YOUTH LEADING THE WAY Local youth were the driving force behind two recent
skate park events which attracted over 300 people to
the Golden Plains community. The 2nd annual Barwon
South West Skate Park Competition held in Bannock-
burn, and the inaugural Skate Park Competition held
in Smythesdale brought young skaters, BMX and
scooter riders from all over the State. The events
provided significant developmental opportunities for
local young people with a whole day workshop, de-
livered by the YMCA Action Sports Team, designed
to provide these young people with the skills to
manage and plan skate park events in their local
area. Skills gained included event and risk manage-
ment, budgeting, film/photography, judging, emcee-
ing, and promotion/marketing.
Following the success of these skate park events,
other local young people have put their hand up to
assist with the planning of National Youth Week ac-
tivities, including the 3rd annual Golden Youth
Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on Friday
17 April in Bannockburn where young people will be recognised for their positive contribution to the Golden Plains community. For
more event details or information on how to get involved in your local community contact the Golden Plains Youth Activities Officer,
Sarah Dalton (o3) 5220 7177 or email [email protected]

FAMILY LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAM The Haddon Community Learning Centre has some funding for
learners with children who are undertaking Victorian Government
education and training in any of our
pre- accredited courses as we are an accredited Learn Local organisa-
tion.
The funding is to provide for occasional child care services if you re-
quire them whilst you are undertaking your elected course. The pro-
gram allows funding where the cost of child care is a barrier to eligi-
ble learners to undertake a course.
There are eligibility requirements to be met as set out by the State
government authority but please call and we can assess your eligibil-
ity for the funding.
Phone 5342 7050 to talk to the manager if you are interested in any pre-accredited training (see Term 2 course guide in

With over 30 years of experience Pauline's
expertise covers a full range of techniques
from appliqué and hand work, to machine
piecing and quilting.
Pauline began her career in the 1980s as a
travelling patchwork and quilting tutor, com-
missioned by the Queensland Arts Council.
She has been a featured tutor at the Australasian Quilting
Symposiums, the Stitches and Craft Shows and other
craft shows throughout Australia.
With a focus on educating quilters she's organised a mul-
titude of workshops, retreats and events over the years,
including the Outback Quilters Tour. In 2000, at the
Queensland State Quilt Conference, Pauline was recog-
nised for outstanding services to the
establishment and promotion of patchwork and
quilting to their home state of Queensland.
Pauline enjoys helping others learn and perfect patch-
work and quilting. In 2006 she was instrumental in the
production of a series of sixteen educational DVDs on
patchwork and quilting of which she was the featured
tutor in three of them: “The Joy of Piecing,”
“Foundation Paper Piecing” and the method, ‘Chenilling.’
She believes when teaching it's important to focus on the
process, such as accurate cutting and accurate piecing,
and that the equipment used is a vital part of this
process. Pauline also feels that when the proper tools are
used correctly, making a quilt is easier and more enjoya-
ble, and the quilters efforts are rewarded with a better
result that will come together much quicker as well.
Experimenting with the numerous gadgets available in the marketplace, Pauline has acquired an in-depth knowledge of tools. When
demonstrating her favourites at Quilt Shows she continually received requests to visit quilt groups to show them how to use the
tools. With such demand the Gadget Queen demonstrations and Hands On Tool School were born.
The Haddon Learning Community Centre is proud to be presenting Pauline’s one day quilt block making workshop “The Butterfly
Blossom.” This workshop is full of fun techniques for texturising and manipulating fabric. Pauline will guide you and show you lots
of the techniques required in making these blocks. You will be able to go home and finish your quilt with confidence. It is a beauti-
ful quilt! The workshop is to be held on Monday April 27th from 10 am ~ 4 pm. Cost for this workshop is only $65.00.
For bookings call the centre on 5342 7050. We require 12 students for this course so book in now to secure your place as
this is a once only session opportunity. We have also booked Pauline for a one day special machine quilting for “L” PLATES
workshop on July 8th, so book now! See colour photos and detail in the course guide in the centre pages of this newsletter.

Walk is the most important event on the canine calendar. Join in the walk to fight animal cruelty at the Million Paws Walk! Register
yourself, friends and family to take part in the biggest dog walk in Australia. You can help raise vital funds for animals in need by
walking with and by setting up your own fundraising page. Fundraising is a great way to make every step count.
So make sure you register online, put your dog on a lead and join in on Sunday the 17th of May. As an added bonus this year, if you
register online and create a fundraising page, the RSPCA will send you a FREE RSPCA portable water bowl for your pooch!
Every dollar you raise will make a big difference and will help raise $500,000 to support their work with animals in need.
The RSPCA provides refuge to animals that are lost, abandoned or rescued from cruelty. They hope is to give each animal a second
chance at happiness. As a not for profit organisation, the RSPCA relies on community support to care for 'all creatures great and
small'. More than 90% of the RSPCA's funding is due to the gener-
ous support of the Victorian community. Some of the costs for
caring for these animals include: •$3,000,000 to fund the work to
rescue abused or neglected animals,$460,000 for vaccination med-
ication to give to the animals in care, $192,000 to fund our foster
care program to give animals a second chance at life. Register to
walk today and start fundraising to help animals in need at :
