Phonological Awareness is … An understanding of the

sound structure of language

An understanding of the words, syllables, rhymes and sounds in language.

the relationship between letters and sounds

Children need to have an understanding of the alphabetic principle, i.e. the knowledge and understanding that words are composed of letters that represent sounds.

Talk is the key to learning and is linked to the development of literacy.

In order to become good readers children need to develop their vocabularies and oral comprehension.
