Phonological Awareness is … An understanding of the
sound structure of language
An understanding of the words, syllables, rhymes and sounds in language.
Phonics is…
the relationship between letters and sounds
Children need to have an understanding of the alphabetic principle, i.e. the knowledge and understanding that words are composed of letters that represent sounds.
Oral Language
Talk is the key to learning and is linked to the development of literacy.
In order to become good readers children need to develop their vocabularies and oral comprehension.
Skills Development Reading instruction involves
word recognition and identification, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Writing instruction involves learning to communicate meaningful ideas and applying the rules of grammar and punctuation.
