Masternodes

In addition to traditional Proof of Work (PoW) rewards for mining Wolfcoin (WOLF), users are also rewarded for running and maintaining masternodes. Masternodes are used to power Private Send, Instant Send, and a governance system. Users are rewarded for running masternodes; 80% of the block reward is allocated to pay the masternode network. 20% of the block reward is allocated to pay the X11 PoW miners.

Masternodes enable the following services:

• Instant Send allows for near-instant transactions. Wolfcoin Instant Send transactions are fully confirmed within two seconds.

• Private Send gives financial privacy by concealing the source of funds on the blockchain.

Masternode owners must hold 10,000 WOLF in their dedicated Wolfcoin wallet, which the wallet proves by signing a message and broadcasting it to the network. Those coins can be spent at any time, but spending them will cause the wallet to lose masternode status and stop earning rewards.

Fees

Transactions on the Wolfcoin network are recorded in blocks on the blockchain. The size of each transaction is measured in bytes, but there is not necessarily a correlation between high value transactions and the number of bytes required to process the transaction. Instead, transaction size is affected by how many input and output addresses are involved, since more data must be written in the block to store this information. Each new block is generated by masternodes and miners, who are rewarded with a block reward for completing the work to generate the block. In order to prevent the network from being filled with spam transactions, the size of each block is artificially limited. As transaction volume increases, the space in each block becomes a scarce commodity. Because masternodes and miners are not obligated to include any transaction in the blocks they produce, once blocks are full, a voluntary transaction fee can be included as an incentive to the miner to process the transaction. Wolfcoin wallets include a small fee by default, although many masternodes and miners will process transactions even if no fee is included.

Private Send works by creating denominations of 10, 1, 0.1 and 0.01 WOLF and then mixing these denominations with other users. Creation of the denominations is charged at the default fee for a standard transaction. Mixing is free, although a small transaction fee is charged for the Private Send transactions. Spending inputs mixed using Private Send incurs the usual standard or Instant Send fees, but to avoid creating a potentially identifiable change address, the fee is always rounded up to the lowest possible denomination. So, it is important to deduct the fee from the amount being sent if possible, to minimize fees. Combining Instant Send and Private Send is more expensive due to this requirement and the fact that a Private Send transaction may require several inputs,


Instant Send

Traditional cryptocurrencies must wait for a certain period of time for enough blocks to pass to ensure that a transaction is both irreversible and not an attempt to double-spend. This process is time-consuming. Other cryptocurrencies achieve faster transaction confirmation times by centralizing authority on the network to various degrees.

WOLF is not affected by these limitations because of its masternode network. Masternodes check whether or not a submitted transaction is valid. If it is valid, the masternodes lock the inputs for the transaction and broadcast this information to the network, effectively promising that the transaction will be included in subsequently mined blocks and not allowing any other spending of these inputs during the confirmation time period.

Instant Send technology will allow WOLF to compete with nearly instantaneous transaction systems such as credit cards.


Private Send

Private Send gives you true financial privacy by concealing the origins of your funds. The WOLF in your wallet is comprised of different “inputs”, which you can think of as separate, discrete coins. Private Send uses an innovative process to mix your inputs with the inputs of two other people, without having your coins ever leave your wallet. You always retain control of your money.

The Private Send process works like this:

1. Private Send begins by breaking your transaction inputs down into standard denominations.

2. Your wallet then sends requests to masternodes. These masternodes are then informed that you want to mix a certain denomination. No identifiable information is sent to the masternodes, so they never know your wallet’s identity.

3. When two other people send similar requests, a mixing session begins. The masternode mixes up the inputs and instructs all three users’ wallets to pay the now-transformed input back to themselves. Your wallet pays that denomination directly to itself, but in a different address (called a change address).

4. In order to fully conceal your funds, your wallet must repeat this process a number of times with each denomination. Each time the process is completed, it’s called a “round”. Each round of Private Send makes it exponentially more difficult to determine where your funds originated from. The user may choose between 2-8 rounds of mixing.

5. This mixing process happens in the background. When you wish to make a transaction, your funds will already be anonymous, and no additional waiting is required.

Note that Private Send transactions will be rounded up so that all transaction inputs are spent. Any excess WOLF will be spent on the transaction fee.

IMPORTANT: Your wallet only contains 1000 of these “change addresses”. Every time a mixing event happens, one of your addresses is used up. Once enough of them are used, your wallet must create more addresses. It can only do this, however, if you have automatic backups enabled. Consequently, users who have backups disabled will also have Private Send disabled.


X11 Hash Algorithm

X11 is a widely used hashing algorithm that utilizes a sequence of eleven scientific hashing algorithms for the proof-of-work. This is to keep the processing distribution fair, and coins will be distributed in the same manner that Bitcoin’s were originally intended to be. X11 is intended to make ASICs much more difficult to create, thus giving the currency ample time to mature before mining centralization becomes a threat.

X11 is the name of the chained proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm that is partially inspired by the chained-hashing approach of Quark, adding further “depth” and complexity by increasing the number of hashes. The X11 algorithm uses multiple rounds of 11 different hashes (blake, bmw, groestl, jh, keccak, skein, luffa, cubehash, shavite, simd, echo), thus making it one of the safest and most sophisticated cryptographic hashes.

X11 Advantages

The increased complexity of the chained algorithm provides enhanced levels of security compared to single-hash PoW networks as they are not protected against security risks like SPOF (Single Point Of Failure). For example, a possible hack that “breaks” the SHA256 hash could jeopardize the entire Bitcoin network until the network shifts through a hard fork to another cryptographic hash.

In the event of a similar hack, a digital currency using the X11 PoW would continue to function securely unless all 11 hashes were simultaneously breached. Even if some of the 11 hashes were proven unreliable, there would be adequate warning for a digital currency using X11 to take measures and replace the problematic hashes with other more reliable hashing algorithms.

The X11 algorithm can provide increased confidence for its users and potential investors that single-hash algorithms cannot. X11 provides increased safety and longevity for store of wealth, investment diversification, and hedging against risks associated with single-hash currencies plagued by SPOF (Single Point Of Failure).


Dark Gravity Wave

DGW or Dark Gravity Wave is an open source difficulty-adjusting algorithm for Bitcoin-based cryptocurrencies that was first used in Dash and has since appeared in other digital currencies. DGW was authored by Evan Duffield, the developer and creator of Dash, as a response to a time-warp exploit found in Kimoto’s Gravity Well. In concept, DGW is similar to the Kimoto Gravity Well, adjusting the difficulty levels every block (instead of every 2016 blocks like Bitcoin) based on statistical data from recently found blocks. This makes it possible to issue blocks with relatively consistent times, even if the hashing power experiences high fluctuations, without suffering from the time-warp exploit.

• Wolfcoin Core has implemented Dark Gravity Wave Version 3.0 to further improve difficulty re-targeting with smoother transitions. It also fixes issues with various architectures that had different levels of floating-point accuracy through the use of integers.

Emission Rate

Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are created through a cryptographically difficult process known as mining. Mining involves repeatedly solving hash algorithms until a valid solution for the current mining difficulty is discovered. Once discovered, the miner is permitted to create new units of the currency. This is known as the block reward. To ensure that the digital currency is not subject to endless inflation, the block reward is reduced at regular intervals. Graphing this data results in a curve showing total coins in circulation, known as the coin emission rate.

While Wolfcoin is based on Bitcoin, it significantly modifies the coin emission rate to offer a smoother reduction in coin emission over time. Wolfcoin like Bitcoin halves every 400,000 blocks to help reduce inflation.


Understanding Wolfcoin Masternodes

A masternode is a server with a full copy of the Wolfcoin blockchain, which guarantees a certain minimum level of performance and functionality to perform certain tasks related to block validation, as well as Private Send and Instant Send. The masternodes are rewarded for this service, using a concept known as Proof of Service. This is in addition to the Proof of Work done by miners to secure the blockchain.

Anyone can run a masternode. The objective is to have enough decentralization to ensure that no single person controls a significant fraction of the masternodes. However, to avoid bloating the network with unnecessary masternodes or encouraging reckless operators, there is one required condition: you must hold 10,000 WOLF in your Wolfcoin Masternode Wallet. If the owner moves or spends those coins, the masternode stops working and rewards cease.

Masternodes are rewarded by the network for the Private Send, Instant Send and governance services they provide. 80% of the block reward is paid out to the masternodes and 20% to miners. Masternodes are randomly selected for rewards in each block (approximately every 60 seconds). As more masternodes are created, the duration between rewards increases. Due to the selection algorithm, there is always an aspect of randomness to reward selection, but in the long term all masternode owners should receive similar rewards. If the collateral behind a masternode is spent, or if a masternode stops providing services to the network, it is removed from the masternode list until normal service resumes. This way, masternodes are given incentive to provide efficient and reliable services to the network.

Having many servers holding a full copy of the blockchain and working together for the network is extremely useful. Thanks to the reward system, there is no risk of not having enough masternodes, and the developers can rely on them quickly to deploy new features. This is the true strength of Wolfcoin: an incentivized system of thousands of distributed servers working 24/7 means that Wolfcoin can scale more efficiently and deploy services more quickly. The more masternodes, the better and safer the Wolfcoin network.


Masternodes vs. Mining

Wolfcoin, like Bitcoin, is based on a decentralized ledger of all transactions, known as a blockchain. This blockchain is secured through a consensus mechanism; in the case of both Wolfcoin and Bitcoin, the consensus mechanism is Proof of Work (PoW). Miners attempt to solve difficult problems with specialized computers, and when they solve the problem, they receive the right to add a new block to the blockchain. If all the other people running the software agree that the problem was solved correctly, the block is added to the blockchain and the miner is rewarded.

Wolfcoin works differently than Bitcoin because it has a two-tier network. The second tier is powered by masternodes (Full Nodes), which enable financial privacy (Private Send), instant transactions (Instant Send), and the decentralized governance. Masternodes are also rewarded when miners discover new blocks. The breakdown is as follows: 80% of the block reward goes to the masternodes and 20% goes to miners.

The masternode system is referred to as Proof of Service (PoSe), since the masternodes provide crucial services to the network. In fact, the entire network is overseen by the masternodes, which have the power to reject improperly formed blocks from miners. If a miner tried to take the entire block reward for themselves, the masternode network would orphan that block, and it would not be added to the blockchain.

In short, miners power the first tier, which is the basic sending and receiving of funds and prevention of double spending. Masternodes power the second tier, which provide the added features that make Wolfcoin different from other cryptocurrencies. Masternodes do not mine, and mining computers cannot serve as masternodes. Additionally, each masternode is “secured” by 10,000 WOLF. Those WOLF always remain under the sole control of their owner . The funds are not locked in any way. However, if the funds are moved or spent, the associated masternode will go offline and stop receiving rewards.


Payment Logic

Masternode rewards are determined using a completely decentralized deterministic queue with probabilistic selection.

Global list

Every masternode appears in the global list. Their position in this list is determined by their time since the last reward according to the network, not the blockchain. New masternodes joining the network and masternodes receiving rewards are placed at the end of the list. Operational, active masternodes that are restarted using the rpc commands ‘masternode start’ or ‘masternode start-alias’ are also placed at the end of the list. Using the new rpc command ‘masternode start-missing’ avoids this. As masternodes are moved to the end of the global list, the remaining masternodes slowly migrate towards the top of the list.

Probabilities

Because selection is determined by block hash entropy, it is impossible to predict when a payment will occur. Masternode operators should expect considerable variance in reward intervals over time. Once a masternode enters the selection pool, rewards become a probability. Nodes in the selection pool are selected for rewards randomly.

Once a node is selected for payment, it is moved to the back of the list and cannot be selected again until it re-enters the selection pool.

Quorum Selection

Instant Send transactions are secured using a consensus of deterministically selected masternodes. This set of masternodes is called a quorum and must be in a majority agreement for a successful lock of the transaction inputs. Multiple quorums are self-selected for each input in an Instant Send transaction using the mathematical distance between the hash of each input and of the set of masternode funding transactions.

Each masternode receiving the Instant Send transaction lock request compares the hash of the masternode’s funding transaction to the hash of the input requesting the lock. After validating the inputs are not spent, the ten masternodes furthest from this hash broadcast their acceptance of the lock.

All Instant Send inputs must be at least six blocks old or the transaction will be rejected.
