...SUDDENLY A WHITE RABBIT WITH PINK EYES RAN CLOSE BY HER. THERE WAS NOTHING SO VERY REMARKABLE IN THAT... BURNING WITH

CURIOUSITY, SHE RAN ACROSS THE FIELD AFTER IT, AND FORTUNATELY WAS JUST IN TIME TO SEE IT POP DOWN

A LARGE RABBIT-HOLE UNDER THE HEDGE.

IN ANOTHER MOMENT DOWN ALICE WENT AFTER IT, NEVER ONCE CONSIDERING HOW IN THE WORLD SHE WAS TO

GET OUT AGAIN.

AND THEN THE MOCK TURTLE DREW A LONG BREATH, AND SAID

“THAT IS VERY

CURIOUS.”design by jay merryweather Change and identity play a critical theme in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Alice begins her journey a young naive girl unencumbered by worry and responsibility. Her fall into a seemingly harmless hole chasing after the imaginatively proper White Rabbit begins a shift of change in Alice. She is then faced with varying obstacles that both physically and mentally move her toward a better understanding of her metamorphosis

from child to woman. This evolution is the crucible of Carroll's story of Alice and of

Jay Merryweather's design of this timeless masterpiece. See page 16 for more details.

design by katie poloniThis version of Alice in Wonderland features a new twist on the original images by Lewis Carroll. By applying different patterns and colors to the

originals, I was able to create a new version of how alice experienced her adventures in

Wonderland. See page 16 for more details.

alice thought this

a very curious thing, and she went nearer to watch them.

design by tyce jonesThe concept for this book is based on the relationship between the two worlds and how they exist together. The beginning starts in a realistic environment and ventures its way to an abstract, bizarre reality. The book ends with Alice coming back to her sensible world and realizing that she has matured through the experience. The book is illustrated with black, two dimensional objects to portray a visual relationship between the two worlds. See page 16 for more details.

featured at thequail creek reservoirThis photograph was taken at Quail Creek Resevoir just

north of Hurricane, Utah. One of the less well-known state parks, it is popular with boating enthusiasts. See page 15 for more details.

i wonder if i shall fall

right through

the earth!

design by j.j. embletonThe 1865 novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. With this nonsensical theme, it is a great story to look at in a different light. Considering this book

with different ideas, the illustrations and designs have given a deeper and more serious adult feel to Alice's

situation. See page 16 for more details.

featured at red cliffsThe books are pictured here at the end of a hike in Red Cliffs State Park, Utah. An easy trail to follow, it meanders through some fields and up towards this picturesque slot canyon and series of waterfalls. Red Cliffs is a small park that offers camping and hiking. See page 15 for more details.

THAT WILL BE

A QUEER THING, TO BE SURE! HOWEVER,

EVERYTHING IS QUEER TODAY.

design by jade gelskeyThe idea for my book was to use color and texture through watercolor, to help the reader become more imaginative with the whimsical nature of the text. I hope that when the reader is going through the imagery and text they are able to be transported to another place where their own imagination can be awakened and the story can come alive for them. See page 16 for more details.

featured at the timber creek overlookThis photograph was taken from the Timber Creek Overlook trail located in the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park. This easy half-mile trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding canyons and on a very clear day provides hikers the chance to see the north rim of the Grand Canyon in the distance. See page 15 for more details.

“CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER!” CRIED ALICE (SHE WAS SO

MUCH SURPRISED...)

design by john christian perkinsLewis Carroll, real name, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, wrote and illustrated the first version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 for a family friend's young daughter. At that time, opium was a very popular drug and was widely available. With the design of this version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, I wanted to capture the spontaneity and energy of a book that was penned by hand, by an author that may or may not have been on drugs. My illustrations are zany and wild, full of

energy to reflect the Carroll's imaginative scenes and mad characters. The text is crooked, and disorderly to further this idea. The whole concept behind

my design is that the author picked up this blank book with crow quill pen and ink bottle in hand and

in one golden afternoon, spewed out this classic in children's literature. See page 16 for more details.

featured at taylor creekPictured here is the Taylor Creek trail located in the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park. This five-mile trail follows the creek through the canyon, eventually ending at the Double Arch Alcove. The Kolob cliffs are visible in the background. See page 15 for more details.

ALICE WAS NOT MUCH

SURPRISED AT THIS, SHE WAS GETTING SO USED TO

QUEER THINGS HAPPENING.

design by cami tubbsIn this version of Alice in Wonderland I had fun making it is entertaining and exciting for kids, and for adults both. Overlayed on top of each image are multiple illustrations from the original book. Each image focuses on contrasting colors and making you feel slightly peculiar yet intriguing just like the content of the book does. See page16 for more details.

featured at kanarraville fallsThis photograph was taken on the Kannaraville Falls hike, located in Kanarraville, Utah. Popular with locals and free of charge, this trail follows the creek very closely until coming upon a breathtaking slot canyon and a pair of waterfalls at the end. A couple smaller waterfalls and pools along the way

boast natural slides that hikers will often stop to enjoy. See

page 15 for more details.

“IT’S ALL ABOUT AS

CURIOUS

AS IT CAN BE.”SAID THE GRYPHON.

design by kimberly shelbyThis world is ours to discover and just like our imaginations, it is endless and full of possibilities. There is perfection, disappointment, joy and pain with every step we take. But what we really remember is when we stood and the world seemed to pull

itself together just for that moment, just for us and it is flawless. See page 16 for more details.

featured at the zion overlookThe books are pictured here from the Zion Overlook up Cedar canyon. About halfway to the peak of Cedar mountain, there is a small pullover that offers this breathtaking view of Zion Canyon. See page 15 for more details.

THAT'S

VERY CURIOUS!SHE THOUGHT. BUT

EVERYTHING’S

CURIOUS TODAY.

design by danelle cheneyThis version of Alice in Wonderland was derived from the theme of games that is present throughout the story. The playing card soldiers, croquet, as well as the word and mind games all play an important role. The book as an object looks like a stack of playing cards. The title and drop cap in each chapter are custom-lettered by hand. See page 16 for more details.

featured at cedar breaksThis photograph was taken at Cedar Breaks

National Monument, located up Cedar canyon. A popular tourist destination, Cedar Breaks is over 10,000 feet in elevation and over 2,000 feet deep. Three different trails with varying difficulty are located here as well as campgrounds and a visitor center. See page 15 for more details.

WOULD YOU TELL ME, PLEASE,

WHICH WAY I OUGHT TO GO

FROM HERE?

design by tenia wallaceAlice in Wonderland is a very inspiring and creative book. When a reader picks it up they can use their own imagination and infuse it into the story. Within this book you will see a different view of Alice and her surroundings. All of the characters are custom illustrated and are infused with vector designs. The illustrations will open up a new world of Alice in Wonderland. See page 16 for more details.

featured at the twisted forestThe books here are pictured in the Twisted Forest, just northwest of Cedar Breaks. Ancient Bristlecone pines are abundant in this location and are believed to be one of the oldest living organisms on earth. A 12-mile trail through the area is popular with mountain bikers and offers stunning views of Cedar Breaks at its end.

See page 15 for more details.

AND YET—IT’S RATHER

CURIOUS,

YOU KNOW, THIS SORT OF LIFE!

design by kindal ericksonIn 1864 John Tenniel illustrated the first images for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' using woodblock prints. I wanted to use these stark illustrations to represent the history of the book, but make them my own based on what I learned from Lewis Carroll's writings.

My reading surprised me with abstracted but inspiring ideas which I reflected in rich black and white lace in combination with color and the original imagery,

creating my version of wonderland. See page 16 for

more details

featured at cascade fallsThis photograph was taken at

Cascade Falls, located up Cedar City canyon. Located close to Navajo Lake, the trail to the falls is relatively easy and only a mile long. Upon reaching the falls, hikers are rewarded with a beautiful spring bursting from the red rocks and tumbling down the hillside. See page 15 for more details.

EVERYTHING’S

GOT A MORAL‚IF ONLY

YOU CAN FIND IT.

design by kaitlin schaferWhen I was creating this book, I wanted to create something that feels like home when you pick it up. Using the colors and textures, to create certain emotions that go with each chapter of the book. I liked using my hands for this project, and creating illustrations out of scrapbook paper. After all the work, I'm really proud of how this project came out, and excited for everybody to see how it turned out. See page 16 for more details.

featured at navajo lakeThe books are pictured here

at Navajo Lake, located up Cedar Canyon. This beautiful

clear lake is popular for boating, fishing, camping and hiking, with several other attractions close by. See

page 15 for more details.

ALICE HAD BEGUN TO THINK THAT VERY FEW THINGS INDEED WERE REALLY

IMPOSSIBLE.

design by christina longhurstLewis Carroll's original story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland inspired this 'cookie-cutter' version of Alice and the assorted acquaintances that transpire. Not only do the illustrations in this book directly reflect the initial overall look of each character, making them 'cookie-cutter' characters, but they have literally become cut out characters. However, multiple characteristics, personalities, & behaviors can be and have been interpreted from each character in the story. This representation is reflected in the two layers of cut out pages for each three page illustration

that precedes each chapter. See page 16 for more details.

featured at strawberry pointThis photograph was taken from

Strawberry Point, located up Cedar City canyon. A drive down a dirt road leads travelers to this breathtaking overlook that offers views of Zion Canyon, red rock formations and Dixie National Forest. See page 15 for more details.

“OH, I'VE HAD

SUCH ACURIOUS DREAM!”SAID ALICE.

design by ari lambAlice is a child of many layers. Her adventures, thoughts and actions are organic and at times unexpected. Though the sequence of events throughout her journey seem strange, there is meaning and depth being many of her moments. She is taught to solve, dream, and look beyond the ordinary as the characters surround her in a

world rich and full of detail. The illustrations in Ari Lamb's design of Wonderland

pull you into the chaos and intricacy of a world difficult to understand and intense with beauty. See page 16 for more details.

featured at duck creekThe books are pictured here at Duck Creek which is located up Cedar Canyon. This is a popular fishing and boating site as well as a very small tourist town with various services. See page 15 for more details.
