He helped lead the Portland women’s program to a national championship in 2005, finishing the season with a 23-0-2 record. Baarts spent the last two seasons at San José State where he helped guide the Spartans to the 2017 Mountain West Conference regular-season championship. Coach Baarts comes to NM State with an extensive background in player development. While with SJSU, he guided 12 players to all-league honors, including the 2017 Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year and the 2017 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. He also aided in the development of national team players such as Megan Rapinoe, Stephanie Cox, Sophie Schmidt and Christine Sinclair during their time at Portland. Sinclair is second all-time in international goals with 173 and is the top goal-scorer in Canada’s history. As a player, Baarts was a four-year letter winner for Portland from 1987-90 and is still the Pilots second all-time leader in game-winning goals with 13. Head coach Rob Baarts converted the 5-9 Martinez to the forward position for 2018 and inserted her into the starting lineup when the Aggies switched from a 4-3-3 formation to a 4-4-2 prior to their match against Northern Illinois.

The change paid off immediately as Martinez notched her first goal of the season, in her first start, just 15 seconds into New Mexico State’s 3-0 victory over NIU, the fastest goal to open a game in NM State history.

Martinez scored again in her third start against Boise State when she received an aerial through ball from Emma Smith and found the back of the net to tie the game at one in the 72nd minute. Martinez notched her third goal of the year on a PK at UTEP.

First Time for EverythingThe weekend of Aug. 31 was a weekend of firsts for NM State as head coach Rob Baarts secured his first win as a Division I head coach in a 3-0 home victory over Northern Illinois.

In the same game, freshman Alexa Barrera recorded her first and second-career assists while Kelly Burton added her first-career goal on a 22-yard rocket off a corner kick from Barrera.

Also against NIU, Katie Martinez, a converted defender, notched her first goal of the season 15 seconds into the match on a feed from Barrera, the fastest goal to open a game in New Mexico State history, while Emma Smith recorded her first assist in the Crimson and White when she played a perfect through ball to Rebecca Mazzie who tucked away her first goal of the season in the 58th minute.

Smith also notched her first goal as an Aggie at Abilene Christian, finding the back of the net on a feed from Barrera in the 82nd minute.

Just Keep ScoringSenior forward Aileen Galicia was already New Mexico State’s all-time leading goal-scorer coming into the season and continues to add to her total. Galicia has four goals through 13 games in 2018 to bring her total to 26.

The Indio, Calif., native is a dynamic scorer who also tops the record books in multi-goal games (4) and points (62). She also creates chances for her teammates as she’s recorded 10 assists, third-most all-time.

Galicia is a decorated student-athlete as she earned First-Team All-Western Athletic Conference honors following her junior season and was named to the Preseason All-WAC team prior to the 2018 season.

Fantastic AfonsoSamantha Afonso, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., has been a fixture on New Mexico State’s backline throughout her career, appearing in 71 games while starting in 52, including every game so far in 2018, all 21 games her junior year and 19 of 20 games as a sophomore. She has also logged 4,853 minutes as a defender for the Aggies.

Afonso was also named to the 2018 Women’s Premier Soccer League Northwest All-Conference team. She represented Eugene Timbers FC Azul in the WPSL during the summer of 2018. With Azul, Afonso played both center back and outside back and was a dominant force on the backline.

She has one goal on the season, netting the Aggies' lone goal against Pacific.

All-WAC HonoreesThree Aggies were recognized by the WAC for their performances during the 2017 campaign. Redshirt senior forward Devin Hart (first-team), junior forward Aileen Galicia (first-team) and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Dmitri Fong (second-team) earned spots on the All-WAC team. Hart led the WAC in points (31), points per game (1.48), assists (9) and was second in the WAC in goals (11). Meanwhile, Galicia was third in the WAC in points (25), points per game (1.32) and goals (10). Fong led the WAC in saves (106) last season and was second in save percentage (.841).

Fresh FacesHead coach Rob Baarts signed 10 freshmen and added two transfers to his inaugural recruiting class. Paradise Valley Community College transfer Kaitlyn May and Linfield College transfer Emma Smith will look to make an immediate impact for NM State. Smith is a dynamic goal-scorer who led Linfield with seven goals as a freshman in 2017 while May is a skillful defender who will anchor the Aggies’ backline.

Home Sweet HomeNew Mexico State has 15 players from New Mexico on its roster, by far the most from any state, with two more players down I-10 in El Paso, Texas. Six of the 10 freshmen also hail from the Land of Enchantment.Dynamic DuoNM State returns two of its top three goal scorers and two players with their names all over the record books in senior

forwards Aileen Galicia and Audriana Chavez. Galicia (10g, 5a) and Chavez (9g, 4a) combined for 19 goals and nine assists for 47 points during the 2017 season.

Galicia is NM State’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 22 goals leading into her senior campaign with Chavez not far behind at fourth with 17. Galicia is also the career-leader in points with 54 (22g, 10a) while Chavez is fifth all-time with 42 points (17g, 8a).

Chavez re-wrote the record books by knocking in four game-winning goals in 2017, the most in a single-season by any Aggie — a record previously set by Galicia in 2016 (3).

Weekend in ReviewNM State hit the road for its first WAC road trip with games at California Baptist on Oct. 5, and at Kansas City on Oct. 7.

Against CBU, neither side was able to get much going against the other defense until the 44th minute when Juliette Brown buried it to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead at the break. After halftime, CBU continued to pressure NM State and got another score from Rebecca Romero in the 63rd to extend its lead to 2-0. Then, Lanai Navarro found the back of the net for the Lancers for the final tally of 3-0.

Next, the Aggies visited the Show-Me state for a showdown with preseason WAC favorite Kansas City. The Roos came out firing, getting goals from Kelsey Mothershead in the 18th minute and Lexie Howard in the 33rd for a 2-0 halftime lead. NM State played a much stronger defense half in the second half but conceded a goal to Ryann Burnett in the 76th minute to UMKC the 3-0 victory.

Up NextNew Mexico State hits the road for the last time this season as it visits Grand Canyon on Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. (MT) before heading to the Golden State for the final time to take on CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. Both matches can be streamed via the WAC Digital Network.
