B Justin Holland: African American Pioneer of the Classical Guitar in the US | Jhon Akers

This class will combine history with live music (classical guitar) and literature to look at the career of the most remarkable figure of 19th century music in America, Justin Holland. Born in Norfolk County, Virginia in 1819, Holland is the author of the period’s best guitar method; a transcriber of dozens of musical compositions; composer of 20+ solo guitar pieces; the first African American professional in Cleveland, Ohio; and a strident voice for equality and justice. The second half of the class will move from Holland to Carl Sandburg to Langston Hughes—both devotees of guitar and music-inspired literature, following in the path of Holland.

C Dan Brown Inc. | A. K. Anderson

The profits from The Da Vinci Code alone would leave someone set for life. But 2009 finds two more major Dan Brown events: in May, the opening of the Angels and Demons movie, then, on September 15th, the release of his latest novel, The Lost Symbol. This class will focus on these two works to ask questions such as: What do so many find appealing in Brown’s fiction? To what

extent do his writings distort/fabricate history? And, most importantly, is there any way I can get a loan from him? The class will be accessible for those not familiar with either Angels or Symbol.

D How to Improve Your MemoryKara Bopp

We will discuss factors that influence our everyday memory. Participants will learn about mnemonic devices and how to implement these general memory strategies in order to improve memory for information such as names or facts. We will also examine different forms of memory and the developmental trajectories over the lifespan.

E Dead Men Do Tell Tales: An Introduction to Autopsy and Forensic Pathology | Noel Brownlee and George Shiflet

This course will discuss the fact and fiction behind some of the popular forensic television shows, and will demonstrate the solving of real forensic pathology problems through evaluation of case studies. Along the way, the class will touch on topics such as: the history of the use of the autopsy; what happens when we die (a consideration of post-mortem findings); and the differences between medical and forensic autopsies.

F Is America in Decline as a Great Power? | John Farrenkopf

One of the great themes in the study of world politics is the rise and fall of great powers. In the American case, the US emerged as a great power in the late 19th century. It soon sought to apply this power globally, aspiring to be the architect of world order for the first time under Wilson. Under FDR and Truman this goal was finally achieved. Fundamental to America’s ability to maintain and sustain world order has been its power and strength as a nation. A number of times since World War II the question of whether America as a great power is experiencing relative decline has arisen. This class will discuss this pivotal question in world politics.

G Unstoppable Nature, Not Human Activity, Is the Primary Cause of Earth Warming | Frank Machovec

Professor Machovec, who served as a meteorologist before becoming an economist, will present evidence that challenges the politically-popular claim that man’s industrial activities are largely responsible for earth warming. The class will consist of a presentation for laymen supported by 30 color slides, followed by a Q & A session.

H Swine Flu and the Major Pandemic to Come | Bob Moss

The great influenza of 1917-1918 killed 50 million people worldwide, and 500,000 here in the US. This year we’ve had the swine flu scare which, as of May, has turned out to be minor in comparison. But experts around the world believe we’re due for more pandemics. Why? And what should you do to prepare?

I Civil Discourse: Turning Conflict into Common GroundLinda Powers

Using the principles of civil discourse, you can learn to communicate effectively with listeners whose views are different from your own. We’ll explore a formula for developing common ground with family, friends, and co-workers to create an environment of cooperation and collaboration.

J A Walk in the Wofford Woods Doug Rayner

One of the many great additions to the Wofford campus in recent years has been our Arboretum. Participants in this class will receive a guided tour of these trees from Dr. Rayner. In the case of inclement weather, the group will stay indoors and learn about the Arboretum in a dry setting.

K Becoming a Chocolate Connoisseur | Joe Sloan and Dave Whisnant

This course will provide an introduction to selecting and tasting fine chocolates. We will briefly examine the origins, manufacture, and composition of chocolate. Different types of chocolate will be explained including cacao percentages, varietals, vintage, and estate chocolates. And, of course, no discussion of chocolate would be complete without sampling some chocolate. (Maximum enrollment: 20)
