Chair’s report In my seventh year as Chair of the Children’s Hospital Foundation I have again been humbled by the generosity of Queenslanders. With the support of 450 dedicated volunteers and donations of a record $24 million, the Children’s Hospital Foundation has set new records in the assistance we have provided to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital directly, through investments in research and equipment and, pleasingly, into support for paediatric services across the State.

The Board has also set a new five year strategy for the Children’s Hospital Foundation for financial years 2019 through to 2023. The Children’s Hospital Foundation has prioritised several areas of focus, including:

• providing support for the continued building of capacity and capability in our paediatric research community

• understanding the impact of our patient and family services

• extending suitable patient and family services to paediatric wards and services State-wide, as well as collaborating with those hospital services and their local foundations to develop and support new services to improve outcomes for our sickest children, wherever they live

• building our fundraising capability, focusing particularly on developing our digital fundraising, and

• supporting the world-class clinical care provided by the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital through ensuring we make the most effective use of donors’ funds, increasing our impact through faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses.

Our 450 volunteers give their time generously to support a wide range of activities in the hospital. This year saw us recognise the incredible commitment of Woolworths, their staff and their customers with the Woolworths Way Finders. These volunteers are highly valued as the first contact that families and patients may have in the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, helping nearly 45,000 patients and their families to find their way, ensuring that a potentially scary and daunting experience is made easier and brighter.

Our Telethon and The Coffee Club Telethon Ball are the highlights of our annual fundraising calendar. The ongoing support of the Lazarou, Kokoris and Drivas families made The Coffee Club Telethon Ball a night to remember for 1,000 guests. Their support, and that of the Channel Nine Telethon supporting partners, Woolworths, Golden Casket and Bank of Queensland, raised an incredible $12.23 million, with the lead gift of $1 million from the Queensland State Government, in support of our sickest children.

This year was the first full year of our Children’s Health Research Alliance between Children’s Health Queensland and the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Alliance’s purpose is to encourage and support the undertaking of world class paediatric research in Queensland, and especially research that supports the delivery of paediatric services across the State by Children’s Health Queensland. The Alliance conducted a significant consultation process across the paediatric research community that determined an initial focus on child and adolescent brain cancer research.

Research offers the only hope of a cure for many childhood illnesses, which is why this year, the Children’s Health Research Alliance made a commitment to improving the outcomes of children living with cancers with the lowest survival rates. A focus on brain cancer was determined as a key area of research and the Children’s Hospital Foundation has committed more than $5 million over the next five years to establish the Centre for Child and Adolescent Brain Cancer Research. A grant process that is designed to encourage significant international, national and local research collaboration, led by Children’s Health Queensland clinician researchers, was launched in April 2018. The Children’s Hospital Foundation was also invited by the Federal Minster for Health, the Honourable Greg Hunt, to take part in the Australian Brain Cancer Mission Roundtable in September 2017 creating alignment for priority areas for research as well as potential funding collaborations nationally.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation also said farewell to two of our long-serving Board members, Helen Darch and Susan McKee. Both Helen and Susan have made significant contributions in their time on the Board. Helen was our Deputy Chair and the interim Chair of the Children’s Health Research Alliance, where she led the strong consultation process that has led to the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s significant investment into brain cancer research. Susan’s operational experience was invaluable on the Board, particularly in guiding the ongoing development of our crucial patient and family services.

I would also like to thank the Foundation team, including Damon Mudge who left us after four years of significant contribution as our Chief Operating Officer and for serving as our acting Chief Executive Officer from November 2016 to June 2017.

Chief Executive Officer’s reportThe Children’s Hospital Foundation is making a real difference in the lives of our sickest kids and their families while they’re in hospital.

When a family is touched by serious childhood illness or injury, it’s the small things that can make a big difference to their hospital experience. Our hundreds of amazing volunteers help make the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital a special place every day of the year, helping kids laugh and smile and making life easier for their parents.

This also allows the hospital’s clinical teams to focus more effectively on their patients and their families. Our volunteers welcome families to the hospital and help them find their way around, they help parents scrub and gown up so they can see their kids in theatre before surgery. Our volunteers cuddle little babies so parents can have a little time to themselves and they play games and read with the kids to distract and entertain them, helping both their recovery and making their hospital stay more enjoyable.

In 2017-2018 the Children’s Hospital Foundation invested $4.53 million into research (excluding equipment). Researchers funded by the Children’s Hospital Foundation continued to have an impact through life-saving childhood cancer treatments, helping children with respiratory diseases breathe easier, making sure children with life-threatening illnesses have the best chance of survival and assisting children with disabilities to lead more fulfilling lives.

Thanks to the continued support from Woolworths, our valued partner for 32 years, we have jointly established the Woolworths’ Centre for Childhood Nutrition Research this year. Woolworths’ commitment to children’s health outcomes has enabled the Foundation to invest $5 million over five years into this new virtual Centre, which acts as a hub for innovative paediatric nutrition and public health research, with the ultimate goal of improving the health outcomes of Queensland kids.

As part of our commitment to supporting paediatric research and ensuring that our promising female researchers are able to continue their careers post career breaks we, in honour of Mary McConnel who established the first children’s hospital in Queensland, proudly launched the inaugural Mary McConnel Career Boost Program on International Women’s Day in March 2018. Under this new program we have been able to offer grants and mentoring by other leading female researchers to nine of Queensland’s most talented and pioneering female researchers in their field.

2017-2018 has also been a record year for our investment in state-of-the-art medical equipment at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and into paediatric wards and services across the State. This total funding of $3.35 million has

touched the lives of thousands of sick and injured children and their families, with a record $1.7 million going to paediatric wards throughout Queensland, ensuring that sick and injured children, regardless of where they live, receive the highest level of care.

Support services and entertainment programs like Juiced TV - the TV program made for the kids in hospital, by the kids in hospital - are vital to enhancing the healing environment to help kids get better and go home sooner. This year we took an important first step towards expanding the service into regional hospitals across Queensland so more sick children and their siblings can experience the magic of Juiced TV.

All of this incredible work is only made possible through the generous support of caring people and our corporate and community partners, who donated and helped us achieve a record total revenue of $27 million 2017-2018.

In addition to the tremendous support of Woolworths, I would like to make a special mention of our other major partners Golden Casket, Channel Nine, The Coffee Club and Bank of Queensland. Also, our fourth Channel Nine Telethon for the Children’s Hospital Foundation went to air in November 2017. It showcased our world-class hospital, the special children and their families and the doctors, nurses, therapists and researchers who are providing exceptional treatment and care.

I would like to thank our wonderful volunteers as well as our terrific team members at the Children’s Hospital Foundation who have delivered our tremendous results, developed our new five year strategy and refreshed our brand as just a few of the significant activities undertaken this year.

OverviewChildren’s Hospital FoundationAs the official charity of Children’s Health Queensland, the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and the Centre for Children’s Health Research, the Children’s Hospital Foundation supports children and their families throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales.

We help kids today by supporting world-class clinical care, purchasing additional specialised medical equipment and supporting a range of state-wide programs for sick kids wherever they live. We distract and entertain kids while they’re in hospital and we support their families every step of the way. Our amazing volunteers are in our hospital and community health centres every day, helping kids to laugh and smile, get better and go home to their families sooner.

We help kids tomorrow by funding research to achieve faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses and injuries.

Children’s Health Queensland

Children’s Health Queensland Health and Hospital Service is a specialist state-wide hospital and health service dedicated to caring for children and young people from across Queensland and northern New South Wales. A recognised leader in paediatric healthcare, education and research, Children’s Health Queensland delivers a full range of clinical services, tertiary and quaternary care, through the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. To ensure that children and their families receive the best possible care, regardless of where they live, Children’s Health Queensland supports Queensland’s 15 other hospital and health services and provides more than 50 state-wide paediatric outreach and telehealth services.

Lady Cilento Children’s HospitalThe Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane is Queensland’s children’s hospital – the major specialist paediatric hospital for Queensland and northern New South Wales families and a centre for teaching and research. As the largest and most advanced paediatric facility in Australia, the hospital is responsible for providing tertiary-level care for the state’s sickest and most seriously injured children and general paediatric health services to children and young people in the greater Brisbane metropolitan area. In 2017-2018, the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital admitted 40,423 children and young people as inpatients, provided 229,436 specialist outpatient appointments and attended to 72,094 emergency presentations.

Centre for Children’s Health ResearchThe $134 million Centre for Children’s Health Research which opened in November 2015, is Queensland’s first fully-integrated research facility focused on child and adolescent health research.

The Centre for Children’s Health Research is a partnership between Queensland Health (through Children’s Health Queensland), the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland.

It is an integrated hub of specialist knowledge dedicated to improving the health of children, and facilitating best opportunities for collaborative research projects. The Translational Research Institute is also co-located at the Centre for Children’s Health Research.

The nine-level centre houses wet and dry laboratories, pathology services, a gait laboratory, a nutrition laboratory and the Queensland Children’s Tumour Bank, funded by the Children’s Hospital Foundation, which provides a tissue repository for national and international cancer research.

The Centre also houses the Queensland Children’s Motion Analysis Service and the Children’s Nutrition Research Centre.

Alignment with the Queensland Government’s objectives for the communityTwo of the Queensland Government’s objectives for the community – keep Queenslanders healthy and give all our children a great start – are advanced by the strategic partnership between the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland. The Children’s Hospital Foundation funds world-class medical and clinical excellence research, provides comfort, support, care and entertainment for sick children and their families and invests in vital medical equipment to improve children’s health.

Year in reviewOur strategic objectivesThe Children’s Hospital Foundation’s strategic plan includes a number of strategic objectives. The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s focus in 2017-2018 was to fund research and programs that will have the greatest impact on children’s health, to support patients and families in hospital and to drive future growth to make sure we can support our sickest kids in the future.

Our objectives:

• Improve children’s health across Queensland by funding research, vital medical equipment and improvements to clinical care that lead to faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses and injuries.

• Support patients and their families when they are in hospital by providing a range of programs and activities that complement and enhance clinical care, and provide distraction and entertainment for children and their families.

• Engage with our partners and the community to renew and grow our donor base to increase our net fundraising income.

• Be the best-known and most loved children’s charity in Queensland.

• Strive to have great people, good financial management, good systems and sound governance to underpin our work and deliver on our core objectives.

Our performance indicatorsThe Children’s Hospital Foundation’s strategic plan includes a number of key performance indicators to measure our impact. In 2017-2018 we grew our net revenue and our supporter base allowing us to continue to fund research to achieve faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for some of the most devastating childhood illnesses and injuries. More details on our key achievements against our key performance indicators in 2017-2018 are included below.

Key achievements in 2017-2018• We achieved a record total revenue for the year of

$27 million, which included $24 million of generous donations from the community, support through our corporate partners and events, and from those people who generously left a gift in their Will

• Our investment into patient and family services and research and grants has grown substantially over the past years, increasing 38 percent in 2017-2018.

• The Children’s Hospital Foundation contributed record funding of $11.9 million into our mission, providing $7.9 million in research and equipment funding and $1.5 million into our patient and family services in the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Queensland facilities.

• We funded the purchase of $1.7 million worth of equipment and services for paediatric wards throughout regional Queensland.

• We also provided funding to the Queensland Children’s Tumour Bank and ongoing research into childhood cancer, burns, infectious diseases, respiratory illnesses, childhood nutrition, telehealth and cerebral palsy.

• We funded new research into improving cardiac treatment, diagnosis and management of anxiety and depression, and the treatment of respiratory conditions including cystic fibrosis, asthma, and chronic wet cough.

• We funded $350,000 for research into improvements in health service delivery.

• We funded music therapy, burns camp, the social welfare fund and the remembrance ceremony.

• We were supported by 450 volunteers who committed 35,200 hours of support and provided over 85,100 positive interactions with patients and their families, including:

• 45,869 families assisted through information desks and way finding.

• 14,489 fun interactions through Bedside Play and Pet Therapy programs.

• 3,794 kids borrowed over 11,500 books through the Book Bunker.

• 113 kids joined the Bravery Beads program.

• 12,023 families were supported through operating theatre.

• 504 family interactions through Community Child Health Centres.

• 2,520 patients supported in Burns Clinic, Emergency Department and Oncology Day Unit.

• 2,690 cuddles provided to babies through our Steggles Cuddle Care program.

• We completed season three of Juiced TV, where kids create, host and star in their very own weekly TV show. Along the way kids have had some

amazing experiences and built their confidence and skills, with over 837 kids involved in 3,622 hours of filming 52 episodes.

• We increased our community awareness with an increase in media stories and significant growth in our social media engagement.

Operating environment The Children’s Hospital Foundation was established in 2011 by the Hospitals Foundations Regulation 2005, made under section 7 of the Hospitals Foundations Act 1982, as the Children’s Health Foundation Queensland. Its name was formally amended to Children’s Hospital Foundation Queensland by the Hospitals Foundations Regulation 2015. The Children’s Hospital Foundation works to deliver on its mission across Queensland and its purpose is to be the charity for Children’s Health Queensland, the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, and the Centre for Children’s Health Research.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s governing legislation was replaced, and the Hospital Foundations Act 2018 commenced operation on 1 July 2018.

Corporate governanceOur BoardThe role of our Board includes:

• Maintaining high levels of accountability to our supporters, stakeholders and regulators.

• Protecting the integrity of the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

• Developing strategies and directions for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

• Monitoring the performance of the Chief Executive Officer.

• Approving the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s annual budget.

• Monitoring the performance of the Children’s Hospital Foundation against strategic and financial goals.

• Reviewing, ratifying and monitoring systems of risk management and internal control, audit and legal compliance.

• Contributing to fundraising opportunities for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Board members elect to serve in an honorary capacity and therefore receive no fees for their services on the Board or committees and are not paid out-of-pocket expenses.

The following persons have been approved as current members of the Board by the Governor-in-Council, acting by and with the advice of the Executive Council, and under the provisions of the Hospitals Foundations Act 1982:

Board member biographiesBruce Cowley BCom LLB (Hons) FAICD

Children’s Hospital Foundation Chair Bruce Cowley is a legal practitioner, adviser, author, speaker and director. Bruce is national Chair of one of Australia’s largest law firms, MinterEllison, and a senior corporate lawyer with over 37 years’ experience. Bruce has advised many public and private companies and government corporations. His interest in director’s duties and crisis management is widely known and he is a popular speaker and respected author on corporate governance in Australia.

Bruce is Chair of the Cerebral Palsy League and a member of Griffith University’s Business School Advisory Board, a member of the Takeovers Panel, and sits on the Board of the Merchant Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, is Deputy Chair of the AICD’s Law Committee, a member of the Not for Profit Chairs Advisory Board, and a past member of the Queensland State Council of the AICD. He is also Chair of the IDEAS (Indigenous Diabetes Eyes and Screening) Van Project Board.

Bruce was former Chair of the Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute, was formerly a non-executive Director of Talon Petroleum Limited and was Deputy Chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Bruce joined the Board as Chair in November 2011. He is an ex-officio member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee and the Grants Committee, and chairs the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. He attended seven Board meetings and five committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Rosemary Vilgan BBus, Dip Super Mgt, FAICD, FASFA, DUniv (QUT) (Hon)

Rosemary Vilgan was the Chief Executive Officer of QSuper from 1998 until late 2015. Ms Vilgan was named as the 2013 Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year in recognition of her career especially in leading growth and innovation which saw the QSuper group become one of the world’s largest and leading superannuation funds as well as a major Australian financial planner and insurer. Rosemary was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Queensland University of Technology for her services to the University where she was a Member of the Governing Council for 12 years.

Rosemary is currently Chair of the Commonwealth Bank Group Staff Superannuation Fund, Chair of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission, a member of the QUT Investment and Borrowings Committee, member of the Queensland Council of the Australian

Institute of Company Directors (and a Fellow), a member of Chief Executive Women and a Fellow of the association of Superannuation Funds of Australia.

Rosemary joined the Board in April 2017 and was appointed as Deputy Chair on 2 March 2018. She is a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee and the Remuneration and Nominations Committee. She attended seven Board meetings and three committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Fionnagh Dougan BA Com (Hons), Grad Dip Man (Health)

Fionnagh Dougan is a healthcare innovator with a long and successful record of leading change in complex environments in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Fionnagh’s nursing background fostered a lifelong commitment to improving children’s health and wellbeing, with a focus on patient and family-centered care. A passionate advocate of workplace culture as a driver of healthcare improvement and innovation, Fionnagh has implemented excellence frameworks as General Manager of Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital and Child Health Services and in her current role as Chief Executive of Children’s Health Queensland, where she continues to lead the digital transformation of the statewide service.

A champion for women in leadership, Fionnagh is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland, a Graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and also serves as President of Children’s Healthcare Australasia.

Fionnagh is also a member of the Children’s Health Research Alliance board, a joint initiative of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland.

Kenneth (Mac) Drysdale BBus (Acc)

Mac Drysdale is a highly-respected executive with a strong history as a Board director and chair.

Mac has held numerous director and chair roles throughout his career including Seymour Whyte, Country Road Australia, Country Road USA, Australian Wool Corporation, International Wool Secretariat, Australian Wool Research and Promotion Organisation, Wool International and Mitre 10. As chair of a number of wool production and research organisations, Mac has been ultimately responsible for research investments of up to $120 million per year.

Mac has also been Chair of Yalari, a not-for-profit organisation that offers secondary education scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from regional, rural and remote communities. He has a long family history of grazing in Western Queensland, and continues to operate an organic grazing property in the Augathella region.

Since 2 March 2018, Mac is also a member of the Children’s Health Research Alliance board, a joint initiative of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland.

Mac joined the Board in February 2016 and is a member of the Grants Committee. He attended five Board meetings and three committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Professor Stephen Gray BCom (Hons), LLB (Hons), PhD

Stephen Gray is Professor of Finance at the University of Queensland and a Director of consulting firm Frontier Economics. In his university role, Stephen teaches a range of courses in financial management, asset valuation, and corporate finance. He has received a national teaching award and a number of manuscript awards for his research.

Stephen is also an industry consultant on issues relating to valuation, cost of capital, and corporate financial strategy. Many of Australia’s leading companies, government-owned corporations and regulatory bodies have benefited from his consultancy skills on projects such as corporate cost of capital reviews, asset valuation, independent valuation of executive stock options, and the development of corporate financial strategies. He has served as an independent expert for a number of courts and tribunals.

Professor Gray joined the Board in November 2011. He chairs the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee and is a member of the Grants Committee and Remuneration and Nominations Committee. He attended seven Board meetings and ten committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Luke McGrath CFP AITA GAICD

In his 30-plus years as an investment and financial services professional, Luke McGrath has held senior positions with some of Australia’s largest investment banks and financial services organisations. Throughout his financial services career he has consulted to numerous companies and individuals across the breadth of the industry.

He has also consulted to a number of significant philanthropic organisations in Australia and elsewhere on structure, strategic direction and grant making strategies.

Luke is the Managing Director of an investment and philanthropic consultancy organisation as well as a director of a number of private companies.

He is also a member of the Children’s Health Research Alliance board, a joint initiative of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland.

Luke joined the Board in November 2011. He chairs the Grants Committee and is a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee. Luke attended seven Board meetings and 11 committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Scott Taylor LLB, MAICD, RITP

Scott Taylor is a legal practitioner and founder and partner of Taylor David Lawyers. Scott has advised on some of Australia’s most complex and high profile reconstruction and insolvency matters. He is also an accomplished author of the Australian chapter of the annual International Insolvency Review and is a regular speaker and presenter at various forums around the world. He also sits on the London-based expert review panel for The Law Reviews.

Scott joined the Board in February 2016 and is a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee. He has attended five Board meetings and four committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Ross Willims BCom (Hons)

Ross Willims has held a number of senior executive positions in both the public and private sectors including Vice President External Affairs at BHP Billiton Metallurgical Coal and Director-General of the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy. He has also worked in a range of Commonwealth Government departments. On his retirement from BHP Billiton in 2012, Ross was appointed Chairman of the Australian Coal Association and Australian Coal Association Low Emissions Technologies Limited.

He was awarded life membership of the Queensland Resources Council in 2011.

Ross was a member of the Children’s Health Research Alliance board, a joint initiative of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland, until March 2018.

Ross is a member of Children’s Health Queensland Board and joined the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board in August 2015. Ross attended six Board meetings and three committee meetings in 2017-2018.

Children’s Hospital Foundations AustraliaEstablished in 2004, Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia was the national fundraising partnership of Australia’s five major children’s hospital foundations. Formed to foster stronger relationships with corporate Australia, it was the only organisation in Australia that offered direct access to a national network of children’s hospitals. By agreement of the partner foundations, Children’s Hospital

Foundations Australia formally ceased trading from 31 December 2017. In 2017-2018, Children’s Hospitals Foundations Australia distributed $55,000 to the Children’s Hospital Foundation in Queensland. The funds were directed into the areas of greatest need as determined by the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The Children’s Health Research Alliance, an unincorporated joint venture between the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Health Queensland, has determined that the first research priority should focus on child and adolescent brain cancer research. The Children’s Hospital Foundation has obtained philanthropic funding and leveraged other funding sources to support brain cancer research. The Children’s Hospital Foundation issued a call for applications in April 2018 to establish the Centre for Child and Adolescent Brain Cancer Research. This call was in addition to the Children’s

Hospital Foundation’s current annual, mid-year grants round which funds a broader range of research initiatives.

Risk management and accountabilityRisk managementThe Board, through the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee, monitors and addresses key risks pertaining to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The current Committee members are:

Operationally, the Committee discusses, reviews, and identifies actions required to manage risks in areas including reputation, investment, security and information technology. The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s risk management philosophy is to identify, assess and control those risks that may affect the achievement of strategic objectives. The risk management system incorporates a Business Continuity Plan and a Risk Register.

Internal and external scrutiny Regular internal audits relevant to each risk item on the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s risk register are undertaken by management and reviewed by the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee. These reviews are used to identify and track improvements in the control environment.

An external audit was conducted by a designate of the Queensland Audit Office (QAO). An unqualified audit opinion was issued on the 2017-2018 financial statements.

Audit CommitteeThe Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee provides assurance and assistance to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board on:

• Risk, control and compliance frameworks

• External accountability responsibilities as prescribed in the Financial Accountability Act 2009, Auditor-General Act 2009, Financial Accountability Regulation 2009, Financial and Performance Management Standard 2009, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 and Regulation 2013.

Information systems and recordkeepingInformation systemsThe Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) service, which is fully outsourced, is responsible for operating information systems and technologies so that staff have access to the information needed to conduct and support their work.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation updated its financial accounting and reporting platform to Xero in 2017-2018, providing a marked improvement in system integrations, reporting capability and operating efficiency. Further significant works have been undertaken on improving the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s core fundraising platform and website to enhance the user and our supporters’ experience, and are to be implemented in early 2018-2019.

The ICT service provided:

• Reliable access to the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s major information systems through a variety of computers and telephones.

• Leadership and guidance in identifying and resolving the information and technology implications of changes in core functions.

• Leadership in developing and implementing information management and ICT strategies, policies and standards.

RecordkeepingThe Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to improving record keeping practices to comply with the Public Records Act 2002 and the Records Governance Policy (which replaced Information Standard 40: Record keeping and Information Standard 31: Retention and Disposal of Public Records).

The Children’s Hospital Foundation Board has approved the Recordkeeping Policy, which applies to digital and paper records.

The CEO is informed regularly of updated record keeping requirements via the Office of Health Statutory Agencies and the Office of the State Archivist.

Reliability and security of the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s record keeping systems is implemented via a number of mechanisms including firewalls, systems security, secure paper storage and secure destruction bins and all record systems are supported by ICT.

People and cultureThe Children’s Hospital Foundation is focused on managing and developing our people to have the greatest impact on the lives of sick kids and their families. Our people comprise both staff and volunteers who bring the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s vision, purpose and strategic objectives to life. The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s values of Care, Respect and Recognition, Working Together, Excellence and Innovation and Accountability are embodied by staff and volunteers and underpin all of the Children’s Hospital Foundation activities.

Workforce planningThe Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to attracting and recruiting talented people who can drive our ongoing success. The Foundation has a strong employment proposition to attract a diverse and capable workforce, with a supportive and inclusive culture. The Children’s Hospital Foundation advertises directly for new positions and uses agencies to assist recruitment of specialist positions, where appropriate.

A competitive selection process is adhered to, following the principles of equal opportunity and Blue Card suitability, ensuring an excellent match between the candidate, their skills and the needs of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Once appointed, employees begin an online onboarding and induction process designed to provide the best possible experience from day one to ensure new starters are educated about their role, the organisation and its culture and practices. Over the last 12 months, our staff numbers have remained steady at 43 full time equivalents.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s workforce is made up of people with a diverse range of qualifications, skills and experience. The majority of staff are aged between 35 years and 44 years of age and 87 percent of our workforce are women. Currently, 40 percent of staff have between two and five years’ service. The permanent separation rate was 16 percent.

Leadership and management developmentThe Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to fostering a culture that focuses on supporting the performance and development of our staff, as well as ensuring our behaviours are in line with our values of accountability, recognition and respect, care, working together and excellence and innovation.

Performance and development planning is undertaken annually in line with our strategic and operational planning. It is an inclusive processes, with a focus on ongoing

conversations. Individual and team performance plans are aligned with the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s strategic plan and team operational plans.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to providing ongoing development opportunities for all employees to ensure a skilled, flexible and engaged workforce. All staff have access to professional development opportunities that are matched to their performance and development goals. Two important feedback mechanisms, an all-staff engagement survey and a 360 degree management feedback survey, were undertaken in mid 2018. Insights from these will inform and drive our focus to further improve the performance and development of our teams under our five year strategy.

Our leadership development program continues to be rolled out and aims to build leadership capability and embed our organisational values. This year our middle managers and some senior managers participated in individual coaching sessions, and four female managers participated in a Women in Leadership Program.

Staff are recognised both informally and formally for their performance and tenure. This year we recognised the need to enhance recognition across the organisation. We created a recognition system which allows for informal, peer-to-peer acknowledgment for employees. Nominations are featured on a wall each month and are aligned to our organisational values. All nominations are acknowledged and celebrated at our monthly staff meeting, with an overall winner announced.

Flexible work arrangementsThe Children’s Hospital Foundation has a flexible work policy to support employees with diverse needs. This may involve altering start and finish times, returning from parental leave in a part-time capacity or compressing work hours. Each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and supported where reasonable. Currently, 25 percent of staff are working in a part-time capacity.

The Foundation has continued to expand the implementation of key technologies, including, laptop computers, cloud based systems and others, to enable staff to work remotely and flexibly.

Staff wellbeingThe Children’s Hospital Foundation recognises that both physical and mental wellbeing is important for its people and makes every effort to create a safe and healthy working environment for staff and volunteers.

All staff and volunteers are required to complete safety education about site induction, first response (fire evacuation and safety), hand hygiene and code of conduct (ethics and integrity). The Children’s Hospital Foundation offers staff discounted gym membership to promote physical wellbeing. Each month there is a focus on a different wellbeing topic, with tips and tools provided to staff.

An employee assistance service is available for staff and their families at any time and staff are encouraged to establish and maintain an appropriate balance between their professional and private lives. This year the employee assistance service also provided training to staff on building resilience and managing work life effectiveness.

Public Sector Ethics Act 1994The Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to upholding the values and standards of conduct outlined in the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service. The Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Code of Conduct reflects the principles of integrity and impartiality, promoting the public good, commitment to the system of government, accountability and transparency.

All employees, volunteers and representatives of the Children’s Hospital Foundation have an obligation to comply with the Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct

Industrial and employee relations frameworkThe Children’s Hospital Foundation operates under the Fair Work Act 2009. Employee relations issues are managed promptly and in accordance with the legislation and internal policies and procedures. Any new policies or material changes to existing policies are implemented with employees through a dedicated training session or at team meetings.

Financial performanceThe Children’s Hospital Foundation’s revenue predominantly comes from funds raised through the generous support of the community. Total revenue for the 2017-2018 financial year was $27 million, of which $24 million came from donations and other contributions (including in-kind contributions) and $3 million from investments, dividends and market movements. Net assets

The Children’s Hospital Foundation maintained a solid financial position throughout the reporting period and was able to pay its debts as and when they fell due. As at 30 June 2018, net assets totalled $47.4 million. The investment portfolio was managed by Queensland Investment Corporation in accordance with the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Investment, Reserves and Working Capital Policy.

Financial reservesFinancial reserves are funds retained by the Children’s Hospital Foundation to ensure sustainability and to help meet its forward committments. Holding funds in reserve helps the Children’s Hospital Foundation operate effectively in times of economic difficulty, cover unforeseen or unplanned future costs that may arise, and facilitate planning for major works or activities in the future. Retaining an appropriate level of reserves is also an important factor in helping to meet the current and future needs of beneficiaries.

In the 2017-2018 financial year, the surplus was $5.08 million. Overall expenses were $5.2 million more than the 2016-2017 financial year primarily due to an increase in mission related expenses and goods and services received in kind. Net assets have increased by $5.1 million to $47.4 million of which $8.2 million is held in endowments to fund future research into infectious diseases, burns and provide for medical scholarships. The remaining assets of the organisation will fund future strategic investments into our mission related work or be invested to offset the net operating expenses of the organisation.

The development and implementation of a number of strategic initiatives have seen the Children’s Hospital Foundation:

• Develop a new five-year strategy to enable even greater investment in children’s health.

• Launch the Woolworths Centre for Childhood Nutrition Research.

• Implement a new research grants program to improve the impact on children’s health.

• Launch a new research grants program for research into child and adolescent brain cancer.

• Expand throughout Queensland our impact through additional equipment funding for improvements in clinical care.

• Grow the scale of existing patient care and entertainment, family support and volunteer programs.

• Commence a multi-year investment program in our technology to support the efficient management of our valued supporters and volunteers.

• Build our fundraising capabilities to build a stronger foundation for future generations.

• Complete stakeholder brand research to understand awareness of our work and impact.

• Invest in the development of our people.

In summary, the 2017-2018 financial year has seen the Children’s Hospital Foundation increase its impact on our sickest kids and their families and deliver a strong financial result to help work wonders for sick kids.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation continued to focus its efforts this year to fund research and programs that had the greatest impact on children’s health and patient and family support. By engaging with our partners and the community we were able to renew and grow our supporter base who helped us raise an incredible $27 million. My sincere thanks to the Children’s Hospital Foundation staff and volunteers for their commitment, passion and tireless work in helping us achieve such a successful year. Each and every day, we position ourselves for future growth so we can continue to work wonders to support our sickest kids.
