Sixth Time is the Charm? The Eagles have reached the conference championship game fi ve previous times in program history, although they have come up on the short end each time. AU has lost in the Patriot League title game three times since joining the conference in the 2001-02 season, including last season’s 58-42 defeat at Lehigh. AU has been the lower seed in each of its fi ve previous championship games with four of the contests taking place on the opponent’s home court.

20-20 VisionThe Eagles have won 20 of their last 24 games to improve to 22-8, marking the fi fth time in program history they have reached the 20-win plateau. AU’s 22 wins are tied for second-most in school history with the 2009-10 team. A win in the Patriot League Championship Game would match the school record of 23 victories, which was set in the 1997-98 campaign.

View From the TopAmerican captured a share of the Patriot League regular season title for the third time in the last four years. The Eagles’ .714 winning percentage (10-4) in conference play is tied for the third-best mark in program history.

Enjoying the RoadThe Eagles have won 12 games this season away from Bender Arena -- nine true road games and three neutral-site contests -- which ties the program-record for most away-from-home victories in a season. AU also earned 12 triumphs away from home during the 1986-87 and 1997-98 seasons, although the Eagles can break the tie with a victory on Saturday.

Comeback KidsAU’s road to the PL Championship Game has certainly not been easy as the Eagles have faced considerable defi cits in each of the fi rst two tournament contests. In the quarterfi nal matchup against Holy Cross, American

trailed by nine points in the fi rst half before putting together a 19-3 run to storm into the lead and earn the 72-44 victory. Then in the semifi nal at two-time defending champion Lehigh, AU trailed 13-0 to begin the game and by as many as 16 points in the opening half before pushing the contest to overtime and coming away with the dramatic 69-64 OT win.

Gettin’ DefensiveFor the season, American is allowing 53.9 points per game, which leads the Patriot League and was ranked 13th in the country as of Monday. AU has held its opposition to under 50 points 12 games this season, each of which have resulted in victories.

60 is the NumberAmerican is 18-0 this season when scoring at least 60 points, and going back to last year, the Eagles have won their last 30 games when hitting the 60-point mark. AU’s last loss when reaching 60 came on December 20, 2009, when Maryland defeated the Eagles, 75-64.

Cleaning the GlassAU is 15-1 this season when outrebounding its opponent, and had won 18 games in a row when its held a rebounding margin before its February 23rd loss at Navy. In that game, the Eagles held a +1 rebounding margin (37-36) to snap the streak.

Shoot for the StarsShooting percentage is obviously a crucial statistic in basketball and fi ring a high effi ciency this season has directly correlated with good results on the court for American. The Eagles are a perfect 20-0 this season when shooting a higher percent from the fi eld compared to their opponents. Additionally, AU is 16-0 when outshooting its competition from three-point range. AU has won all six of its games this year when reaching 50 percent shooting as a team and is a perfect 9-0 when registering at least 40 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc.

A Little Help from Your FriendsA big reason for American’s success this season has been the strong play of its bench. The Eagles’ reserves have outscored their respective opponent’s bench in 22 games of their 30 games this season with AU holding a 16-6 record in these contests.

Strong Out of the GateAU completed non-conference play with a 10-4 record, which is tied for the third-most non-league wins in program history. The 10 victories are one shy of the 1985-86 and1986-87 squads that registered 11 non-league wins in each season.

Setting the PacePrior to the defeat to Army on January 19, American had won 11 games in a row, the sixth-longest winning streak in Division I at the time. The Eagles had not lost a game since falling at Texas Tech on November 27, and had outscored their opponents by 12.0 ppg during the stretch. The 11-game run tied a program-record for most consecutive wins, which was also accomplished during the 2007-08 season.

Award SeasonThe Patriot League recently announced its women’s basketball awards, where senior forward Liz Leer earned All-PL First Team honors for the second straight year. Junior guard Lisa Strack was a Second Team selection, while freshman guard Alexis Dobbs earned All-Rookie Team recognition.

Record-Setting Pace to 50The win over Brown on December 31st was Head Coach Matt Corkery’s 50th career victory. In his third season at the helm at American, Corkery has a 63-30 record, and he became the fastest coach to reach the 50-win milestone in program history. His winning percentage of .677 is currently second all-time in Patriot League history behind Kevin Morris’ .678, who coached at Fordham from 1993-95.

Moving On UpLeer now has 1,369 points in her career, placing her fourth all-time in program history. Leer was joined in the 1,000-point club on January 29 by Nicole Ryan, who became the 14th AU women’s basketball student-athlete to reach the mark. She now has 1,070 career points, 12th-best all time at AU.

200 And CountingLeer and Ryan continue to etch their places in the AU record books and did so at nearly identical times involving the number 200. In the victory over Holy Cross on January 22, Leer recorded her 200th career blocked shot, the most in school history, and now has 210, fi fth all-time in Patriot League history. Ryan, meanwhile, knocked down her 200th career three-pointer later in the game, also a program-record. Her 207 threes is now good for the seventh-most in the Patriot League record books.

Double Your PleasureLeer has recorded fi ve double-doubles this season, giving her eight in her career. She registered 15 points and 13 rebounds in AU’s season-opening win at East Carolina, and put together a 16-point, 14-rebound performance in AU’s triumph at Mount St. Mary’s on November 17. Her 14 rebounds matched a career-high, as did her fi ve assists against The Mount. Leer then put together a 12-point, 10-rebound effort against Sam Houston State on November 26, and then tallied her fourth double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the January 12th win at Bucknell. Most recently, Leer registered 25 points and 10 rebounds against Holy Cross on January 22. In addition to her fi ve double-doubles, she has come up one rebound shy of reaching the mark in four other contests.

More Than Just a Basketball PlayerIn addition to her on-the-court success this season, Leer has picked up academic awards as well. She was recently named to the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team. Earlier this season, she was honored with the Capital One Academic All-District Second Team. The Public Communications major with a minor in Health Promotion currently carries a 3.39 cumulative GPA.

All-Around StrackStrack has racked up solid numbers in many individual statistical categories throughout the season. She currently leads the team with 3.3 assists per game and 1.8 steals per contests, both of which rank in the top fi ve in the Patriot League. She is second on the squad in scoring (11.8 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.8 rpg). Back on December 27, Strack was named the Patriot League Player of the Week after recording 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting, along with six assists, fi ve rebounds, and four streals, earlier in the week against Troy.

Prior to this recent stretch, Kiely was registering 1.7 ppg and 1.1 rpg. In the February 9th win over Bucknell, she scored a game-high and career-best 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Ryan on a Roll Over the last 22 games, Ryan has made 47 three-pointers on 40.2 percent shooting from deep (47-for-117), and has made at least one three in 21 of those contests. This includes her 5-for-5 performance in the win over Binghamton on December 30, recognizing her as the fi rst AU student-athlete to ever be perfect on at least fi ve three attempts in a game. Ryan holds the school-record with 207 made treys in her career and reached 1,000 career points on January 29 at Lafayette.

Picking Up the HardwareThe Eagles captured the Hawk Holiday Classic on December 31st following victories over Binghamton and Brown. Leer was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player after registering 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game on 13-of-22 shooting from the fi eld. Ryan and Strack were each named to the all-tournament team. Ryan was 6-of-9 from beyond-the-arc in the two games, including a perfect 5-5 against Binghamton, while Strack averaged 11.0 and 4.0 rebounds in the tournament.

Shut Down DAU allowed 32 points to Binghamton in the win on December 30, which

marked the second fewest points given up in a single game in program history. The record was set when American surrendered 31 points to Lafayette on January 30, 2010, in a 22-point victory. The Eagles have held three opponents under 40 points this season, most recently on February 9th as Bucknell scored 38.

Block PartyThe Eagles have recorded nine blocked shots on two occasions this season, most recently occuring in the victory over Binghamton on December 30. The nine single-game blocks are tied for second in program history. The school record sits at 10, which occured on March 9, 2001 when the Eagles registered that number against James Madison.

A Perfect 10During a stretch in the Eagles’ victory over Mount St. Mary’s on November 17, American knocked down 10 consecutive three-pointers. This came during a 10:45 run of play at the end of the fi rst half and into the fi rst 9:02 of the second period. AU fi nished with 11 made threes in the game, which tied for the second most single-game treys in program history.

Leader of the PackAmerican was chosen fi rst in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, which was voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. This marked the fi rst time AU had ever been picked to win its conference. The Eagles have now improved by one spot in each of the last fi ve Patriot League Preseason Polls.

Postseason Play AgainThe 2009-10 season marked the third straight year American made a postseason appearance, which set a new program-record. It was the fourth WNIT berth for the Eagles in program history (1998, 2008, 2009 and 2010).

Inside the Matchup vs. NavyTop-seeded Navy (19-11, 10-4 PL) shared the regular season title with AU and comes into action on Saturday riding a four-game win streak. The Midshipmen defeated No. 8 Colgate and No. 4 Bucknell to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game.

The Mids defeated AU in both meetings this season after getting swept by the Eagles in the three matchups during the 2009-10 campaign. AU advanced to last year’s PL Championship Game with its 72-47 victory over Navy in the conference semifi nals last season.

American leads the all-time series against the Midshipmen, 21-16. Navy holds a 11-7 advantage in home games, although AU has won three of the last fi ve in Alumni Hall.

Saturday’s clash will be the fi fth meeting between the two programs in the Patriot League Tournament with AU holding a 3-1 record. The Eagles prevailed in quarterfi nal matchups in 2004 and 2007 and in the aforementioned semifi nal game last season. Navy’s lone PL Tournament win against American came in the 2005 quarterfi nal round.

Navy 57, American 46 - January 26, 2011 at Bender Arena Plagued by a poor fi rst-half shooting performance, the American University women’s basketball team was unable to recover in a 57-46 defeat to Navy in Bender Arena. The loss snaps AU’s program-record 14-game home winning streak, which dated back over a full calendar year to December 20, 2009, when the Eagles fell to Maryland.

Lisa Strack led the Eagles with 15 points and eight rebounds. She was 6-of-11 from the fl oor. Ashley Yencho added 10 off the bench for AU, her second straight double-digit scoring performance. Navy, meanwhile, was paced by Angela Myers’ 15 points. Audrey Bauer had 12 while Jade Geif and Cassie Consedine each recorded 10 for the Mids.

Navy 63, American 56 - February 23, 2011 at Alumni HallThe American University women’s basketball team was engaged in a tight, back-and-forth contest with Navy in Annapolis, but the Midshipmen made the plays down the stretch to earn the 63-56 victory.

Liz Leer led American with a game-high 16 points along with seven rebounds as she made her 122nd career appearance as an Eagle, tying her for the program record with Talicia Jackson ‘09. Lisa Strack, meanwhile, added 15 points and team-bests with eight boards and four assists, while Stephanie Anya chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

Angela Myers led Navy with 15 points -- which included a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line -- along with nine assists and four rebounds. Erin Edwards and Cassie Consedine also registered 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mids, while Jade Geif grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

Matt Corkery is in his third season as the head women’s basketball coach at American University. Corkery has a 63-30 career record at AU, including a 32-10 mark in Patriot League play.

Corkery has led the Eagles to two Patriot League regular

season titles in his three years, and sports the second-highest career winning percentage in conference history with his .677 mark.

The 2009-10 campaign was a historic season for Corkery’s Eagles. American fi nished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, its best ever conference record, and earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. Additionally, AU’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season. The 22 wins were the second most ever in school history, and AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth.

Additionally, junior forward Michelle Kirk was named the program’s fi rst ever conference Player of the Year, as well as a ECAC Division I All-Star and Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete. Classmate Liz Leer joined her on the All-PL First Team, marking the fi rst time in program history the Eagles have had two fi rst team selections as a member of the Patriot League.

Finally, Corkery became the second AU women’s basketball coach to be named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Melissa McFerrin received the honor following the 2008 campaign.

In 2008-09, Corkery led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in school history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

Additionally, Corkery coached three All-Patriot League selections in 2008-09, including First Team performer Michelle Kirk and All-Rookie Team honorees Ebony Edwards and Lisa Strack. Corkery oversaw the largest women’s basketball crowd in school history when 1,177 fans attended the home game against Lehigh on February 7, 2009.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last two years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign. In total, Corkery has been on the AU staff for fi ve seasons. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court.

Corkery joined the Eagles in 2004 after spending three seasons as the associate head coach at Division II Emporia State (Kan.). During his tenure with the Hornets, Corkery helped guide the squad to a 63-25 record and No. 2 rankings nationally in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

Corkery served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University from 1999-2001. During his tenure, the Ladyjacks won consecutive Southland Conference titles and made successive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000, the Ladyjacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament as a 12-seed. Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin.

From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. In 1998, Corkery was named the NJCAA Region V Coach of the Year, as his squad compiled a 34-3 record and fi nished in third-place in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Corkery earned a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1993 and a Master’s of sports and exercise sciences in 1996 from West Texas A&M University. While with the Lady Buffs, Corkery worked his way up from student assistant coach to graduate assistant and eventually earned a full-time assistant coaching position. As an assistant, Corkery mentored a Buffs squad that went 28-3, won the Lone Star Conference title and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NCAA Division II national rankings in the 1995-96 campaign. The team’s record during Corkery’s tenure as an assistant at West Texas A&M was 120-32.

A native of Whitharral, Texas, Corkery currently resides in Washington, D.C.
