About TISS
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir
Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the
Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in
the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University
under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.
Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution
of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social
realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards
creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that
promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for
all.
In pursuance of its vision and guiding principles, the Tata Institute of Social
Sciences organises teaching programmes to facilitate the development of
competent and committed professionals for practice, research and teaching;
undertakes research; develops and disseminates knowledge; and reaches out to
the larger community through extension, at the local, national, regional and
international levels.

Director's Note
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was
established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate
School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the
Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Since its inception,
the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of
excellence in higher education that continually
responds to changing social realities through
development and application of knowledge, towards
creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and
just society that promotes and protects dignity,
equality, social justice and human rights for all. TISS is
a unique institution that brings together high-quality
scholars and practitioners from Social, Economic,
Political, Physical, Habitat, Engineering, Health,
Environmental Sciences to create teaching and
research programmes to address the most critical
current and emerging issues of the nation. TISS has
been a key contributor in building human service
professionals for the social sector.
Over the years, the Institute has made consistent
contributions to civil society and the development
sector through its education, research and field action.
Today, TISS has earned recognition as an institution of
repute from different Ministries of GOI; and the non-
government sector, both national and international.
At TISS, the multidisciplinary theories in the social
sciences deal with development perspectives, policies
and praxis. The sphere of development professionals
who focus on gender, has been a vastly expanding and
diversifying one.
These professionals are being increasingly called
upon to undertake policy-related analyses and
advocacy, and work on a wide range of issues that
intersect with gender. They continuously engage with
policymakers, economic planners, non-profit
organisations and various actors in national/
international negotiations. The coursework at TISS is
capable of equipping students to participate in these
new opportunities. In the Women’s Studies program,
at the School of Development Studies, TISS admits
students with excellent academic and extra-
curricular credentials from varying disciplinary
backgrounds. These students graduate with social
awareness, strong theoretical and analytical skills to
make meaningful contributions as employees of local,
national and international organisations as
researchers, and analysts and pursue academic
careers.
We are proud to place 22 students of the batch of
2018-2020 for engagements with your esteemed
organization. We are confident that they will prove to
be worthy assets to your esteemed organization.
Prof. Shalini Bharat,Director, Tata Institute of
Social Sciences.

Dean's Note
The M.A. Women’s Studies programme has a special
place in the School of Development Studies. It gives an
edge to the school with its distinct critical social
sciences perspective. Started in 2009, the programme
has grown and diversified over the years to become
more conversant with the feminist movement and the
lives of the marginalized. The programme unravels the
multi-layered and difficult history negotiated by
women’s movements in India and across the word.
The history, as against what is popularly perceived, is
not just about women and their indignation against the
systematic processes and practices that have
marginalized them. The broad thematic areas through
which these worlds are revealed include families,
households and violence against women; women,
sexuality and violence; gender, heath and education;
feminist legal studies; women, work and labour;
gender and public policy; development, feminist
politics and praxis and identity, women’s citizenship
and governance.
The programme trains students to be critical
interlocuters to demystify and politicize both scientific
and socially normative frames that delegitimize
alternate knowledges and identities. Combining
learnings from feminist scholarship and grassroot
movements, the programme has evolved a reflexive
and participatory pedagogy. Fieldwork, an essential
feature of the programme, exposes students to the
lived realities of women and other marginalized
groups, develops among them the ability to discern the
dynamics of social exclusion.
Proficiency in research skills and expertise for policy
research and analysis also form an integral part of
their critical engagement with development
institutions and processes. The strengths of field
research coalesce with the rigours of textual
interpretation and evaluation to build a unique
research competency amongst students. Women’s
Studies alumni have their calling in diverse settings-
research institutes, NGOs, government programmes
and organizations, and advocacy groups. Their
training in interdisciplinary modes of inquiry has
prepared them for different job specifications such as
knowledge and understanding of participatory
research, evaluation research, statistical and situation
analysis. Commitment to feminist praxis and
intervention is at the centre of their work ethic. Their
profile reflects this dedication, as many of them are
working in remote areas across India, in difficult
circumstances and conditions of life. They epitomize
the future and are invaluable partners in reimagining
the present.
We hope to take this momentum initiated through the
programme further through your support and
collaboration. Let us together be, to quote Maya
Angelou, “a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”
Prof. Ritambhara Hebbar,Dean, School of
Development Studies.

Note from the Chairperson
From TISS we proudly present one of the finest
postgraduate programmes in Women’s Studies within
the Indian academia, that combines feminist theory
and praxis. Our program focuses on developing
professional expertise to use gender critically within
social science as an analytical category for research,
planning and outreach. It brings to the fore the
institutional context, vision and mission of TISS to
promote sustainable, equitable and participatory
development, equity and social justice. Over the last
few years the graduates of our Women’s Studies
programme represent some of the best intellectual and
academic resources within Women’s Studies.This
program draws from the intellectual breadth and
theoretical diversity of feminist knowledge production.
It locates this within the women’s movement as well as
international and Indian theorizations on gender,
incorporating an intersectional lens and developing a
critical understanding on social reality. The program
has a wide diversity of interdisciplinary courses on
women’s movements, feminist research, gender and
science, intersectional ties of gender, caste, class, and
tribe, issues of sexuality and violence, gender poverty
and livelihood concerns, feminist critique of
development, mainstreaming gender in development,
addressing issues of women’s work, health, education,
media, law, governance and environment.
By putting together a body of knowledge that attempts
to describe, explain and analyze women’s lives from
this critical perspective, the Women’s Studies
programme enables students to be reflexive and
question mainstream institutionalized knowledge that
has legitimized women’s neglect, absence,
subordination and oppression. The course is taught by
faculty using pedagogies that do not assume expertise
of the teachers alone, rather emphasize collective
learning experience that connects knowledge to
individual lives and personal experiences. Students are
enabled to transcend the disciplinary boundaries in
imagining and constructing new knowledge and
frameworks for social change through field placements
and research projects. program has attracted students
from various disciplines and backgrounds and we have
a rich student profile representing men and women
from India and abroad.
The Centre seeks your support and collaboration in
engaging with graduates aspiring to work on
women/gender issues, and be professionals in pursuit
of excellence and social justice.

Alumni Testimonials
"The Women's Studies programme at TISS is an interdisciplinary one and more importantly, one that
goes beyond theory and involves everyday engagement. It has equipped me with a strong feminist
perspective on issues of gender, identity and power and helped me implement and engender this
perspective in my work, and in the work environment. Personally, the course helps me navigate my
sense of politics and the lessons learned did not end with the lectures, my peers and I continue to
revisit conversations and engage."
Alankrita Anand, Deputy Manager, Centre for Studies in Gender and Sexuality, Ashoka University
MA 2015-2017
"I am currently working as a Consultant with the Centre for Policy Studies, IIT Bombay as their social
media manager and website editor. I am also managing their English Lab initiative. My time at TISS
has helped me orient myself towards a career in the social sciences, and I am grateful for the
familiarity with both feminist theory and praxis that the Women's Studies course has given me. The
course has given me exposure to a wide range of topics, ranging from Feminist Science and
Technology studies, Sexuality studies, and helped me understand marginalisation and identity from an
intersectional perspective. My extensive fieldwork experience, both during my field attachment and
for my dissertation have taught me invaluable life lessons and moulded me into the enthusiastic young
professional I am today."

Alumni Testimonials
"I work as a Delivery Specialist with Harvard Business Publishing and graduated with a masters in
women's studies in the year 2019. I work on a Global Team that delivers Harvard Business
School/Publishing content virtually to business leaders in collaboration with experts, faculty and
notable innovators. The work I do requires constant innovation, creative problem solving and
attention to detail. Apart from the obvious focus on feminist theory and praxis within and outside the
classroom, the students at TISS are encouraged to assume ownership and responsibility of social
situations instead of being passive recipients. This quality is actively recognised and appreciated in
the workplace and serves to add value to the work that alumni do at their workplaces and outside
their workplaces."
Trisha Rai, Delivery Specialist, Harvard Business Publishing
MA 2017-2019
I currently work as “Team Lead – Knowledge Creation and Dissemination” at Dasra. My work is
primarily research based, focused on key socio-economic issues affecting the Indian landscape, while
providing applied knowledge advisory to the non-profit sector. After graduating from the M.A. in
Women’s Studies programme, I have been working in different capacities contributing small inputs
promoting convergence across development programmes and within the larger purview of social
policy. Gender remains my frame of reference as it can be extrapolated to understand the correlation
between other forms of social stratification. I have worked with NITI Aayog, UN Women, TISS and the
Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai. I also recently completed a Certificate of Advance Studies in
Public Governance and Administration from ETH Zurich. The Women’s Studies programme brought to
the cohort: skills for undertaking gender analysis, perspectives on international development
narratives, grassroots immersion with field attachment programmes, feminist epistemology,
qualitative research methodology, the TISS edge and feminist ethics rooted in compassion. The
transformational journey that began with this course has remained with me and I am still learning/
unlearning and discerning as a thinking doer. I continue applying the analytical frameworks and
research skills taught in this programme.

Advanced Centre for Women's Studies
The Centre for Women’s Studies at TISS was
recognized as an Advanced Centre by the
University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2011 as
part of its XI Plan (2007-2012). The Centre
has been contributing significantly through the
activities mandated by the UGC such as research,
teaching, training, documentation, networking,
dissemination and extension activities over the
past three decades.
The Centre has the vision to emerge as a critical
centre of feminist knowledge and activism,
involved in gender related knowledge production
and dissemination within the higher education
system in India with its spheres of influence
extending to social movements, state policy, and
diverse socio-cultural, economic, and political
institutions and processes. More specifically in
the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, we at the
Centre for Women’s Studies attempt to engage
with other academic programs, in the spirit of
interdisciplinary work. We hope this helps us
make meaningful contributions to research,
action projects and administrative policies of the
Institute.
The spectrum of activities of the Centre revolves
primarily around teaching, research, and
collaborative action-oriented work.
The Centre has also been involved in networking
and extension for national and international
advocacy on programme and policy matters on
women’s issues. Research work with civil society
organisations and philanthropic organisations
on issues of discrimination on the basis of gender
and sexuality, child marriage, gender-based
violence on the internet, are some of the areas
that have been developed as part of Centre work.
The Centre has also, in the recent past, worked to
collaborate with other universities to share and
mentor WS programmes there. Several of our
faculty are involved in research and
documentation, consultancy on gender themes,
and organizing and conducting of training
programs, seminars and conferences on a range
of issues. This is where the diversity and rich
experience of the Centre’s composition is
reflected.
The M. A. in Women’s Studies and M.Phil. and
Direct PhD in Women’s Studies programmes are
the pillars of our teaching. The Centre’s faculty
members are engaged in teaching both the full-
fledged M. A. in Women’s Studies program since
2009, the M.Phil/PhD. programme since 2013, as
well as several other courses to post graduate
students across other programs of the Institute in
Mumbai and Tuljapur campus.

Women's Studies
M.A. in Women’s Studies was introduced in 2009 as
an interdisciplinary programme that seeks to bring a
synthesis between feminist understanding, knowledge
production, and issues of development. This
programme attempts to fulfil the urgent need to
critique the existing modes of knowledge. There is an
institutional emphasis on preparing academicians as
well as social and development workers who will
realize the vision of sustainable, equitable and
participatory development. There is a focus on social
welfare and social justice, with an advocacy for gender
mainstreaming. Women’s Studies has had an organic
ink with the women’s movement along with the
struggles of marginal groups in society. Therefore, the
course structure brings together the core of women/
gender centred courses along with foundation courses,
research methods, and field exposure.
FIELD WORK-
Fieldwork is an important component of the M.A. in
Women’s Studies programme as it allows the students
to transform the theoretical knowledge that they have
gained in cases into feminist praxis. It provides the
opportunity to learn by observing and participating and
allows for a contextualized and integrated learning
based on direct interaction with ground realities.
Students are placed in different women’s
organizations, feminist organizations, development
organizations, collective and people’s movements in
and around Mumbai. As part of fieldwork, they have
conducted a series of workshops, as well as
community-based stand-alone sessions on topics
ranging from sexuality to livelihood. It has also trained
students to critically analyse policy decisions wherein
male bias of state agencies, gender disparities and
dimensions of development can be questioned. Through
experiences of fieldwork and other professional
experiences, students are adept at documentation,
policy analysis, monitoring and evaluation,
interpersonal communications, conducting needs
assessment and surveys, community mobilization,
teaching, formulation and development of curriculum,
journalistic writing, and research and project proposal
writing.
M.A. in Women’s Studies offers a wide range of
courses which link feminist theories, women’s
movements, understanding and critiques of
development with a gender focus. Areas like
technology, health and education are amongst the key
focuses. Field work is an important requirement which
initiates students into the realm of work and
experience feminist practices and understanding. The
course includes dissertation writing, which is aimed at
preparing students to conduct feminist research and
documentation. There is a combination of analytical
and field-based skills geared towards an engagement
with various academic disciplines to evolve a critical
and analytical perspective on gender in society as we
as in knowledge production.

Placement Process
In accordance with the efficient functioning of the Placement Process and maintenance
of a healthy relationship between the Institute, Students, and the Recruiting
Organization (RO), certain foundational guidelines have been laid down for a smooth
channel of communication throughout the Placement Process.
Initial Communication:The timeline for the placement process with the ROs would be initiated after
interactions with the placement cell of M. A. Women’s Studies. This can be done by
emailing us on our official email id or getting in touch with members of the Placement
Cell.
Pre-Placement Talk:Subsequently, the RO will be invited to conduct a pre-placement talk (PPT) that will be
held before or during the first phase of placements. This will feature presentations by
the ROs which will be followed by an interactive session between the students and the
ROs to gain clarity on their respective requirements. The ROs are required to notify the
placement cell (prior to the conduction of the Pre-Placement Talk) of their methods of
recruitment and begin inviting applications from students (that would include their
resumes, and other application documents).
Recruitment Process:ROs are requested to abide by the following guidelines during the placement process:
Online Student Requirements Form: Organizations coming for the recruitment of
students graduating from the M. A. in Women’s Studies programme from TISS,
Mumbai will need to inform their priorities and requirements in a prescribed
Placement Form to the Placement Committee (PC)
30
Placement Process
For the purpose of allotment of slots to the ROs, the following information is
requested from the organization’s end:
-Job Description and Profile offered
-Geographical location and mobility
-Remuneration and Incentives offered
-Number of positions offered
The requirements of mode of recruitment such as written tests, group discussions,
personal interviews, etc. should be notified to the PC in advance. Accordingly, a
mutually decided timeline and interview slots will be worked out.
ROs are requested not to select or eliminate any candidate solely on the basis of the
information mentioned in the placement brochure. It is advisable that this should be
done on the basis of the submission of the CVs/resume after the pre-placement talk
(PPT) and the subsequent recruitment procedure.
To avoid uncertainties, ROs are requested to prepare and release a waiting list in
addition to the list of students that have been selected for placement.
The ROs should comply with the Institute’s non-discriminatory policy. Any
discrimination by the RO based on caste, class, sex, gender, sexuality, disability or
religion leading to disharmony among the candidate(s) will not be entertained and
may result in an intervention by the PC.
31
Placement Process
The RO is required to communicate the final decision of their selection to the
candidate(s) and the PC within TWO days of the Placement Process.
The RO is required to provide the candidate(s) the appointment letter(s) within FIVE
to SEVEN days of declaring their final selection decision.
Logistics:The ROs are required to intimate their visit to campus a minimum of 10 days in
advance so that the necessary arrangements can be made.
ROs are free to hold telephonic or off-campus interviews through video conferencing
in case they are unable to be physically present on campus due to constraints. The
SPC should be notified of the same in advance so that it can arrange and facilitate
the same in a smooth manner.
Transport will be provided for the ROs along with food during their stay on campus.
In the case of accommodation, the ROs would need to bear the required costs.
