Investment and M&A

• In the first 9 months of 2018 there was a total $4.25B of venture capital invested across 87 companies in the AV (Autonomous Vehicle) sector. This compares to $2.1B of venture capital invested across 104 companies for the same period in 2017. There has been a total of $14.4B of venture capital invested into 183 AV companies over the last 3 years.

• Over $100B has so far been invested by industry into the development of autonomous cars. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology will eventually morph into AV technology.

• Venture investments into companies developing AV/ADAS related technologies can be segmented into a small number of categories per the market map on pages 30-31 and analysis on pages 16-23.

• There was a decrease in the number of new AV/ADAS companies being formed in 2018,with the majority of investment going into later stage rounds for more mature companies.

• In the first 9 months of 2018 there were 17 M&A transaction in the AV/ADAS sector compared to 19 M&A transaction compared to the same period last year. The deal size for many of these transactions was not reported which generally means that they were less than $100M in transaction value.

• By far the largest of these M&A transactions was Intel’s acquisition of Mobileye for $15.3B in September 2017. This was Intel’s second largest acquisition ever, just behind their acquisition of Altera in June 2015 for $16.7B.

Safety & Security

• There is currently a vigorous debate within the automotive industry as too how safe is “safe enough” for autonomous vehicles. This debate has been fueled by recent AV/ADAS related fatalities - both Uber and Tesla cars have been involved in self-driving fatalities over the last 24 months.

• There are approximately 1.3 million road traffic deaths each year and 90% of these deaths are caused by human error. Is AV/ADAS technology “safe enough” if it can significantly reduce this number? Or should it be judged on the basis that even one fatality caused by AV/ADAS technology is an unacceptable outcome? Are we prepared to live in a world in which people are occasionally being killed by robots (autonomous cars) so long as the number of these deaths is significantly lower than the number currently caused by human driving?

• European, Chinese, and American companies are all taking different approaches to the issue of risk. The European automakers are mostly waiting to deploy autonomous cars on public roads until the AI software controlling them can be shown to be safe and the EU has issued legislation covering the deployment and use of AV cars. In contrast, US and Chinese companies are racing ahead with the introduction and testing of autonomous cars on public roads.

• About half of model year 2012 automobiles were equipped with backup cameras. On March 31, 2014, four years past its deadline, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would require all automobiles sold in the United States built beginning in May 2018 to include backup cameras. In the future, it is likely that automatic emergency braking (AEB) and driver monitoring will be mandate in the near future.

• Over 25 car hacks have been publicized since 2015. 1.4M cars were recently recalled in the largest cyber security incident to date. Cyber security for AV/ADAS cars is of critical importance. When your computer is hacked it can be an expensive inconvenience. When cars are hacked people die.

• The application of sensors to AVs is not limited to outward focused sensors. A number of companies are now developing (and OEMs are selling) driver monitoring systems (DMS). As the name suggests, these systems typically monitor the driver to determine such things as “is there a driver in the drivers seat?”, “are they awake and paying attention?”, “what are they looking at?”. DMS systems are increasingly considered to be a critical component of ADAS and, as we move towards full AVs, will likely expand to monitor vehicle occupants for passenger security and comfort.

• Inward and outward facing cameras are also starting to play a role in vehicle security by recording accidents and vehicle break-ins.

• It is impossible to attend any of the numerous autonomous car conferences today without being struck by the extraordinarily complexity of autonomous car design. Humans can rely on “inference” and “common sense” to know what to do if they encounter a situation that they have never seen before (such as a private airplane that has had to make an emergency landing on the highway ahead).

• In contrast, AI (deep learning) controlled AV cars need to be trained on enormous amounts of sensor data. If they subsequently encounter a situation that is completely new to them, they may have no idea what to do. Perhaps we will end up needing a completely new approach to AI to fully solve the problem of ensuring autonomous car safety. There is a general consensus that AV technology is still at the research phase of development

• There is currently no consensus on how an AV/ADAS car could be comprehensively tested to ensure it is adequately safe.

• Meanwhile GM/Cruise (and others) are planning on launching driverless robo-taxis in San Francisco in 2019. With a fresh $2.75 billion commitment from Honda, GM-owned Cruise has secured $5 billion so far in 2018—more than the total amount of VC funding that's gone into autonomous vehicle businesses around the world this year.

• Consumer sentiment is a significant issue that remain to be solved by the industry. In a recent survey, over 60% of those surveyed said that they either don’t want or are apprehensive about autonomous cars on the road.

• A number of companies are developing so-called “full stack” AI software for autonomous vehicles. Full-stack companies design products that can be vertically integrated into a complete solution (autonomous car). To be considered a full-stack solution, a company must have a big-data practice, a software engineering practice, and a user design practice.

• Companies positioning themselves as developers of “full-stack” solutions for autonomous vehicles include the major semiconductor companies (e.g. Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm), and the developers of robo-taxis (e.g. Crusie/GM, Baidu, Uber, Waymo, Zoox, Pony.ai, AIMotive,…).

• While a number of companies would like to position themselves as pure AI software companies in this space, the industry is not yet sufficiently mature to support device (sensor stack) independent software.

• As we move from personal transportation as a capital purchase to personal transportation as a service, it is possible that the automobile industry will start to evolve in some of the same ways that the PC industry evolved. The most profitable companies will be the ones providing the full-stack software (operating system), the central AI processors (CPU), and the cloud services. Sensors will become increasingly commoditized and manufacturing will be increasingly outsourced (bending metal will not be a significant piece of the value). At the top end of the supply chain will be the transportation-as-a-service (TaaS) providers – here we can expect to see today’s automotive OEMs battling it out with the new robo-tax companies and today’s car rental companies. The value of today’s OEM brands in the TaaS business is unclear.

• While the “brains” of AV/ADAS cars are the powerful semiconductor processors running sophisticated deep learning software, the “eyes” of these cars are the multiple sensors they are being equipped with. These include visible-light cameras, ultrasound, LiDAR, and RADAR.

• For reasons primarily of cost, today’s consumer cars equipped with adaptive cruise control primarily use visible light cameras and radar for their ADAS functionality. In contrast, the less cost-sensitive robo-taxis currently under development typically use cameras, LiDAR, and radar.

• There is no single sensor modality that meets all the requirements of an autonomous vehicle. While humans are equipped with only two image sensors (our eyes) and a very powerful processor (our brain), the processors and AI controlling today’s autonomous cars are so much less capable than our brain that these cars need multiple sensors to enable them to safely navigate in complex traffic conditions and challenging weather conditions.

• Thermal (infrared) imagers can discriminate between animate and inanimate objects much more easily than other sensor modalities and, for this reason, will likely become ubiquitous on AV/ADAS cars in the future.

• There is something of a LiDAR bubble in the market today with over seventy different LiDAR companies having been created and funded over the last three years (see previous WCP report on the LiDAR industry).

• LiDAR is unlikely to see much deployment in consumer vehicles until the price to OEMs comes down to under $200. While solid-state flash LiDAR may ultimately meet this price target, it is unlikely that this technology will meet all the OEM requirements for another 5+ years.

• A new RADAR technology called Imaging Radar looks promising for AV. Radar is traditionally used to display the position and motion of reflective objects by sending out a radio wave signal, and then detecting the direction and delay of the reflected signal. Imaging radar on the other hand attempts to form an image by measuring the intensity of the reflected signal to determine the amount of scattering. The registered electromagnetic scattering is then mapped onto a two-dimensional plane, with points with a higher reflectivity getting assigned usually a brighter color, thus creating an image.

• AI has breathed new life into the founding and funding of semiconductor companies.

• After years of consolidation there has been an explosion of new semiconductor startups with names like Cerebras, Graphcore, Wave Computing, Horizon Robotics, CambriconTechnologies, and DeePhi from the US, Europe, and China.

• Cambricon (China) has already become the first AI chip “unicorn” (startup valued $1B+) with a valuation of more than $2.5B after their recent Round B financing.

• The artificial intelligence (AI) chipsets market is expected to reach USD 43.3 billion in 2023 from USD 6.8 billion in 2017, witnessing a CAGR of 33.9% during the forecast period 2018 -2023.

• Last year (2017), VCs (with corporate investors) invested more than $1.5B in new AI chip startups – doubling the rate from the prior year.

• Mobileye is a vision-based ADAS technology company providing warnings for collision prevention and mitigation. Mobileye’s technology is largely based on vision algorithms delivered to the OEMs and Tier-1s in the form of an ASIC. Much of the rest of the auto industry is pursuing deep learning (technically a branch of AI) approaches to AV and ADAS

• Connectivity to the internet is widely seen as a critical component of autonomous cars. This technology is known as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) or vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. An early accepted standard is the dedicated short range communications (DSRC) system based upon the IEEE 802.11p standard. It lets vehicles talk to one another and exchange location, speed, direction, turn intents, and other relevant factors that will help vehicles avoid collision. Links to nearby road side units (RSUs) will also eventually provide weather, road, traffic, and construction work data to further fill the needs for self-driving.

• Forbes magazine recently suggested that autonomous cars won’t happen until 5G data networks are ubiquitous. AT&T have announced plans to start rolling out a 5G service to a small number of cities this year. It is likely to be at least 5 years before 5G networks are ubiquitous.

• Many of the major OEMs have been slow to recognize the ROI to be gained by adding approximately $50 to the car’s BOM in order to add wireless connectivity to their cars. This has started to change rapidly as the OEMs pursue new internet service revenue streams. Statistica forecasts that by 2025 100% of all new cars sold will be connected to the internet

• Gartner predicts that by 2020 there will be a quarter billion connected vehicles on the road, enabling new in-vehicle services and automated driving capabilities.

• China has yet to have much of an impact on western car markets. With the advent of EVs and autonomous vehicles this is about change dramatically.

• All of the three largest technology firms in China (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent –collectively known as the BAT) are getting into the self-driving car business. Baidu is currently considered to be the leader of the self-driving car market in China.

• China will likely be the largest market for self-driving cars. In 2017, 29 million new vehicles were sold in China, more than US, Japan, and India combined. The number of new vehicles sold will reach 37 million by 2025 assuming a 3% annual growth rate (3% is a conservative estimate as the CAGR in the past 5 years is 8.57%).

• Chinese Self-driving car startups fall into these 5 fields: full-stack solution, AI chips, LiDAR, computer vision, and Electric Vehicle.

• China passed the US last year (2017) in terms of the value of artificial-intelligence financing deals (see chart opposite).

• Baidu is investing heavily into its autonomous vehicle projects and has formed partnerships with Microsoft and Intel, and carmakers BMW, Ford and Daimler.

• Apollo, an autonomous vehicle platform that Baidu launched only a year ago, has rapidly grown to be one of the leading players in the AV industry. Baidu intends to build Apollo as “Android for automated vehicles.”

• Baidu describes Apollo as “a complete open automatic driving ecosystem” that can help partners in the automotive industry and autonomous driving to combine vehicle software and hardware systems to quickly build their own complete AV system.
