GRIT –The Power of Passion and Perseverance

a. - Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently noted

her lack of “genius,” Duckworth, now a celebrated researcher and professor, describes her

early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to

the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a unique combination of

passion and long-term perseverance.

In Grit, she takes readers into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at

West Point, teachers working in some of the toughest schools, and young finalists in the

National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what

can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what

she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie

Dimond to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete

Carroll. b. EI 2.0

- By now, emotional intelligence (EQ) needs little introduction—it’s no secret that EQ is

critical to your success. But knowing what EQ is and knowing how to use it to improve your

life are two very different things.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 delivers a step-by-step program for increasing your EQ via four,

core EQ skills that enable you to achieve your fullest potential:

1)Self-Awareness

2)Self-Management

3)SocialAwareness

4)RelationshipManagement

The Team is open to recommendations.

12. Molly has provided the 10 tips for time management -the team discussed these points The most important take away was to know why you are going to work

You are 100x more valuable to your company than they are to you. There are millions of companies, there is only 1 you.

Walk in every day thinking “this place is lucky to have me” not “I am lucky to have this place.”

The hardest working person always gets more work to do. Don’t confuse people giving you more work to do as a pat on the back, it is just them getting their work life balance on at your expense.

If you find yourself working more than 40 hrs, you need to ask for more resources. This is the most common pitfall of new leaders. They fear asking for more resources is a sign of failure. It is not. It is a sign of leadership.

There is a breaking point past 40 hrs. If you get there and then ask for help, it is like throwing a drowning person a bicycle. You can’t adequately train another person while you yourself are not a float.

Plan YOUR vacations around what you need, not what fits into your work schedule. None of us is that important that we can’t take vacation when we want to.

A vacation is one where you don’t work. Try to turn off 100%. Have someone on your team cover for you. If your people aren’t strong enough have your boss cover.

If you are supposed to work 40 hrs a week and end up working 60, ask for more days off to make up for it.

Your calendar is your calendar. Block time on it for you to get your own work done or even a work out in. People will take up all your time if they see free space. Block off however many hrs a day you need to get your work done, so that you don’t work late every night.

Finally, PLEASE PLEASE know what you are working for. Is it to be CEO, is it to retire at 55, is it to make a million dollars a year? Because work for the sake of work is pointless.

13. Please read chapters 5 and 6 in the book Lean In for our next meeting and be

prepared to discuss the top 2 take learnings from the reading

14. There is a lot of good information from the The MIT Download link: Please take a

look at the topics, this link was shared by Neil Ackerman at the F4SS Connect Conf.
