Dear Woodland Families,

Our school is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association. We’re joining the fight against our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers — cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

On February 14th, 2019 our school will hold a Kids Heart Challenge (formerly called Jump Rope for Heart) event. These events are held at schools nationwide and not only help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health, but they also raise funds to support vital heart and stroke research as well as educational programs.

The American Heart Association is dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier lives. The money we raise helps people in our community learn how to prevent heart disease and stroke and also helps our local patient care. Our school will qualify for gift certificates for free physical education equipment based on the amount we raise, and the students will qualify for individual thank-you gifts based on the donations they collect.

Family and friends can support your child’s participation by making contributions. However, we ask that children not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. If your child receives any cash donations, please convert those to a check before turning in the collection envelope. All checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. The deadline for your student’s collection envelope to be turned in is January 18th, 2019.

To help your child raise money the fun and easy way, you are encouraged to use the online fund-raising tool found at www.heart.org/jump and click the link “Register Today!” Make sure to register under Woodland Elementary in Kimberly. Your child can customize a Web page with images and include a message about why he or she is participating in the Kids Heart Challenge. Next, send e-mails to friends and family to ask for support. After you have completed raising money online, print your child’s online donation report and include it inside the collection envelope. Refer to the collection envelope for more detailed instructions on how easy online fund raising really is.

Also, don’t forget to ask your child’s donors if their employers have matching gift programs. This is an easy way to increase the donations your child collects. To find out which companies will match donations to the American Heart Association, please visit www.matchinggifts.com/aha. All matching gift forms should include your child’s name and school name so the donations can be properly designated.

The Kids Heart Challenge is a fun event that helps our children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives. We have students, staff and families that are or have been affected by heart disease. We appreciate all the support you can give. This year our goal is $11,000. Last year we raised $10,000.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Hermus and Mr. Englebert Woodland PE Department

You may or may not be aware that the Kimberly Area School

District has two clothes closets that are located in two of our

schools. One of the clothes closets is at Mapleview

Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are

in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact

Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is

frequently being offered ways to support our families if they

should fall upon economic hardship. Please reach out to your

child’s teacher or school counselor if you are in need of any

assistance throughout the year.

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
