Hello Wood Glen property owners. Spring is finally here (by the calendar, at least)! If your yard is lush and green and already needs to be mowed once a week I have some bad news for you – those are weeds. Please treat them or pull them up. Once your yard is weed free regular mowing, watering and fertilizing will keep it that way.

I had the pleasure of attending the Wood Glen Wine Tasting the evening of March 7th. I confess it’s the first one I’ve ever been to and Lela and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the opportunity to meet fellow residents and sample Texas wines. Anna Warren, our social committee chairperson, has done an awesome job of recruiting an energetic and upbeat team of who work hard and seem to really enjoy what they do for our neighborhood. Thank you all and thanks especially to the Hahn’s for hosting the event.

While at the Wine Tasting Lela got a text from a neighbor that kids were in the tennis court. This was close to 10:00pm. Another neighbor and I went to check it out and discovered eighteen kids, ranging in age from 10 to 17, rowdy-ing in the court throwing a volleyball at each other. Our neighbor had reported seeing kids standing on the net and I noticed that one pole was now bent and the net sagging nearly to the ground. In the amenity center parking lot there were teens paired up in the shadows.

My companion asked them all to leave and they were polite and cooperative but something needs to be done to prevent this. These amenities are for the enjoyment of the owners and their guests. Unsupervised kids such as these deliberately or inadvertently cause damage. In 2014 the

total cost of this damage was $3,000. That’s the equivalent 7.6 homeowner’s annual dues wasted! We’ve had sinks shattered, furniture broken, bars bent, locks destroyed, poles removed from the fences around the tennis court and picnic tables busted.

How do we stop this? As a starter, if you have kids, please instruct them not to hang out at the amenity center after dark. We allow temporary basketball goals now specifically to give kids something constructive to do. In the past we’ve paid a security person to check on the amenity center at night and we may need to do so again. This is money that could be better spent improving the neighborhood but our first priority must be maintaining what we already have.

You may have noticed that I’ve made it a point of mentioning in each president’s letter our obligation as homeowners to use our garages for parking motor vehicles. I’ve always complied with this requirement but one of my cars was a little 1998 Kia Sportage. I’ve recently replaced it and now have experienced the “my garage has shrunk” syndrome. It will be a challenge but I’m determined to meet it. One weekend soon Lela and I will have to re-arrange the placement of the shelves, garden equipment and workbench. Remember my challenge to you: if you have a three car garage you should AT LEAST park two cars in it. If you have a two car garage you should AT LEAST park one. If you utilize all the spaces as required by our CC&R’s I am grateful to you.

SPRING 2015ANNOUNCEMENT

It's that time of year again to join in the Wood Glen Community Wide Fire Ant Baiting.

Joining in the community wide fire ant baiting effort can help reduce the number of fire ants within the neighborhood as well as increase the number of native ants. By joining together, re-invasion boundaries can be pushed further out causing a longer period of time to elapse before fire ants move back into the area. Studies show that community management can reduce the number of fire ants within the community, reduce the amount of money spent on fire ant management and reduce the amount of chemical placed into the environment.

Baiting of front yards will take place the week of April 13, 2015. Please turn off sprinkler systems and park vehicles in the driveway during this week. To get bait for your backyard, bring your hand held spreader to the amenity area on Saturday, April 18, 2015 between 9:30AM- 12PM. The rainout date for picking up backyard bait will be Saturday, April 25, 2015 from

9:30AM- 12PM.Tips for baiting: • Make sure bait is fresh.• Fresh bait should have a nutty or corn-like scent.• Rancid bait smells sour.

• Apply bait when ants are foraging.• On hot days, fire ants forage for food in the mornings or

evenings when temperatures are cooler.• If you’re unsure if fire ants are foraging, place bait beside

a mound and check back after 15 minutes to see the bait is being picked up.

• Broadcasting baits can save time by not having to locate each mound in your yard.

• Broadcasting will also help get smaller mounds that may not be visible.

• The bait used in the neighborhood program is applied at a low (Continued on Page 5)

FORMOSAN TERMITES

There are three main types of termites that can cause problems for homeowners in Central Texas- native subterranean termites, formosan subterranean termites and drywood termites. This article will focus of formosan termites.

Formosan termites are a more voracious type of subterranean termite. These termites have been spread throughout Texas through transport of infested material or soil. Formosan termites build carton nests that allow them to survive above ground without contact with the soil. Nests are often located in hollow spaces, such as wall voids.

Formosan subterranean termite workers and soldiers.Formosan termites feed on a wider variety of cellulose than other

subterranean termites, including live plants, consuming both spring and summer growth wood whereas native subterranean termites feed only on spring growth. Formosan termites have also been known to chew through non-cellulose materials such as soft metals, plaster or plastic.

The type of termite is determined by using soldiers (the group that defends the colony) or alates (winged reproductives) for identification. Formosan termite soldiers have a hardened head capsule that is tear-drop shaped. The alates have two heavy veins on the leading edge of the front wing along with hairs on the wings. If you suspect termites, you can submit sample insects to me for identification. Treatment would need to be carried out by a profession pest management company.

Exterior – Mildew is a black stain that appears on the exterior of your home, particularly those with limestone veneer. This is a valid maintenance item that needs to be addressed. It can be removed via muriatic acid available from any chain hardware store. At some point the drive-through will start picking this up again. We will alert you before this begins.

Gardens and beds –Spring is on the way and it’s a great time to mulch your beds and trim your bushes. Mulch not only enhances the appearance of your property it also retains moisture and reduces watering needs. If you have overgrown bushes, consider replacing them.

Garages – Spring is also a good time to clear out and organize your garages. Yes, it really can be done! If you are not parking the number of vehicles your garage was designed to hold, set a goal to increase the number you park in there by 1.
