    Project name: Cardboard Chair

Notes: This chair was completed out of nothing more than cardboard and hot glue. The use ofeither double-wall or single-wall cardboard can sturdily seat a person over 300 pounds, granted,double-wall is preferred.

The strength of the chair is derived from the ridges in the cardboard runningvertically. If the ridges run horizontally, the chair will collapse under pressure.

Materials: standard box cutter, extra razor blades, 4X4 or 4X8 sheets ofunfolded cardboard (order online, or find a paper/ cardboard manufacturer), and adhesive (Iused hot glue).

Notes: Create a circle with a 36 diameter. To draw large circles, use a piece of scrap woodover 18 long with a nail in one end and a drilled hole for a pencil to poke through on the otherend (18 away from the nail.) Place the nail in the center of the 36 circle, and rotate the pencilend around the center point.

For the angle of the seat and backrest, you can use the exact measurements onthese plans, or eye-ball it to decide what looks comfortable to you. The angles and arches ofthe seat and backrest can change at will.

The lower the seat dips down in the back, the more comfortable the chair will be(to a point). The more reclining the back is, the more comfortable it will be (to a point). Not onlyis the arched seat and backrest design aesthetically appealing, it is also more comfortable.

Once you have the shape you want, duplicate it seven more times. The twooutside pieces are solid, and the five internal pieces have slits in them for cross sheets ofcardboard.

*Important! Be sure that the lines in the cardboard are running vertically. If theyare horizontal or at an angle, the chair will lose its structural integrity.

Notes: The five center pieces are the exact same as the outside pieces, except for the cuts. The reason for the cuts being approximately .25 wide is to account for the thickness of thecardboard. The heights of each cut is very important, but the distance between them canchange as long as the middle sheets are exactly the same.

It is best to re-measure the distance from the top surface of the chair, to theground so the slits can be exactly half that length. Chances are, your shape is not the exactsame shape as the one displayed here. As long as you correctly find the midpoint of eachmeasurement, the chair will work out.

Many of the measurements in these plans are unusual decimal numbers. Try toget as close as you can, but perfection is not necessary.

*Dont forget to have the lines in the board running vertically on every centerpiece.

Notes: There are seven of these support sheets, each a different size. Perfect measurementson these supports are vital. Be sure to have the cuts facing upwards, with the 21.25 side on theground.

*Dont forget to position the lines in the board vertically on every piece!

Notes: The seat and back of the chair is one single piece of cardboard. Cut a sheet 21.75wide, and mark where it should be cut. You will probably have to alter the length measurementof 40.046. It is best to cut too long, and shorten it up later.

*The lines in the cardboard should be running horizontally from side to side.Once you decide where to fold the sheet, score the line, cutting halfway through the board tohelp it fold.

*To curve the cardboard, run it along asharp, straight edge (like a table) with the

lines running parallel to the edge. Bendthe cardboard at every other ridge (aboutevery .5 or .75) to ensure a clean andeven curve.

Uneven gaps in bends looks messy!

Notes: These are estimates on where to put the arm rests. You can place the armrestswherever you want, depending on how tall you are. With the armrests placed forward of thecenter of the circle arc, it creates a more comfortable chair, and a better design.

To position the arm rests, have someone sit in the chair and move them to thedesired position. Once found, draw a guideline around the outside of the armrest on the side ofthe chair. The arm rests are placed on with a layer of wood glue (for extra strength) and asmuch hot glue as you can apply without drying. Stick the arm rests to the chair before the hotglue dries, and within the guidelines. Then put a layer of glue around the edges of the armrests, sealing them to the chair (be neat and tidy with the glue!).

Wait for the glue to dry and enjoy your chair!
