Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia.” Ulvaeus and Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, were involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production and she has also been present at many of the premieres around the world.

The musical includes such hits as "Super Trouper,” "Lay All Your Love on Me,” "Dancing Queen,” "Knowing Me, Knowing You,” "Take a Chance on Me," "Thank You for the Music,” "Money, Money, Money,” "The Winner Takes It All,” "Voulez-Vous,” "SOS" and "Mamma Mia.” Over 65 million people have seen the show, which has grossed $4 billion worldwide since its 1999 debut. A film adaptation was released in July 2008.

As of 2020, the show has productions in London's West End, where it is the seventh longest-running show in West End history, as well as various international productions. Its Broadway incarnation closed in September 2015 after a 14-year run, making it the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history.

ballads, ABBA decided to enter the competition with their upbeat pop tune “Waterloo” instead. Their gamble paid off with a big win on April 6, 1974. Exactly 25

STAFF BIOS!Mary Lee DeWitt – Theatre & Tech Director / Choreographer. Mary danced with the Radio City Rockettes in New York City for 10 years and was the dance captain in the original Broadway productions of “The Will Rogers Follies” and “Crazy For You.” She’s a certified Theatre and Dance Educator with more than 18 years of experience directing as a Choreographer, Musical Director and Tech Director in middle and high school settings. Her greatest productions are Garrett and Rachel, both OSU alumni. When not at North, she’s fulfilling a long-term theatre sub assignment in New Albany. “I’m extremely proud of all cast that have embraced the ‘double-cast system,’ requiring the challenging task of learning and mastering two separate roles and the ability to flip back and forth in a moment’s notice throughout the production process. The entire cast has maintained focus while adapting to the rotation of people and formation changes, making me so proud. Break legs with a smile, guys – it’s finally SHOWTIME!”

Jude Berger – Costume Designer. Jude has been costuming students in Westerville Schools since 2001. Her interest in costumes started at an early age, creating outfits for her dolls. She has worked on dozens of productions in Westerville. She designed the costumes for “M*A*S*H” and “Godspell” at Westerville North, and in 2003 was invited to be the founding designer at Westerville Central when it opened. Jude has a degree in theatre from Otterbein University. She has designed costumes for the Westerville Civic Theatre, as well as North, Central, and South High Schools and also Heritage Middle School. Jude has won the Best Costume award twice from Broadway World Columbus, for “The Little Mermaid” in 2016, and “Tarzan” in 2018. She appreciates all her costume shop crew for their fantastic work and says they are all Super Troupers! Enjoy the show!

Amy Birtcher – Box Office Manager. Amy has spent most of her life involved with theatre. During her junior high, high school and college years she was involved in multiple plays each year. At BGSU she majored in Speech and Drama Education, and then was a high school director for 20 years. Here at North, she co-directed with Michael Fusco from 2003-2009 and enjoyed a plethora of great productions with the amazing talent here! She now enjoys staying involved in the theatre program by playing with tickets. She greatly appreciates the great support that our department has in the community and looks forward to enjoying this fun romp in Greece with ABBA!

George Bogrees – Master Build Carpenter. I have been working on sets in theater for about 10 years. I started by helping with “A Christmas Story,” and because I could build stairs, was put in charge of the set for the next play. I've been busy with sets ever since. I've been responsible for set construction for over 20 plays, working at various high schools and Wagnalls Community Theater. At present, I'm working on the set for the Bloom-Carroll Middle School production of “Lion King Jr.,” among others. It has been a pleasure to work with the nice people at Westerville North High School on “Mamma Mia.”

Thank you,

Donna W.!
