Recently, residents along 65th Place have come forward to Van Bramer’s office citing a signifi- cant an increase in noise pollu- tion and smog caused by truck traffic along the residential corri- dor which houses numerous single-family homes and mul- tiple-family dwellings. During the press conference, numerous local residents pointed out structural damage sustained by their properties cause by the vibra- tions from large trucks rumbling down the two-way street, traffic congestion, a decline in air quality and an increase in noise pollution. Currently, according to the De- partment of Transportation (DOT), 65th Place is a designated “No Truck Route” but lacks the neces- sary signage needed to make truck traffic aware. “These trucks that are barreling through this quiet residential neigh- borhood are not only utilizing this route illegally but they are also pre- senting a serious hazard to the qual- ity of air for the people of Woodside,” said the Council Mem- ber. “Enforcement must be upheld in order to put an end to this issue and the Department of Transporta- tion can help us address this imme- diately by installing the proper signage to deter trucks from coming through this quiet neighborhood.” Earlier this year, Van Bramer contacted the DOT requesting that “No Truck Route” signs be installed along 65th Place be- tween Queens Boulevard and Maurice Avenue. Van Bramer also requested that the 108th Pre- cinct increase traffic enforce- ment along this quiet residential corridor to ensure truck traffic and noise pollution is directed away from local streets. “The fact that this is already a ‘No Truck Route’, yet trucks con- tinue to plague local residents is simply unacceptable,” said Con- gressman Crowley. “In addition to noise and congestion, this traffic also pollutes the air and poses a serious safety risk to residents. I support Councilman Van Bramer’s call for the City to install signage that makes it clear that trucks are not allowed on this street, as well as increased enforcement by au- thorities. We must take every step possible to make our community an even better place to live.” (continued on page 4) Great Wall Of Woodside, Phase II Completed by David Rosasco On Saturday, July 21 st , the Woodside Neighborhood Associa- tion (WNA) along with 30 volun- teers completed the north part of the Great Wall of Woodside Project. The wall itself had for many years become a symbol of urban decline, with graffiti defacing the surface, and frustrating many who attemptedto preserve the community free from vandalism. In May 2012, the WNAworked with the LIRR to come up with a fun community project thatmight inspire the local residents to work together towards creating athing of beauty and linking the wall to the other greening and treeplanting projects ongoing in the area. Thus the idea of the Great Wall ofWoodside was born.

A dedication for the wall, including to whom it will be dedicated, anda commemoration for the individuals who rose to the challenge and paidfor all of the paint supplies will be held as part of Phase III, which willbe announced at a later date.

Tree Care Projects Continue In WoodsideMultiple Organization Pursue

Practical Environmental Projects

by David Rosasco

On Sunday, July 22nd, the Woodside Neighborhood Association(WNA), together with the Partnership for Parks, TreesNY and TheNew York City Parks Department launched yet another tree careproject for the new trees planted under the Greening Western QueensProject, an ongoing program of tree planting and care for the life of thetrees. The day’s focus was on proper watering techniques, as well asfurther mulching, weeding and tree pit cultivation vital to the success-ful growth of street trees, which are under far more stresses than treesin parks or forests.

Kyle Richard of the Partnership for Parks has spearheaded the projectsince its inception in 2011, Yi-Wen Lin of the Parks Departmentcoordinates the supplies and provides expertise on forestry issues whileSam Bishop, Educational Director of TreesNY focuses on selectingspecies and training local residents on proper tree care.

Members of the Woodside Neighborhood Association have alreadybeen trained by this coalition of specialists in trees, and on Sunday, 25volunteers joined in the program to target the new street trees along thebusy intersections of Woodside Avenue. Under the guidance of theprofessionals, water was taken from the hydrants and placed into thebags around the trees. New trees need about 15 to 20 gallons of water aweek, so the message to the residents of Woodside is if you see a streettree, especially a newly planted one where the tree bag is empty and thesoil is dry, try giving it some care.
