    Alder Lumber

Grown on the west coast between Alaska andSouthern California Alder is commerciallyharvested in the moist regions of western Oregonand Washington. This Birch relative is fine-textured and light weight. The grain pattern issimilar to Birch, Cherry and Soft Maple; it can alsobe finished to blend with Walnut or Mahogany.

    Ash Lumber

Best known for its stability and impact resistanceAsh lumber is widely used for ball bats, hockey sticksand tool handles. Ash is also well suited for furnitureuse and remains a popular wood for kitchencabinets. The heartwood ranges from tan to darkbrown and the sapwood will run white to off-white.

    Basswood Lumber

Basswood can be found throughout most of theeastern United States and is one of the softesthardwood species in commercial use. Noted forfine, even grain its exceptionally stable.Heartwood is very light brown and the sapwood isnearly white. While its ideal for carving andturning Basswood is also used for picture framemouldings, wood novelties and other objects requiring a clean looking, light colored wood.

Beech LumberBeech is hard, heavy and strong. Its well suited forflooring, furniture and food containers. Beechaccepts stains and finishes well and can be used asan alternative to Hard Maple although darker in colorand slightly more coarse in texture. Heartwood runspale brown to reddish brown and the sapwood isusually distinct and light colored.

    Birch Lumber

Birch is especially popular for furniture, fixtures, cabinetry and doors. The heartwood is cream or lightbrown and the sapwood is a yellowish white. Lumbercan also be sorted for White Birch (all sapwood oneface) or Red Birch (all heartwood one face). Birch ismoderately heavy, hard and strong.

    Aromatic Cedar Lumber

The spicy cedar-like smell makes this specie widelyrecognized. Most commonly used in closets, storagecabinets and chests the lumber will have a white to creamcolored sapwood with light brown to red heartwood.Aromatic Cedar lumber is graded No. 1 Common and willhave 3-4 average widths and run 5-6 long.

    Cherry Lumber

Cherry is considered one of the premier Americancabinet wood species. Its a fine-grained, hard and strongwood. Cherry can be finished to glass-like smoothnessand is exceptionally stable. Small gum pockets are anormal characteristic. Heartwood lumber will appearreddish-brown and the sapwood will be a lighter yellowbrown color.

    Cypress Lumber

Lightweight, fine-grained and easily worked Cypress is used for millwork, cabinets, wall paneling, and furniture. It holds paint well and is resistant tochemicals, dampness and insects. Cypress lumber is light orange/brownin color.

    Hickory Lumber

Hickory is the hardest, heaviest and strongestAmerican wood. The heartwood is pale to reddishbrown and the sapwood is white. The grain is straightbut can be wavy or irregular and the texture is coarse. Most commonly used for furniture, cabinetry andflooring.

Hickory and Pecan are members of the Walnut family

and are so closely related that individual specimensof Hickory and Pecan cannot be identified with any certainty.

    Mahogany Lumber

The heartwood of mahogany is pale brown or pink to dark reddish brown.

The grain is straight and the growth rings are distinct. Texture is mediumand uniform. Mahogany is easy to work and produces very good results inall operations. Most commonly used in furniture, cabinets and flooring.

    Soft Maple Lumber

Soft maple heartwood varies from light to darkreddish brown and the sapwood is greyish white. The wood glues, screws, and nails satisfactory. Itsgrain is usually straight and can be stained to anexcellent finish. It is good for steam-bending and islow in stiffness and shock resistance.

    Hard Maple Lumber

Hard maple heartwood varies from light to darkreddish brown and its sapwood creamy white with a

slight reddish brown tinge. The wood is hard andheavy with good strength properties. The wood hasa close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained, but it can also occur as curly, fiddleback, and birds-eye figure. Hard maple screws and gluessatisfactory but pre-boring is recommended fornailing. Most commonly used for furniture, kitchen cabinets, butcherblocks, ballroom and gymnasium floor.

    Red Oak Lumber

Red Oak heartwood is a pinkish reddish brownand the sapwood is white to light brown. Thewood is hard and heavy, with medium bendingstrength. The grain is mostly straight andcourse textured. Pre-boring is recommendedwhen nailing and screwing. Red oak can bestained to a good finish and a wide range of

    finish tones can be used.

    White Oak Lumber

The name White Oak is a misnomer becausethe wood is not actually white in color butrather tan or light brown. The hard and heavywood is very good for steam bending and hasgreat wear resistance. The grain is mostlystraight and has a medium course texture. Itstains to a good finish and a wide range of

    finish tones can be used.

    Furniture Grade Pine Lumber

The sapwood of pine is white to pale yellow andthe heartwood is cream to light brown. Thewood is very workable when it comes to nailing,

gluing, sanding, and carving. Paint, stain orvarnish can be applied to a good finish. Tightsound knots are admitted without limit infurniture grade.

    Pine Shelving

Pines sapwood is white to pale yellow and the heartwood is cream to lightbrown. The wood can be stained, varnished or painted to a good finish. When it comes to building shelves, pine is not only strong but very durabletoo. Pine shelving come in a variety of sizes but the standard is 12.

Hardwood Plywood Core OptionsMost of our hardwood plywood inventory is Veneer, MDF or Particleboardconstruction. These are the most commonly used substrates. There arehowever alternative options available. Please contact your salesrepresentative for pricing and availability.

Veneer Core - Made up of wood veneer inner plies (usually Poplar),Veneer core is light in weight and offers good strength and stability. The

drawback is that thickness variance can be +0 / -3/64; this is the HPVAindustry standard specification. Veneer core remains the most popularoption because of the all wood construction and light weightcharacteristics.

Particleboard (PBC) - This is the least expensive of the core options.PBC offers a smooth, void-free surface for veneer lay-up. PBC providestight thickness tolerances but is heavy; a 3/4 panel can weigh as much as100lbs. PBC has the least amount of structural strength compared toother cores and is subject to the greatest amount of expansion if exposedto moisture.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) - MDF offers great stability and isthe least likely to react when subjected to a measurable change inenvironment. It offers a very smooth, void-free surface for veneer lay-up.MDF has greater strength and screw holding properties than PBC. LikePBC however, MDF is one of the heavier core options. This core isespecially well suited for thin panel applications such as door inserts andpaneling.

Woodstalk - This composite core is manufactured from wheat-straw.There is no added formaldehyde in the raw materials or the resin used tobond the core. It offers a very smooth and void free surface. ColumbiaForest Products uses a no added formaldehyde glue line to bond theveneers to the core. Woodstalk with veneer overlay is offered exclusivelythrough Columbia Forest Products.

Classic Core I - Constructed of veneer core inner plies with PBC cross-bands. It offers similar strength and stability to veneer core but has thevoid-free surface quality of PBC. Excellent substrate for the thin slicedwoods and even rotary woods, reducing the potential for core transfer. This core tends to offer more consistent tolerances than standard veneercore.

Classic Core II - Similar to Classic Core I except the cross band is MDFrather than PBC. Columbia introduced this core in response to customersissues with the potential for chip out with Classic Core I.

Jaycore - The two biggest issues end-uses have had with veneer core inrecent years are thickness variation and core transfer. As a result,Columbia introduced a panel which addresses both of these challenges.Jaycore is a calibrated platform. The core is sent through a size sanderbefore laminating the face and back veneers. With Jaycore, voids are

    repaired in crossbands.

Jay-Classic IV - This is the Best of all possible cores. Originallyengineered for a large OEM, this core has a thinner MDF crossband thanClassic Core II, thus an overall increased volume of veneer inner plies. Italso weighs less than other Classic Core options. When you examine theprofile of this panel it is very difficult to see the composite line. The corecomes with a 2-step sanded blank which offers tighter thicknesstolerances than standard veneer cores. Jay-Classic IV is the best coreoffered in terms of strength, stability, surface quality and thicknesstolerance.

Types of Veneer CutsThe manner in which a log segment is cut with relation to the annual ringswill determine the appearance of the veneer. The principal methods ofslicing veneers are Rotary, Plain Slicing (or Flat Slicing), Quarter Slicing(or Quarter Cut), and Rift Slicing (or Rift Cut).

    Rotary

The log is centeredmounted on a lathe andpeeled along the generalpath of the growth rings likeunwinding a roll of paper, providing a generally boldrandom appearance. Rotarycut veneers may vary inwidth and matching atveneer joints is extremelydifficult. The only way in

which a whole piece faceveneer can be cut.

    Plain Sliced

This slicing method is most oftenused to product veneers for highquality architecturalwoodworking. Slicing is doneparallel to a line through thecenter of the log. A combinationof cathedral and straight grainpatterns results, with a naturalprogression of pattern.

    7/28

Matching Between Adjacent Veneer SegmentsIt is possible to achieve certain visual effects by the manner in whichveneer pieces are arranged. Rotary Cut veneers are usually whole pieceface, but if spliced, they are difficult to match. As a result, most matching isdone with sliced veneers. The most common types of matching are Book,Slip, and Random.

    Book Matching

The most commonly used match in the industry. Every other piece ofveneer is turned over so adjacent pieces are opened like the pages of abook.

    Slip Matching

Often used with quarter slicing and rift sliced veneers. Adjoining pieces

are placed (slipped out) in sequence without turning, resulting in all thesame face sides being exposed.

    Random Matching

Veneer pieces are placed next to each other in a random order andorientation, producing a board-by-board effect in many species.

    Rift Slicing

Rift veneers are produced mostoften in Red and White Oak, rarelyin other species. Note that riftveneers and rift sawn solid lumberare produced so differently that amatch between the two is highlyunlikely. In both cases the cuttingis done slightly off the radius linesminimizing the flake associatedwith quarter slicing.

    Quarter Slicing

Quarter slicing simulates the quartersawing process of solid lumber, roughly parallel to a radius line throughthe log segment. In many species theindividual veneer segments are narrowas a result. A series of stripes isproduced, varying in density andthickness from species to species.Flake is a characteristic of thismethod in Red and White Oak.

Veneer Selection Select Veneer is composed entirely of heartwood or sapwood and ismatched for grain, pattern and color.

Uniform Veneer is also composed entirely of heartwood or sapwood, but is matched for color only.

Natural Veneer is composed of both heartwood and sapwood and isgenerally less expensive than select or uniform veneers

Paint Grade Veneer has a smooth enough finish so none of the wood

grain characteristics show through the paint. Stain Grade Veneer is meant to take a clear or tinted stain and still showthe natural characteristics of the wood.

Shop GradeShop Grade plywood is available in every species on an accumulatedbasis. When the mill has produced enough shop in a specific specieswere able to offer the product at a discount.Shop Grade plywood is the result of a manufacturing defect; press faults, veneer overlap, core gaps/laps, splice lines, sand thru, etc. Each sheetshould allow 85% yield however.Shop is produced in one of two ways; Falldown or Manufactured. Falldown

panels have been downgraded during the manufacturing process whileManufactured Shop is produced to be Shop from designated veneers.

Face Grade ApplicationsAA - The best quality face grade for high end use such as architecturalpaneling, doors, and cabinets, case goods and quality furniture.

A - Where AA is not required but excellent appearance is very importantas in cabinets and furniture.

B - Where the natural characteristics and appearance of the species are

desirable.C and D - Provide sound surfaces but allow unlimited color variation.Should be used in applications where the surface will be hidden or a morenatural appearance is desired.

Baltic Birch is a multi-ply panel product made in Russia. It is available in a vast array of thicknesses and grades. Typically white in color, the multi-ply cross-bands have excellent screw-holding properties and provide a decorative edge when left uncovered.

Available in thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 25mm and panel sizes of 5x5 or 4x8, its most commonly used in furniture, casegoods, and cabinetry.

Baltic Birch is imported on GOST standards. We offer the following grades from stock:

Grade B-Select one-piece face veneer is generally light and even in color. Some small, closed, pin knots may be allowed, as well as some brownstreaks. NO patches or voids are allowed. The surface is well sanded.

Grade BB-One-piece face veneer is generally light and uniform in color. Occasional pin knots and mineral streaking is allowed. ALL open knots anddefects other than those allowed in grade B have been cut out and replaced with oval patches. The patch veneer is the same grade and specie, and istypically of the same color. The surface is sanded.

Grade C-This grade allows patches, open knots, and veneer splits. Grade C is not normally sanded.
