CM Daniel Dromm (D-Jack-son Heights, Elmhurst), along withseveral elected officials and com-munity members, unveiled a streetsign at 73rd Street and 34th Av-enue in Jackson Heights co-nam-ing the street for Mary Sarro, aformer Community Board #3 Dis-trict Manager and beloved JacksonHeights community activist.

“Mary Sarro was a belovedmember of the Jackson Heightscommunity,” said Dromm. “Hercontributions to the neighborhoodrange from serving on the board ofdirectors of the Jackson HeightsBeautification Group, to being amember of the board of the 115thPrecinct Community Council, tohelping to clear the way for theborough’s first lesbian and gaypride parade in 1993. Few couldequal her commitment and lovefor Community Board #3. She issorely missed by all.”

“Mary Sarro was a wonderfulwoman — stubborn, opinionated, sweet and she had a heart of gold,”said Democratic District Leader, and Sarro’s long-time friend,Maureen Allen. “She was alsotough as nails when she neededto be. I lost a very dear friend andthe community- at -large lost a

who lives in Queensbridge knowthat our City has allocated everysingle cent we could to make surethat Western Queens has a park thatrivals Central Park in Manhattan orany other park in the City of NewYork. Queensbridge Park is a jewelwithin Western Queens. Today wehave commenced another projectwhich is part of the ongoing revital-ization of Queensbridge Park.”

The Parks Department will holda public scoping meeting to gatherinput on what amenities are de-sired, before starting their designprocess. Some amenities that couldpossibly be included are a moderncomfort station, storage space forthe athletic teams that use theplayfields year round, and officespace for Parks Department staff.

“Parks is grateful toCouncilmember Van Bramer forallocating this funding to continuemaking improvements toQueensbridge Park,” said Com-missioner Lewandowski. “I lookforward to working with him andthe community on creating a scopeof work and design for this project.”

Since being elected to repre-

sent the 26th District, Van Bramerhas delivered on his promise torestore Queensbridge Park to itsoriginal state for local residents.During his term in office the Coun-cil Member has secured nearly $6million for the overhaul of thepopular Western Queens park.Recently Van Bramer also secured$3.4 million to begin repairing thedilapidated Queensbridge seawall.Once the restoration of the seawallis completed next summerQueensbridge residents and NewYork City park goers will onceagain be reconnected to the EastRiver waterfront after a decade ofdeterioration and be able to fullyexperience one of Queens’ mostheavily utilized parks.

Over the past three years inoffice the Council Member hasallocated over $200,000 to LICYMCA which provides WesternQueens children with sportsleagues that utilize QueensbridgePark. The announcement was apart of Council Member VanBramer’s effort to revitalize theentire park for local residents dur-ing his first term in office.

friend and advocate as well. Iwill forever be thankful and grate-ful for the 35 years of friendshipthat we shared.”

The Sarro family moved tothe Heights in 1952. After finish-ing her studies at New York Uni-versity, Mary Sarro served as vol-unteer secretary of PlanningBoard 3 – the precursor to today’scommunity boards – from 1971until 1977 when a Charter changecreated community boards. HelenMarshall, then a Board 3 mem-ber, urged Sarro to become dis-trict manager of CommunityBoard 3 where she served from1977 until 1996.

Mary was an early supporterof lesbian, gay, bisexual, andtransgender rights in the commu-nity. When the Queens Pride Pa-rade committee was formed in1992, Sarro took the group intothe 115th Precinct to assure thepolice the board wanted the pa-rade in the community.

After retiring from the board,Sarro stayed active in the commu-nity, serving as Sergeant at Armsfor the 115th Precinct CommunityCouncil. She was also part of theNorth Queens Homeowners CivicAssociation, the United Commu-

nity Civic Association and the Jack-son Heights Beautification Group.Sarro was a founder of theCatherine M. Sheridan Senior Citi-zen Center and was instrumentalin creating the 82nd Street Busi-ness Improvement District.

Sarro considered a careerhighpoint the establishment anddedication of the Pat Deignan 34thAvenue Mall, financed exclusivelyby then Borough President ClaireShulman. Among her other accom-plishments are trees and bouldersin Landing Lights Park, the cre-ation of one-way streets to enhancetraffic flow, installing additionaltraffic lights at dangerous intersec-tions and the solution of the prob-lem of homeless people under theBrooklyn Queens Expressway.

Under Sarro’s watch, the com-munity board fought successfullyfor a new police precinct for Jack-son Heights (the 115th Precinct)and for neighborhood preservationthrough the establishment of a Jack-son Heights Historic District andthe Jackson Heights Beautifica-tion Group.

Sarro spent hours in her officeand at home, battling for the en-forcement of livery cab laws, newschools for the overcrowded dis-trict and improved relations withofficials at the Port Authority andLaGuardia Airport, as well as doz-ens of quality of life issues.

“You have to care aboutpeople to do this job properly,”Sarro said in an interview in mid-2009. “You have to understandthat everyone has a problem withsomething or other, like too muchnoise, not enough trees, over-crowded schools and sanitationissues,” Sarro said. “And whilethese things might not rank veryhigh on the city’s list of priori-ties, they are very important tothe people who live here.”
