Independent Schools for Boys and Girls aged 3 - 11 Years
Citation preview
After many years in the teaching profession I had been driven by a belief that there was a more effective approach to education. Woodhill School was started in a very modest way as a small but select school. My philosophy was simple: A happy school atmosphere, small classes and high expectations of the pupils.
It seems that many parents shared this view. From a handful of pupils the school has steadily grown and now caters for over two hundred and fifty pupils on two broadly similar sites at Botley and Chandlers Ford.
The face of education has changed extensively over recent years, and Woodhill School has endeavoured to be at the forefront of new innovations such as information technology while being careful to keep the essential elements which have made us so successful.
We employ traditional teaching methods with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy.
There is a strong community spirit within the school and good behaviour and courtesy are paramount
I believe that each pupil is an individual, with his or her own requirements. The school caters for a wide range of abilities, each pupil receiving the curriculum appropriate to their needs. Every pupil is encouraged to achieve the highest standard of which they are capable.
As a preparatory school, one of our main functions is to prepare pupils for entrance examinations to the secondary school of parents' choice. Our pupils' record of achievement in this area is outstanding.
Perhaps the greatest source of satisfaction for me is meeting past pupils of Woodhill School. Those who return to visit, to tell of their fond memories of the school and how the thorough grounding and happy, courteous atmosphere has benefited them throughout their educational life and beyond.
Dear Parents
Our Nursery Department caters for pupils from the age of three. Admission procedures and attendance are flexible to allow time for children to feel secure in their new school. A variety of timetable options are available, ranging from a few mornings per week for the youngest pupils to full time for Kindergarten pupils. A daily tea/prep service provides supervised care until 5:30pm.
The personal and social development of pupils is nurtured in a caring environment. Children learn how to work, play, co-operate with others and function in a group beyond the family. The development of personal values such as self confidence and respect for others are encouraged within the happy atmosphere of the school.
The nursery and kindergarten classes aim to provide an early start into literacy and numeracy. The teaching of reading, writing and counting skills is given high priority and many pupils achieve a high standard in these areas. .
The school likes to work closely with parents to support children's learning. Children's progress is regularly monitored and there are school reports twice yearly as well as annual parents evenings, open days and special events to which parents are welcomed.
Children's knowledge and understanding of the world is developed through an exploration of the living things, objects and events in the natural and man made world. They talk about their findings, often recording them and questioning why things happen and how they work.
