Presidential Notesby Marc Bayer

Hope everyone had a wonderful summer: The second warmest 6 month stretch in recorded WNY history sure made it a memorable one. Now that the leaves are turning and we are back in full-force, I hope you are excited to continue the dis-cussion on scholarly communication at the WNY/O ACRL Fall Confer-ence, Scholarly Communication 2: Copyright and Open Access.

What’s so great about the scholarly communication and the open access movement? Academic libraries’ mission require us to be the heart of our communities, and scholarly communication turns our focus inward from publishers, vendors, and information providers to fac-ulty and students and researchers on campus. Libraries have always been about openness and accessi-bility but how well do our constitu-ents know about the open access movement? I think we would all be curious to know faculty answers to the following questions:

“How Familiar are you with DOAJ.org, the directory of open access journals?”

“How well do you agree with the following statement: Open Access Journals are important because they lead to wider dissemination

in scholarly communication, and greater usage and impact.”

“Should the two be mutually exclusive, which is a greater factor in choosing a journal to publish your research; prestige or citation frequency?

“Have you ever used Sherpa/Romeo to investigate publisher copyright policies before submitting an article to a journal?

In an age of utility, specialization, and group-think, academic librarians

questions discouraging:

“I already read the top three journalsneed for other input, and so don’t use a journal directory.”

“The top three journals I read are used by all my peers. The informa-tion is not pertinent to any other audience so wide dissemination is not a factor.”

“I care more about the citation reports for the journal I publish my article in than for anything else.”

“I care less about the functions of copyright and the publishing indus-try than getting information to my peer group.”

Still, I think we can all agree that the traditional methods of scholarly communication are becoming more and more problematic.

For hundreds of years, publishing articles in scholarly journals has been the accepted way to ensure that research is made available. This traditional model of scholarly communication is breaking down, with an explosion in the number of publications, accompanied by an exorbitant increase in journal cost.

The emergence of new technolo-gies over the past several years has allowed scholars to re-think this model and to explore alternative

-ings. Digital technologies hold the promise for stimulating new com-munication models that expand the dissemination of scholarly research

libraries.

Hopefully you can join us Novem-ber 5th to continue discussing this lively topic. See you there!
