kuras. 

  The Lee Marvin Award for BEST FEATURE NARRATIVE: On The Ice, Dir. Andrew O.MacLean. Presented by Academy Award® Winning Actor Timothy Hutton, Academy Award®nominated Director Debra Granik, Marketing/Distribution Executive Richard Abramowitz. 

  The Maverick Award for BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY: Semper Fi: Always Faithful , Dir:

  The Haskell Wexler Award for BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: On The Ice, Director of Photography: Lol Crawley (Winner) Presented by Academy Award® Nominated CinematographerEllen Kuras."Again, the selection of the best photography is very difficult. The one I have chosen, On The Ice, shot 

by Lol Crawley, is noteworthy in a number of ways. Shot where the sun doesn't set until August, wesee people moving in frames of negaitve space in incredibly difficult and artfully conceived shots. The

 party interiors offer some smooth handheld work, where the style fits the visual storytelling in contrast 

with the formal, colder frames. All this is just me trying to give words to my subjective reaction to the

visuals. And since I'm privilaged to give this award, you can see that Lol Crawley's work deserves this

Woodstock Award." Haskell Wexler

The Festival will wrap tomorrow night, with the Closing Night screening of  Detachment, directed by TonyKaye, WFF's 2011 Honorary Maverick Award recipient. The film concludes five days of celebrating"fiercely independent" film, art, music, and free expression in the arts colony of Woodstock, NY and theneighboring towns of Rhinebeck, Kingston, and Rosendale.
