Beth Shearer Clark played four exceptional years for American University, leaving her mark on each season, where her last happened to be the fi rst in Bender Arena. Upon graduation, Shearer Clark was fi rst in AU’s career scorers’ history, accumulating 1,611 points, a feat that now ranks her second amongst

all-time leading scorers. She is currently fi rst in points and scoring average in a season, recording 534 points in her last season as at AU, tallying a 19.1 scoring average. One of the greatest scorers in American’s history, Shearer Clark also was a dominant force on the glass. She pulled down 686 career rebounds in her four years at AU. On the other end of the court, Shearer recorded 218 steals and 63 blocks, placing her sixth in American University history for both categories. Shearer also had a .821 free throw percentage in the 1987-88 season, ranking third in school history. She ended her four years with a .797 average, an accomplishment that puts her in second all-time. To round out her record, she is fourth in career starts with 100. Beth Shearer Clark was inducted in 1999, alongside former teammate Jody Thorton Powell.

One of AU’s top all-time scorers as she was the fi rst female basketball player to reach the 1,000 point milestone at American University and currently stands eighth on AU’s all-time scoring list with 1,107 points. She averaged 12.7 points per game in her career and registered 72 steals during the 1981-82 season, which was

second-best ever at AU at the time. A graduate of American’s College of Public Affairs with a degree in Criminal Justice, she traded in her basketball sneakers for law books at Villanova University School of Law, where she received her Juris Doctorate in 1989. “Sister Smoke,” a nickname given to her by her father’s arch rival, Muhammed Ali, Frazier-Lyde continues to prove the critics that she’s not too old to beat the toughest competitors. She has a career record of 11-1-0 with nine knockouts, but Frazier-Lyde describes boxing as not about who is better, but more about the performance. In the modern-day rivalry, Laila Ali beat Frazier-Lyde by a majority decision. Ali, however, has since refused to agree to a rematch.

One of the great passers in AU women’s basketball history was Jody Thornton Powell. In her career from 1983-87, she ranks at the top of the school charts with 693 assists. Instead of being a scorer, she made everyone around her better with her command at the guard position. Her assist numbers each year; she began

with 143 her rookie season, 163 in 1984-85, jumped to 193 in her junior year, and had 194 in her senior campaign. In addition to creating scoring opportunities for her teammates, she played a key role on the defensive side of the ball with 244 steals in her career. Thornton Powell started 102 games for her career.

Darsi Smith Wilson played four outstanding years for AU from 1980-84. As a student-athlete, she had success, scoring 1,164 career points to go along with a 14.4 scoring average. Smith Wilson was also a powerhouse on the glass with 569 career rebounds, which ranks tenth all-time. A versatile player, Smith Wilson was an excellent

passer, dishing out 215 assists and, on the defensive end, rejecting 63 shots in her career. A great defender, she also ranks eighth all-time in steals with 198.
