Heating with wood = utilisation of localenergy reserves
The use of wood reduces our dependence on
heating oil and natural gas, safeguards local
jobs in the surrounding region and offers an
additional source of income for land and
forest managers.
Heating with wood is a cost-controlling
alternative, as the cost of heating with wood
chip/shaving systems is largely independent
of the price of fossil fuels.
Compared to oil-burning heating systems, the
amount of sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbon
emissions are lower.
There are no risks associated with
transporting and storing wood.
The ecological result is a virtually closed Co2
cycle.

Closed Co2 cycle
The burning of wood releases the same amount of Co2 back
into the environment as was previously absorbed and bound
in the wood through photosynthesis during the life of the
tree.
The burning of fossil fuels, such as heating oil and natural
gas, has a much greater impact. When these fuels are
burned, Co2 which has been absorbed and stored over the
course of millions of years is released back into the
atmosphere again. This type of Co2, which originates from
past geological eras, is linked to the intensification of the
greenhouse effect and leads to uncontrollable changes in
our climate.
HDG wood boilers are manufactured in Bavaria
(Germany), which is characterised by hills,
forests and meadows.

The automatic ash removal system – a clean concept
The removal of ashes from the
combustion chamber facilitates low-
maintenance operation of the firing
system, even for high-ash fuels.
Combustion residues are deposited into
the ash pan by means of the moving
stepped grate. From there, they are
conveyed with an ash worm conveyor
into a separate ash container which has
a capacity of 60 litres.
The automatic removal of ash from the
fly chamber (60 litre capacity), which is
a standard feature, significantly
extends cleaning intervals in the area
of the upright, self-cleaning heat
exchanger surfaces.
For wood chips, pellets and shavings (moisture content up to 65%)
Consistent output due to state-of-the-art combustion technology which employs an air-cooled, moving stepped grate (patented)
Infinitely adjustable, nominal thermal output
Unique combustion control by means of oxygen sensor and hot gas sensor for optimal efficiency (> 90%)

Stepped grate technology
The moving stepped grate – your guarantee for consistent performance
The use of a moving, air-cooled stepped grate in the firing chamber for this
output range is truly unique. Air for combustion (primary air) is fed in
underneath the fuel grate. Routing air in this way effectively cools the
grate elements and preheats combustion air at the same time, which has a
positive effect on combustion.
Stepped grate technology ensures that optimum performance is maintained
even when the proportion of non-combustible material is increased. The
material moves through different temperature zones on the grate. The fuel
is thereby dried, degassed and finally burned in its entirety. The geometric
design of the hot combustion chamber facilitates an above average
retention time and turbulation of the combustion gases at high
temperatures.
The control system for combustion and output enables the system to adapt
to different types of fuel. Primary air, secondary air and material quantity
are automatically optimised. This makes it possible to regulate the system’s
nominal thermal output between 30% and 100%.
Sectional view of stepped grate system
HDG is the first manufacturer to successfully employ the most proven feed grate
technology used in commercial firing systems in residential boiler systems at an
affordable price.
The stepped grate concept ensures absolute low-emission combustion with a
high degree of efficiency.

awards. This recognition also serves as
an incentive for HDG to conduct further
intensive research and development
with regard to innovative and practical
wood heating systems.
HDG products are regularly tested in
independent laboratories to ensure
they meet both statutory and
voluntary quality requirements. They
conform to the guidelines for
combustion technology and safety
engineering.

HDG control technology –
an innovative advancement
For wood chip boilers, system control and output regulation are just
as important as combustion technology. For this reason, HDG
employs cutting edge technology which is both reliable and easy to
operate.
The user-friendly control panel on the PLC controller displays the
current operating status and makes it possible to call up all necessary
operating parameters at any time.
The combustion control system determines the required amount of
secondary air via the oxygen sensor and optimises the combustion
parameters accordingly (for HDG Compact 100/150/200). Data from
the hot gas temperature sensor is used to meter-out the optimal
amount of fuel.
The integrated output controller uses sensors in the supply and return
flows to enable infinite adjustment of output between 30% and
100%. The fuel type can be input to provide even more intensive and
direct control over combustion.
All components of the system are electronically controlled by a PLC
controller inside the control cabinet. Current operating data from the
combustion system is indicated on an illuminated display.
The design is compliant with the requirements of DIN EN 60335 and
DIN EN 50156. The control cabinet can be expanded to accommodate
different system requirements.
Our unique combustion and output control system guarantees the
lowest possible emission levels and the highest degree of efficiency,
which has been confirmed by TÜV of southern Germany.

Software and hardware upgrades for the control
cabinet are available on request.

In conjunction with a water extinguisher unit, feeding via our patented
rotary feeder with stoker worm guarantees you the utmost in operating
safety (IBS tested).
The combustion chamber is hermetically decoupled from the silo and
transport unit by means of the rotary feeder (patented back-burning
protection).
Another inherent advantage is the capability to reduce the size of larger
pieces of wood, thus creating the ideal conditions for combustion. This
is beneficial for a continuous combustion process.
An automatic reversing mechanism ensures as far as possible continuous
operation in the unlikely event of jamming.

Based on the layout of the building, size of the bunker, boiler capacity and fuel type, we offer custom-tailored delivery
systems, from spring steel blade and hinged arm delivery to silo and walking floor delivery. On request, we will be
happy to send you more specific information about our silo and walking floor delivery systems.
HDG delivery systems are designed to be robust and durable, and they offer a hassle-free means of reliably supplying
your system with fuel.
The spring steel blade feeding system transports and meters fuel, from wood shavings to G 50-size wood chips.
The special arrangement of the worm shaft spiral ensures the uniform delivery of fuel.
The delivery worm can be manually reversed if needed (with agitator disengaged).
The specially developed torque support on the drivemotor protects the gearbox from being overloaded and ensures an
exceptable noise level.
A heavy duty version is available for the delivery of pressed briquettes and pure hardwood chips.

For low-emission combustion, it is important to only use
“good” wood, i.e. not waste wood or dirty, decayed, rotten or
very wet wood. Also, the proportion of bark should not be too
high, as this causes an increased proportion of ash. Untreated
wood generally produces a relatively minimal amount of ash.
