Woodbridgian WeeklyNational Quiz Competition

Our senior quiz team eased impressively past Framlingham recently by 1100 points to 470. Everyone in Captain Charlie Green’s team of Will Clarke, Chris Long, Cole Turnbull and of course Charlie himself, contributed excellently, with Cole in particularly electrifying form, especially on the starter questions. Now for the regional semi-finals - opponents yet to be confirmed: the match may well be at Woodbridge, and makes for entertaining viewing so watch this space for news of when and where.

Now, by way of a warm-up:

Minorca and Majorca are part of which island group? How many children did Queen Victoria have?Selene, Artemis and Diana were all names during the classical period applied to the goddess of what natural phenomenon?

Answers at the end!

Woodbridge Junior Chess Open, Sunday 29 November

Junior Concert

Our junior musicians, quite rightly, had St Mary’s bursting at the seams, the audience (which generously donated £238.43 to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) delighted to be part of celebrating a fine term’s work. The concert also happened to give us the first hint of Christmas Woodbridge-School-style...

The Seckford Sinfonia’s Marches, first Through the Mud, then Hungarian, were delightful, and raised smiles and pulses in equal measure. Some of the percussion instruments were clearly as much fun to play as they were a surprise to hear! Corelli’s Vivace, played by the Year 7 string quartet, was wonderfully dignified by contrast, yet equally spirited and impressive.

Soloists Joanne Garnett (clarinet), Rebecca Yardy (violin) and Charlotte Dinwiddy (flute) were each quite outstanding playing German, Tchaikovsky and Fauré respectively, while Stringvitation, the Flute Group and the Year 9 String Quartet (Boccerini’s Minuet and Trio played with considerable maturity, having clearly benefited from Miss Jessica Hall’s guidance in the strings competition masterclass just the week before) all played with marvellous aplomb and variety further to exemplify the extraordinary range and talents of our young musicians.

And so to the double finale: first the foot-tapping swagger of Just Jazz: great fun and much enjoyed (watching the Year 7s and 8s in the audience bopping innocently and enthusiastically in their seats was a hoot!); and then the Junior Choir romping through the Old Testament via Goliath and Daniel, and ending with... yes... our hint of Christmas: It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Indeed it was, and the joy with which this final number was delivered summed up a wonderful early evening’s entertainment.

Our enormous thanks and congratulations go to all the performers, and of course to the conductors and teachers of the music department under Mr Penny’s sure leadership who have helped them achieve so much.

Thanksgiving in Great Bealings

The Chamber Choir was delighted to be invited to share in St Mary’s Church Great Bealings’s Service of Thanksgiving to commemorate the birth, 500 years ago, of Thomas Seckford, and to celebrate the completion of major building works to a Church which dates back well before Seckford. The weather outside might have been cold and grey, but inside all was light and warmth (in spirit if not entirely in the skin!). Full to the gills with parishioners, and full of song and speech, the Church looked marvellous - what a treasure it is, and, as we learnt, one of many hundred such jewels we are so lucky to have in Suffolk. Norman Porter and Charles Barrington spoke passionately about the history of the Church and of Thomas Seckford, the legacy bestowed, and the duty this generation bears to maintain and build upon the benefactions and work of so many generations; the Rev Celia Cook added her own thanks, and asked us to relish the opportunity for peaceful contemplation and the honouring of others that the Church, and so many like it, offer us in our increasingly frenetic, selfish, secular world. And to thank them for their performance of three pieces from the period of Sir Thomas’s birth, she also offered the Chamber Choir delightfully appropriate and unexpected gifts - very gratefully received!

The congregation, clergy and Choir shared a very special morning; our thanks to St Mary’s for such fine hospitality. May St Mary’s continue to thrive.

Suffolk Youth Orchestra

Many congratulations to Jonathan Ferguson, Josh Cole and Harrison Cole who have won places with the Suffolk Youth Orchestra, the flagship of Suffolk County Council’s extensive programme of youth music opportunities, and one of the finest of its type in the UK.

Success in Suffolk Youth League Hockey Championship

Four of our Year 7 girls won the Girls U12 Suffolk Youth League Hockey Championship. Clara Simpson, Olivia Buchanan, Molly Marshall and Ella Walker were playing for Ipswich East Suffolk (IES) Hockey Club. It’s a three tournament competition and IES became the overall champions for 2015. They played some very impressive hockey winning their last game 8-0 in 12 mins. They all received medals and certificates will be handed out next week.

1st Hockey v Ipswich High: won 2-0

Lily Felton reportsThe 1st Team played Ipswich High School on Tuesday afternoon, and despite a sluggish start to the game, we managed to improve our intensity and tenacity quickly. We maintained a high proportion of ball possession throughout the match, allowing our forwards to attack strongly on the right and left sides. Our defensive line, as solid as ever, were not required as much as usual, enabling the attack and midfield players to push forward and attack the ‘D’ frequently. We scored a well-deserved goal in the first half, thanks to a brilliant cross from Imy Craig on the right-hand side, into the ‘D’ to Victoria Williams, who safely pushed into the goal. Even though the girls were tired after an energetic first half, we continued to play with force and awareness. Credit to Nicole Buckingham, Verity Jackson and Georgina Warren for considerable runs down the right and left sides, leading to secure a second goal, giving us a comfortable lead. Well done to all the girls for being so hardworking and eager to score! Special mention goes to Georgina Warren who was given player of the match, due to her tireless work in midfield.

U15B Hockey v Ipswich: won 4-0

Jemima Hill reportsThe match started off slowly, however, once we settled into the game, the pace increased. We had the majority of the ball possession but struggled to convert it into a goal. Rosa McInerney played excellently, consistently getting the ball down to our end of the pitch and keeping it away from the opposition. In the middle of the first half Jemima Hill scored a goal and we finished one-nil. The second half including some great defence from Louise Farthing (sweeper), who cleared lots of balls, sending them back to our end of the pitch. With great teamwork we managed to score another goal. By now the weather had turned, and it was raining and very windy, but we managed to get another goal, scored by Anya Trevor-Pallares. With minutes left, the opposition had a short corner, but fortunately for us the receiver missed the shot, and the ball was picked up by Jemima hill who drove it down to our end of the pitch and passed it into the D. It was received and a shot was taken, but rebounded off the goalie. Anya picked it up and scored a great shot right into the corner of the goal. The match ended four-nil. Player of the match was Millie Cave who played excellently throughout the game, and thoroughly deserved it.

U14A Hockey v Framlingham: lost 3-0

Maudie Peel reports The U14 A and B teams went to play away at Framlingham. Unfortunately both Framlingham teams were very strong and resulted in two losses for us but we still managed to play really well.

The A team started out with a very good first half, only conceding one goal. We managed to start out defending one of the scariest short corners ever and clearing it out wide. We managed to play very defensively and only let in a goal in the last five minutes of the match, with wonderful attacking on the left from Tessa Lye and Emma Hendry.

In the second half, we still managed to play really well. Unfortunately there was a very tricky player on the Framlingham side who sneaked in to score again. Although we did manage to get it further up the pitch, we didn’t manage to score any goals but Amy Graham did really well in the middle and on the right. Great defensive work from Sarah Barker, Joanne Garnett and Amelia Potter. It was a good match and was unfortunate to lose it 3-0 but everyone played really well. Player of the match was Emma Hendry for great skill and good attacking.

U14B Hockey v Ipswich: drew 1-1

Despite the bitter cold and sleet our girls played on undaunted, persevering through the weather to create some great chances up front… but their goalie was good, imposingly smacking her stick on her pads when she wasn’t in the thick of the action. At last we broke through for Freya Nyberg to score a brilliant goal, supplied by some great mid field play from Molly Webster. Half time came, and with it at last the weather began to take its toll…. Fewer chances for us and one for them earned Ipswich the draw. But our girls did themselves proud, especially in the cold and only having eleven players and no rolling substitutions. Well done!

U14B Hockey v Framlingham: lost 2-0

This was a game where we seemed to be constantly under pressure but we held our own and fought for everything. Poppy Fletcher, Freya Huxley, Molly Webster and Flo Scott played brilliantly; but even their valiant efforts and the front half of Everest couldn’t have stopped the Framlingham short corner, hit with perfect timing and flying like a rocket. Freya Nyberg, Sophie Drew, and Lucy Hudson all played well and although we lost the girls can be proud of their efforts.

Junior 1 Hockey

The girls have remained unbeaten this term, winning all 8 of their matches played during the course of the season. The team scored 30 goals and conceded only 5. Despite not qualifying for the next round the Junior 1 team was also unbeaten in the U13 County cup (where matches were shorter than normal). At the cup the team played 5 matches, winning 2 and drawing 3. They scored 7 goals in the process and conceded 1.

A 100% record for a team who gave 100% in all practices and matches. The team scored a total of 37 goals in competitive matches, conceded 6. They won 10 matches and drew 3. Ianthe Hill was top scorer for the team with 12 goals, followed by Sophie Graham (8) and Clara Simpson (7).

U12A Rugby v Copleston

The U12A team has just completed their season and signed off with an 11 try victory over Copleston. Henry Waldron bagged 4 tries to clinch the top try scorer of the season, Tom Turner picked up 2, and John Hendry, Will Franklin, Mak Zie, Seb Gifford and Tom Harper all managed to get on the score sheet. A great achievement to win 6 of their 7 fixtures. The future is bright.

OW NEWSPelham Performs in the Great Hall of Durham Castle

Last Saturday, Pelham Etherington OW played Mozart’s piano concerto in D minor, K466, in the Great Hall of Durham Castle, with the Durham University Chamber Orchestra. His performance was “in fond memory of John Stafford”. He gave an exciting and accomplished performance; dramatic in all the right places, reflective in others, but with an overall sense of the grandeur and architecture of this amazing piece. Well done to Pelham!
