From the Chief ExecutiveWelcome to the latest edition of fundraising news. Fundraising has been very much in the headlines over recent months, with much criticism being aimed at charities for the use of unscrupulous tactics, and in particular, targeting elderly and vulnerable people with pressured “selling” tactics.

We want to reassure you that we are not engaged in face to face fundraising (commonly known as “chugging”), cold calling or cold direct mail. Our supporters’ details are never passed on to third parties, and we will react promptly to any requests to change your contact preferences or remove you from our database.

Fundraising is a highly competitive business, but an essential part of our work if we want to continue to provide the very best services for the vulnerable people we support, and their families.

It’s sad that the tactics used by a small number of large charities have resulted in such a backlash for the charity sector as a whole, and we want to thank you for your support and reassure you how much we value your recognition of our work.

If you wish to make any changes to the way or frequency with which we contact you, please contact our fundraising team on 0161 283 4822 or email [email protected] you again for your support.

Tanya Farley, Jo Bernstein, Sam Bernstein, Julie Besbode and Kerrith Harris from Stockport and the surrounding area scaled the UK’s three highest peaks – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – all in a gruelling 24-hour period! The friends set an initial £3,000 fundraising target with the aim to purchase specialist equipment for Meridian, one of the Together Trust’s respite services offering short, overnight breaks to young people who have an autism spectrum condition.

Tanya, whose son James attends Meridian, said: “The Three Peaks Challenge was much tougher than we imagined. Some of the climbing had to be done in the dark with just a head torch – which isn’t great when, like me, you’re not a fan of heights!

“On behalf of the team, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us smash our fundraising target. It will benefit every young person who uses Meridian.”

Collectively, the ladies raised more than £10,000 for the service, which will be used to buy an outdoor sensory summerhouse, a bucket swing and a climbing frame for the young people to enjoy.

Sarah Hopwood, manager of Meridian, said: “We’re all incredibly grateful to the group for their great fundraising effort. It’s a fantastic achievement.

The money will enable us to add to our excellent facilities, which young people can enjoy for years to come.”

If you think you’ve got what it takes to complete a challenge like this please visit www.togethertrust.org.uk/events to find out which adventure is waiting for you.

An amazing £11,000 was raised at this year’s Cheadle Festival. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a success including our corporate supporters, suppliers, donors, volunteers, staff and visitors. There were a wide variety of attractions on offer for visitors of all ages including a fun fair, bouncy castle, crazy golf, face painting, pony rides, arts and crafts, stalls to browse, live music from the Imagine FM team and our legendary It’s a Knockout competition.

Congratulations to Plastic Fantastic (Wheatley Plastics) who won the first round of the competition and Balles (Automobile Association) who gave a glorious victory cheer as they took the second round title.

The annual Summer Draw took place on 6th July and the top five prizes including a £500 cash prize went to the following lucky winning numbers:-

08129, 11164, 18641, 07235, 14101 - All winners have now been notified.

The money raised from the event will be used to support a range of projects and activities, including the purchase of specialist equipment which makes a huge difference to the lives of the young people we support, giving them opportunities and experiences they would not otherwise have.

We are a registered charity, originally founded in 1870 as a ‘Night refuge for homeless boys’ on Quay Street in Manchester. We now provide a range of social care, special education and community support services to over 2200 vulnerable children, young people and adults and their families every year.

This includes those with learning disabili ties, autism spectrum conditions (ASC), behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, communication difficul ties, complex medical needs and sensory impairments. Our services include residential homes for looked after children, community services, special schools, an FE College and a fostering service.

Our philosophy is that everyone deserves an equal chance in life, without exception, and we will do everything in our power to help people break through barriers, take control of their lives and experience happiness and a feeling of self-worth.

The diverse range of services we offer gives us the ability to respond flexibly to changing needs and opportunities, and to draw on expertise from within the charity to

deliver high quality personalised care and support to each individual with whom we work.

Activity is coordinated from our central office on Schools Hill in Cheadle, Stockport, and many of our services are located within Manchester and the surrounding areas.

What difference could your donation or fundraising activity make?

It’s been a busy few months for Wheatley Plastics raising funds for the Together Trust

Bridge College Outdoor GymBridge College is a special FE college for students with complex needs and has a number of young people who would benefit from a space where they can take part in physical exercise safely.

The project will provide a combination of outdoor activity and gym equipment, including a swing set, parallel bars, chin up bars, air walker, rowing machine, bike and hand bike.

This equipment will benefit many of the students and can promote social interaction and peer relationships.

The new space will also help some students manage sensory processing difficulties in the form of a specialised programme and will assist with positive behaviour support through the use of the space for activity breaks from sessions. This will help students with emotion regulation and in turn increase participation and engagement in educational sessions. Ultimately the outdoor gym will enable students to increase their chances of achieving their own personal goals.

Wheatley Plastics is based in Stockport and has been providing plastic injection moulding services for over 50 years.Wheatley Plastics has supported the Together Trust since 2013 and has been involved in a variety of fundraising activities. Over the past few months there has been lots of activity! The team took part in the annual ‘It’s a Knockout’ at the Cheadle Festival and took first place. Rob Davenport, Purchasing Manager, has taken to the sky in a hair-raising wing walk and Gary Knight, Managing Director, has organised and managed a golfing event in aid of the Together Trust.

To date Wheatley Plastics has raised an astonishing £7327.68 which is a fantastic achievement.

Relationships are key for Wheatley Plastics. Their fifty years of manufacturing excellence is built on relationships with their clients, suppliers and employees. The company developed a partnership with the Together Trust because they wanted to give something back to the local community and our Newbridge Centre is directly next door to them! Wheatley Plastics now support the Newbridge Centre and SK30+ services, run by the Together Trust.

The fundraising began with Gary running the Manchester Marathon for the Together Trust and there has been lots of activity since then. Robert Davenport and Kevin Boden took part in a skydive, all the Wheatley Plastics team brought in contributions for the annual Christmas gift and hamper appeal and Easter eggs for our Easter appeal - the list of activities goes on and on.

The money raised to date has provided some fantastic resources for our services, including:

• Upgrade of our sensory room at Newbridge Centre• Upgrade of the IT suite at Newbridge Centre• Art & craft materials• Orienteering training & outdoor safety equipment‘We live in a busy and often stressful environment. It is easy to forget how fortunate we are to have our health and happiness with a great support network around us. Unfortunately there are many without what at times we take for granted. I believe every organisation has a social responsibility towards people who are vulnerable or less fortunate than ourselves. We are proud of the partnership we have built with the Together Trust over the past three years. The impact our efforts have made have been truly inspiring, even the smallest action or donation has made a massive difference to real people. In addition, the impact on the team here at Wheatleys has been huge. A real sense of

togetherness, achievement and satisfaction, knowing that the support we have given has made such a difference.’ Gary Knight – Managing Director.

Francesca Packman, Team leader at Newbridge Centre comments:

‘On behalf of myself and all of the staff and young adults that attend Newbridge, I would like to say a huge thank you to Wheatley Plastics for their fundraising achievements. We are amazed that a relatively small team of people can raise such a large amount of money in such a short period of time. The Newbridge service really means a lot to the young people that attend and the funds have enabled us to improve the facilities on offer. We have been able to upgrade the sensory room and IT suite, both of which are used for various group activities throughout the week. The Newbridge staff team is passionate about continually devising ways in which we can improve the centre to meet the diverse needs of the individuals that we support. The money raised by Wheatley Plastics enables us to fulfill these ambitions.’

Rob Davenport, Wheatley Plastics, said: “I really enjoy raising money for the Together Trust and having already done a tandem skydive last year, I really needed something more challenging. The wing walk was scary!  At first I couldn’t get my breath but after a few minutes I got used to it. I was in the air for about 15/20 minutes and every time the plane started to descend I thought, good that’s it - then he would go up again!”

How a charity partnership can help your organisation

Social accountability is becoming a necessity and advances in social media create total transparency on a global scale.Companies providing benefit to their local community by supporting charitable organisations is on the increase and set to continue!

Cause related marketing is becoming more and more popular, with a number of global and national companies linking in with charities to gain mutual benefit. We are seeking a partner to work with in the North-West on a future campaign.

Here at the Together Trust we believe that a true corporate partnership creates openings for each party to build joint business opportunities. Whether you join us as a Charity of the Year partner or support us with a one-off donation or anything in-between, there are a multitude of opportunities to strengthen your social profile.

Brand Association – Linking with a reputable North-West charity, with a long history and heritage in the community, could help to strengthen your organisation’s social footprint.

PR Opportunities – Involvement with a charity can create some great PR and marketing opportunities. Every time your employees take part in fundraising activities there is a story to be told. We can assist in the promotion of the partnership through our in-house press office who will release any stories of interest to the local and wider media.

Social Media – As a charity with a long history and rich heritage in our local community, we know the importance of evolving over time.

That’s why we have a key focus on social media campaigning and a committed member of the team pro-actively engaging in this channel. You can be sure of gaining more exposure through our social media activity.

Cause Related Marketing – Here we look at commercial activities where your organisation could form a partnership with the Together Trust to market an image, product or service for mutual benefit.

Corporate Volunteering – We offer a range of corporate volunteering opportunities. We have a number of fun and innovative projects that enable corporate volunteers to develop their skills and make a real difference to real lives in their community.

Dedicated Account Management – Working with you to set a joint strategy to help you achieve your organisation’s corporate social responsibility goals.

Recently we have had fantastic support from our corporate partners. This has included sponsorship and

volunteer support at our Cheadle Festival, event participation, gifts in kind, corporate volunteering and skills-based volunteering. As you can see from the pictures, it has been a busy period!

You’ve bought waterproof jackets for the walking group at one of

our adult community services, so young adults with disabilities can

enjoy the great outdoors whatever the weather.

The funds you have raised and/or donated have made such a difference to the lives of the individuals and families we support. Here are some highlights from the past couple of months:

You’ve bought barbeques for two homes supporting young people with autism and disabilities, helping them to enjoy our great British summer!

You’ve enabled students with autism at Inscape House School to participate in drama workshops and enjoy a visit to the Royal Exchange Theatre

You’ve bought a trampoline for a residential children’s home

You’ve bought gardening and outdoor sensory equipment for a

residential home for young people with disabilities, so they can be

involved in a greater range of activities in the garden.

You’ve funded an end of school year reward trip to York for students with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties attending Ashcroft School

You’ve paid for garden improvements and equipment for a gardening group for young adults with disabilities, so they can develop their skills selling their garden produce at the local market, re-investing the funds from their enterprise into their gardening project.
