Hibernation in the summer time……

While most people hibernate in the winter time to keep themselves out of the bone chilling and snowy winter weather, I have been hibernat-ing in the summer time. While it has been mild here in central Texas, we recently had a few weeks where it was a few degrees above 100 for sev-eral days. When it gets this hot, I don’t get out much. After several weekends in a row of not budging from the recliner and missing several car shows, I decided that yesterday was the day I came out of hibernation. The temperature was in the mid 90’s, but I was determined to get out and enjoy the evening. That is exactly what I did. Dicks Classic Garage in San Marcos, Texas was hosting one of their monthly cruise-ins, so I headed south on I-35 around 4:30pm to get it go-ing. When I left the house it was pouring the rain, although the more I drove south the sun came back out and the temps heated back up. Just south of Austin, here come the rains again, but it did not stop me, I did not turn around as I could see light skies ahead of me. As I got to San Marcos the warm sun was back and the cruise-in was great. After shooting some photos, I decided to duck inside to check out the museum. Upon returning to the outdoors, the dark clouds had fol-lowed me and temps dropped to a nice level. The best thing is that the remainder of the show remained dry. The evening was complete! Several really nice cars, a cool display in the museum, and great food at Henry’s and I was back on the high-way headed north with the sunroof open and windows rolled down on the Monte Carlo! What a great way to come out of hibernation in the summer time! WMM

Donald Hardy from Floydada, Texas brought out his slammed ‘61 Ford Ranch Wagon! Wagons are one of the automobile types that caught on prob-ably a decade ago and are still going strong!Imagine drving Don’s ride across coun-try with the family to any of the gather-ings. Tons of room for all your “stuff” and being comfortable in addition to all the fun!!

A light yellow interior is the perfect col-or and the large grey 5 spokes set it off!

(top) The interior is mostly original and has the addition of a 3rd pedal which adds to the excitement of driving this way cool wagon!

Dual 4’s top the Ford Engine, nice detail under the hood will also catch your eye!

60’s cars....just add wheels and a cool low stance!!!!

If I tried to list all the modifiations on Neil Dezzotti’s ‘56 Chevro-let, my hands would cramp from typing so much. Neil drove his truck in from Santa Fe, Texas to play in Austin for a weekend during the Lone Star Roundup!

The paint is simply flawless, the stance is spot on, the chrome work is im-maculate.

Neil’s ‘56 sets low over a cool set of chrome wheels wrapped in wide whites for “that look”.

At any angle, Neil’s ‘56 Chevrolet will keep you looking for quite a while trying to determine what all he did to the truck.

The customization is not over the top or gaudy, it is subtle and flawlessly executed. You know things have been done but trying to figure them all out will take you a while.

Can you pick out all the modifications?

This ‘49 Chevrolet Fleetline is as cool as they get. It has several of the pe-riod correct options installed as well as a perfect gold paint job.

The altitude has clearly been adjusted to the “lower” position. The wide whites are spotless as are the custom wheels.

I’d hate to have been responsible for the chrome plating bill for this ride.

The option seen below in the left and right photos hanging from the passenger side door window were seen on various different automobiles of this erra.

Can you guess what it is?

If you think you know email me @[email protected] let’s discuss your ideas.

(top left) Hellions CC member Trey brought out this cool ‘62 Pontiac. The dark red paint is just perfect as are all the chrome trim pieces.

The wheels are large 5 spoke versions and tuck quite nicely inside the front and rear fenderwells.

(bottom center) I do believe the model of the weekend at LSRU was indeed the Mercury. Many differeent body styles, model years and customization made for one cool custom weekend.

This ‘50 Merc belongs to Justin Saunders of College Station.

All the way from Florida is Tim Mercury in his stunning ‘50 Merc Custom. I love the color scheme and the cool caps and wide whites.

‘49 Ford Shoebox - Tom Jones - Caddo, Oklahoma. These cars are really attracting my attention whereever I go. They are very cool, very stylish and hold up well to customization. They also tend to be easy on the budget. Even though Tom belongs to the Broke Bastards CC.

(top left) Mike Sneed drove all the way from Memphis, Tennessee in this stunning ‘46 Ford.

The stance is right on, has a khaki top and perfect maroon paint. The wheels are simple black steelies with Ford caps.

(top right) The interior of Mikes is simple yet very functional with the after-market gauges, Vintage Air A/C and just the right amount of bright work.

(bottom center) One of my favorite details of tthe ‘46 Ford is this Mercury steering wheel with the Mercury Man matching the color extremely well.

This steering wheel is a custom piece for this car but was an original option on Mer-cury’s back in the day.

(top left) Dave Foshe’e has this beautiful most-ly original appearing ‘34 Plymouth Coupe. The exterior two-toned color could very well have been factory colors, but if not, who cares this car is awe-some and the wide whites and orange weels really set it off.

Dave is from Simonton, Texas and is very active in the hot rod world as he belongs to Goodguys as well as the Lone Star Street Rod Association.

(top right) The inerior has factory looking style with very subtle upgrades. These upgrades include aftermarket gaues, leather wrapped banjo style ster-ring wheel and upgraded shifter and emergency brake handle.

(bottom center) The Desoto Fire Dome Hemi with 6 deuces top it all off! The engine bay of Dave’s coupe is simply stunning!

(top left) Mark Parker of Marble Falls, Texas owns this over the top ‘32 Ford. It sets really low over a round of large modern billet wheels, has suicide doors and flawless two tone silver and deep red paint.

(top right) Here is another angle of Mark’s 32 that does not dissapoint. The back door swings open to reveal clean dark red carpet that perfectly matches the top portion of the two-tone paint.

(bottom center) The interior is very clean and covered in comfortable ligh grey leather interior with a tilt ban-jo leather wrapped steering wheel.

You don’t see many ‘52 Pontiac Chieftains, especially as nice as this one. It is owned by Eric Cook of Friendswood, Texas. The bright green paint is flawless and the body is as straight as an arrow.

The wide white wall tires and smooth caps really set it off as does the chrome trim.

(top) The Pontiac emblems on the rear quarters are really cool on this mild custom (bottom) You can see the reflection of the puffy white clouds in the paint on the roof. Super Nice!!!!

The deep purple paint is outstanding on Johnny Torres’ ‘50 Plymouth from Kansas. Check out that stance with chrome rims and white walls.

The last time I saw this ‘51 Ford Victoria it was inside one of the buildings at the Grand National Roadster Show back in January. It has also been on the pages of this very magazine a few months back. It is great to see Mark & Kelly Skipper’s cool custom in The Lone Star State!!!!

(top left) All the way from Sacre-mento, California was this stunning low slung ‘48 Mercury owned by Goran Lassell.

The light brown paint is simply flaw-less and it sets extremely low and the chrome caps and steel wheels are wrapped in wide wide whites.

(top right) Here is another angle that shows the killer stance, pounds and pounds of perfect chrome trim.

(bottom center) The interior has a great contrast of color with the body. The gaug-es are aftermarket and the steering wheeel is also way cool.

This ‘56 Ford Victoria sets just right and is basically the color of a creamsicle with vanilla and orange ice cream. The stance is perfect at any angle and the wheels and white walls are period correct.

The ‘56 is from Texarkana and has grey leather interior with just the right amount of stainless trim and a painted black dash.

Does the name Landis Chisen-hall ring a bell? Maybe not? Well, I can tell you he is one cool Kat as he is the son of Vintage Air’s owner Jack Chisenhall.

This ‘36 Ford 3 window is certainly cool. It has Dodge taillights, and has nerf bars that have been subsituted for bumpers and is painted in Steve Mc-Queen Green.

Landis’s ‘36 is powered by a Mast Mo-torsports 416ci L99 engine and has 14” Baer brakes for stopping power at all 4 corners along with Budnik wheels.

The Ford was a 7 year build and when you see it up close you can certainly see why.

It has a rollcage that ties into the frame and the interior has a “race car” flare and has a weight bias of 57% to the rear. It has wine colored leather interior with racing belts to hold him in the seat while running it on road courses etc.

Some facts include 500+ horse power and 500+ lb ft of torque. It will brake from 60-0 in around 140 feet and run the 1/4 mile in 13.28 seconds.

Phil Vickery has this cool and low ‘53 Chevrolet. He cruised in with obvi-ous style from Mt. Pleasant, Missouri.

The exterior hue of choice was on off white primer. The top is done in a ligh blue and screams mild custom.

From the lake pipes, to the black steel-ies, spider caps and wide whites this ‘53 is one smooth ride.

The interior sports a blue flaked ster-ring wheel, with matching blue and off white mexican blankent seat covers. The dash is the same color as the roof.

If you look closely at the bottom left pho-to right above the glove box, you can see that even The Legendary Gene Winfield approves of Phi’s ‘53!

I do to! Way cool Phil!!!

It is a perfect color of dark red, it has wide whites and black steel wheels.

Dee Matinez drove in to The Lone Star State with his awesome ‘58 Chevrolet Apache Pickup.

Dee’s truck is litterally setting on the ground, has perfect blue paint and cool chrome wheels with wide whites.

One easy way to tell that this truck is a ‘58 and not another year is by checking out the dual headlights on either side of the front end.

The interior carries on the blue theme and has a custom sterring wheel that ap-pears to be borrowed from a Chevrolet Impala but has a little more custom work done to it.

Bench RacingBench Racing is defined in several different ways. The urban dictionary defines Bench Racing as:

1. To discuss quarter mile elapsed time of a car based on a list of modifications or horsepower estimate.2. To discuss the estimated output (in horsepower) of one engine versus another based on lists of modifications done to each engine.3. To discuss the estimated output (in horsepower) of one engine versus another based on lists of modifications done to each engine.

While I do agree with the Urban Dictionary’s definition of Bench Racing, Bench Racing in the context of this section of the magaine will be defined as:1. Discussion of ANYTHING automobile related between at least two individuals with the goal of passing time at a car show, sharing automotive related ideas, opinions or entertaining themselves or others.

Please feel free to share your bench race session wtih the readers by emailing:[email protected]

Ya’ Gotta Drive em’….. Well I’m a huge believer in the saying from Goodguys “Ya’ Gotta Drive em”’. I’m very sad to say that I haven’t been practicing what I preach. A few of my close friends have threatened to disown me if I don’t get the car out today and drive it! So, today folks I’m going to do just that. Even though the magazine is “almost” done, I’m still going to get the Impala out of the garage, wipe the month’s worth of dust off of it and go cruise somewhere. Well as I promised, I got the Impala out and drove it. First place was the gas station. Then I realized I didn’t have my gas cap, so I went back to the house to get it. I then just cruised around my small town. It ran flawlessly, the A/C was blowing cold and the temperature of the water was doing well. This was really the first time I had gotten to get it when the weather was in the high 80’s or low 90’s while I was driving it. This was certainly a shakedown run since the last time I had it out it had to be brought back on a flatbed. While I drove mine…are you gonna drive yours? WMM
