Cool Tools-Lesson plans used to teach the behavior expectations
OneofthemostimportantpartsofPBIS(PositiveBehaviorInterventionSystem)isthatbehavioralskillsaretaughtdirectlythroughroleplayingandmodeling.CoolToolsteachallstudentswhatisexpectedofthemandhowtheyaretobehave.Thelessonstaughtarebasedupontheneedsofourstudents.
WHS Stars- Recognition for Star Behavior AnotherpartofthePBISsystemistheuseofconsistentpositive
reinforcementofappropriatebehavior.AllstaffmemberswhoobservestudentsfollowingtheWHSStarExpectationscanissuepaperstarstostudents.Researchshowsthatpositivereinforcementisoneofthebestwaystochangeinappropriatebehavior,andmaintainappropriatebehavior.
Whenstudentsearnstarsforpositivebehavior,theyputtheirnameonastarthathastwohalves.Onehalfofthestarisplacedinajarintheirclassroom.Teacherswillpullstarsfromtheirclassroombucketstorewardtheirstudentswithprizesthattheydecidetheywanttoearn.Theotherhalfofthestarisplacedinoneoftheprizebucketslocatedinfrontoftheoffice.Theserewardschangethroughouttheyear.Someexamplesofprizesare:LunchWithaTeacherofYourChoice,GameswithMr.Danielski,oraFreeItemFromtheSchoolStore.WinnersareannouncedduringtheMondaymorningannouncements.Recognizingallstudentsfortheirpositivebehaviorisimportant,sowealsohaveschoolwidecelebrationsthroughouttheyear.
How Parents Can Support PBIS
YourhelpwithPBISisveryimportant.Weaskthatyousupportourstaffinthefollowingways:
1. RemindyourchildfrequentlyofthefourWHSStarExpectations.
2. Ifachildhasdifficultymeetinganexpectation,aproblemsolvingformwillcomehome.Thisformservesasacommunicationtotheparentandneedstobesignedandreturnedtotheoffice.Seesampleinguide.
3. Helpyourchildbepunctual.Studentsshouldarrivenoearlierthan8:15a.m.unlessonpatrol.Studentswhoaretardyaredisruptivetoeveryone,andoftenhaveaverypoorstarttotheschoolday.
4. Oursystemisconsistentandfair,soifyourchildreceivesaProblemSolvingForm(seesamplecopyinbooklet),pleasesupportthedecisionandhaveyourchildbringbacktheformsignedthefollowingday.

EveryoneatHammerschmidtcanbeaSuccessfulStar.IfwefollowourStarExpectations,wewillhaveaschoolthatwillalloweveryonetoachieveatthehighestacademiclevels,feelsafeandsecureatschool,andenjoyourtimetogetheraswelearn.
Being Safe
1. Attheendoftheday,studentsshouldreportdirectlytotheirhomeordestinationprovidedbyparentsbeforegoingtoasecondlocation.
2. Ifastudentwishestoridetheirbike,theymustgetoffandwalkitontotheschoolgrounds.
3. AtWHS,wehaveover400childrenandadultsonthegrounds.Weallneedtowalkonthesidewalksandplayground.Forthisreason,there’stobenoscooters,skateboards,orinlineskatesontheschoolpropertyfrom8a.m.to4p.m.Wedonothavesafestoragefortheseitems.
4. Stayawayfromtheretentionpond.
5. Keepsnow,sticksandmulchontheground.
6. OurhallwaysareverylongandallofusmusttraveltogettoP.E.,Music,Art,LRC,andlunch.Tomovesafely,wemuststaytotherightinthehallsandstairways.

1. Weneedtotreateveryonewemeetwithkindness,bothinthewaywespeakandact.Itisourgoalforeveryonetobepolitetooneanother.
2. Whenplaying,working,oreatingwithclassmates,usecourteouslanguage.
3. Respectthepropertyofothers.Inaschool,wesharemanyitemsplaygroundequipment,librarybooks,etc.Takecaresotheyareavailableforalltouse.
4. Respectthelearningtimeofeveryone.Whentravelingthroughthehallways,dosoquietlysoyoudonotinterruptthelearningofothers.Thiswillmeanthatyouneedtowalkinthehallswithouttalking.Inclass,listentoyourteacherandotherclassmatesasteachingisgoingonsowecanlearnfromeachother.
5. Tomakesurewecareforourschool,thereistobenogumorcandyeateninclassoratrecess.

2. Completerequiredhomeworkandworkattentivelyinclass.
3. Havethe“tools”ofyourjob(pencils,paper,books,P.E.shoes,ormusicalinstruments).Itisyourresponsibilityasastudenttohavetheseitemswhenyoucometoschool.
4. Attheendoftheday,cleanuptheareaaroundyourworkspace.Paper,pencils,andshoesshouldbeputaway.Cubbiesshouldbeneatandorderly.
5. Donotbringtoysorotheritemstoschool(thisincludescomputergames,PSP,andIPODs,etc.).Anythingthattakesyourattentionawayfromyourjoboflearningshouldbekeptathome.(Exception:ShowandTell).
6. Dowhatyouknowisright,evenwhenitisdifficult.Itissometimesdifficulttosay“no”toafriend,butifyouknowitiswrong,sayno!

1. Sometimesitishardtocompromise,butstudentsatWHSneedtobefairtooneanotherastheyplayinclass,atlunch,atrecess,andduringotherschoolactivities.

School Hours
8:35a.m.-3:15p.m.
Whenarrivingatschool,studentsingrades1-5gototheblacktopplaygroundatthebackendoftheschool.KindergartenstudentslineupinthefrontofschoolatEntrance#2.Forsafetyreasons,itisimportantthatstudentsdonotarriveatschoolpriorto8:15a.m.Studentsarenotpermittedontheschoolgroundspriortothistime.Ondayswithextremelycoldtemperatures(thetemperatureand/orwind-chillbelow10degrees)orrain,allstudentswillcomeintothebuildingandstaybytheircubby.Doorswillbeunlockedandsignswillbepostedforstudentsto“ComeIn”.
At the end of the school day, it is very important that students go directly home.Studentsarenotallowedtostayandplayattheplaygroundwithoutadultsupervision.Ifparentsarepickinguptheirchildfromschool,itisimportanttohaveaplannedmeetingplace.Discussingaback-upplanwithyourchildwillalsolimitthenumberofphonecallsfromourofficetryingtoconnectstudentswiththeirparents.

Drop Off and Pick Up from School
Once the first bell rings at 8:15a.m., students are permitted to be on school grounds.Studentsingrades1-5lineupinthebackoftheschoolontheirassignedlineupnumber.KindergartenstudentslineupinthefrontoftheschooloutsideofEntrance#2.
If you arrive once students have started to enter the building, students must bedroppedoffattheMainEntrance(Door#1).Thisallowsstudentstoentersafelywithoutdisrupting the traffic flow of students streaming into the building from their assignedentrances.
If youare running late, forany reason, studentsmustuseEntrance#1. Thisensuresthat your students are accounted for, and we have an accurate record of their lunchorder.StudentsandparentsalwayshaveaccesstothesecuredMainEntrancebyusingthedoorbellontherighthandside.
Student Dismissal
School isdismissedat3:15p.m.Studentswalkinghomemustgodirectlyhome,unlessaccompanied by a parent or guardian. Only the studentswho have parents presentmaystayandplayontheschoolgrounds.Unsupervisedstudentsmayreturntoschoolpropertyafter4:00p.m.onschooldays.

AllstudentsingradesK-5,willhaveadaily50minutelunch/recessperiodscheduledbetween11:20a.m.-12:30p.m.Seethechartbelowfordetailsaboutyourchild’sspecificlunchhour.IfastudentisleavingandNOTstayingatschoolduringlunch,itisimperativethatanoteissenttoschoolindicatingthatfact.Lunchesshouldnotbesharedwithothersinthelunchroomduetoallergiesordietaryrestrictions.AllhotlunchmonthlymenuscanbefoundonourwebsiteundertheLINKSsection.Weaskthatyoupleasenothaverestaurantsdeliverlunchforyourchild.

Attendance
Comingtoschooleachdayisoneofthemostimportantthingsthatyoucandotohelpyourselfbecomeabetterlearner.Ofcourseifyouhaveafeverorothercontagiouscondition,youdoneedtostayathomeinbed.
NotetoParents:Ifyourchildisgoingtobeabsent,pleasecalltheschoolofficeattendanceline:(827-4201)by9:00a.m.Theattendancelineisavailable24hoursaday,7daysaweek.Youmustcontactthemainofficeaboutanytypeofabsence.Donotjustemailtheteacher.PleaserefertoInsideYourSchoolsundertheParent/StudentsectionoftheDistrict44webpage(wh.sd44.org)forimportantguidelinesaboutabsencesandtardiness.
Ifachildistobeabsentfromschoolforthemorningsessionorforafullday,parents/guardiansmustcontacttheschoolbefore9:00a.m.Ifachildwillnotbeattendingtheafternoonsession,parents/guardiansmustcontacttheschoolbefore1:00p.m.Ifachildisabsentandtheparent/guardianhasnotcontactedtheschool,areasonableattemptwillbemadetocontacttheparent/guardianbyphonewithintwohoursofthefirstmissedclass.
Ifitisknownthatachildwillbeabsentforthreeormoredays,theparent/guardianshouldfilloutan“ExtendedAbsenceNotification”form(F-628)availablefromtheschool.Ifastudentistobeabsentforalongertimethanoriginallyreported,theschoolshouldbenotifiedagain.
Buildingprincipalsmonitorstudentattendanceandtardiesclosely.Parentswillreceivealetterfromtheprincipalwhenastudentaccumulatesfiveabsencesortardies.ExcessivecaseswillbereportedtotheDepartmentofFamilyandChildrenServicestoengageitsassistancetobreakthisnon-productivepattern.
Excusedabsencesarerecordedforpupilswhomissschoolbecauseofpersonalillness,bereavementorseriousfamilyillness,observanceofamajorreligiousholiday,orotherexceptionalreasonsapprovedbytheschoolprincipal.Regularschoolattendanceisimportanttoacademicsuccess.Vacationsandextendedabsencesarestronglydiscouraged.
Teacherswillhelpastudentmakeupworkmissedduetoanexcusedabsence,andfullcreditwillbegivenforallsuchworkcompletedbythestudentwithinareasonableamountoftime.Ifastudentisabsentforanyreasonotherthanthosementionedabove,theabsenceisconsideredtobeunexcused.
The following guidelines have been established in order to correctly determine full orhalfdayattendance.
• Allkindergartenandfirstgradestudentsarerequiredtohave240minutesof instructionaltime for full dayattendance. Studentsmust attendaminimumof 120instructionalminutesforhalf-dayattendance.
• Asper state requirements,all students ingrades2 through8are required to have 300minutes of instructional time for full day attendance. Studentsmust attendaminimumof150instructionalminutesforhalf-dayattendance.
•Astudentwhoislatetoschoolforlessthan45minuteswillbemarkedtardyratherthanabsent.
Ifachildistardy,theparent/guardianisrequestedtophonetheschoolorsendanotetoschoolwiththechildexplainingthetardiness.
AllDistrict44schoolsworkcloselywithcountyofficialstoaddresstruancyissues.
Appropriate Attire
Tomaintainanatmosphereconducivetothelearningenvironment,itisimportantthatstudentsdressappropriatelyforschool.Theschoolmayrestrictthewearingofclothing,adornmentorhairstyles,etc.thataredisruptivetothelearningprocess.Forexample,topsshouldcoverthetorsoandundergarmentsshouldnotbevisible.Allgarmentsshouldcontainappropriatecontentforschool.Parentcooperationandsupportfortheseguidelinesisappreciated.
Hats Hatsarenottobeworninthebuilding.Thereareoccasionswherethestudentcouncilwillhaveathemeday,andhatsarepermittedonthosedays.Thisincludesfashionhats.
Pets at WHS
Animalsmayonlybebroughtintotheclassroomforeducationalpurposesandmusthavethepriorconsentoftheteacherandtheprincipal.
Forthesafetyandhealthofallofourstudents,dogsarenotallowedonschoolgroundsduringschoolhoursandbefore/afterschool.
Birthdays and Treats
Studentsshouldnotbringtreatsoranyotheritemstoschoolforthepurposeofcelebratingbirthdays.Teachersareencouragedtodevelopauniqueandspecialwayofacknowledgingbirthdays.PertheDistrict44WellnessPolicy,itemssuchascookies,cakes,candyandothersweetsarenotallowedduringclasspartiesorcelebrations.TheDistrict44WellnessPolicycanbefoundonthe
districtwebsiteintheparent/studentsectionunderWellnessandNutrition.
Weaskthatbirthdayinvitationsnotbepassedoutatschool.Pleasemakearrangementstotakecareofthistaskoutsideofschooltimes.
Technology Studentswillusethetechnologytoolsintheschoolforeducationalactivitiesonly.Pleaseunderstandthatanystudentmisusingtheelectronicnetworkortoolscouldhavetheseprivilegestakenaway.AllstudentsandparentshavesignedtheAuthorizationforElectronicNetworkAccessandshouldbeawareofitscontents.
Bicycle Safety
Somestudentsliketoridetheirbikestoschool.It’sagreatwaytogettoandfromschooleachday,butyouneedtoremembersomesafetyguidelinesjustforbikeriders.

AtWHS,wehavesafetypatrolstudentsatvariouscrossingsaroundtheschool.Pleasestandbehindthesafetypatrolstudentwhentheyhavetheirarmsout.Donotcrossuntiltheyallowyoutogo.Allstudentsandfamiliesshouldrespectthesafetypatrolstudents.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Studentsafetyisveryimportanttoallofus.Pleasemakesurethatthecrosswalkswithcrossingguardsareusedatalltimeswhencrossingthestreet.Nooneshouldbewalkingthroughthecircledriveareaexceptbythecrosswalk.PleasereviewtheguidelinesonthenextpagetokeepeveryoneatWHSsafe.Makesurethatyouarenotblockinganyofourneighbors’drivewaysortheviewofthecrossingguardandfollowallstreetsigns.

Therearemanystudentsinschoolwhohavesevereallergiestopeanutsorpeanutrelatedproducts.Withthatinmind,whendonatingitemsforclassroomparties,pleasedonotbringanyfoodsthataremadewithpeanutsorpeanutoils.Ifyourchildisinapeanut-freeclassroom,pleasedonotsendsnackscontainingpeanutsorpeanutoils.
No Latex Balloons Please!
IncompliancewithDistrict44policy,nolatexballoonswillbeallowed intheschool.ThisprecautionarymeasureisduetothepresenceoflatexallergieswithsomeDistrict44students.
Student Council

Lost and Found
The“LostandFound”rackislocatedintheAPR.Ifyoulosesomething,checktherack.Ifyoufindsomething,firstcheckforaname.Iftheitemhasaname,takeittothestudent’sclassroomortotheoffice.Thebestwaytokeepyourpossessionsoutofthe“LostandFound”istoalwaysputyourname(firstandlast)onthingsyoubringtoschool.
Cell phones
Studentsarestronglydiscouragedfrombringingcellphonestoschool.However,ifaparent/guardiandeterminesthisisnecessaryforastudent’ssafety,cellphoneswillbepermitted.Duringtheschoolday,allcellphonesmustbeturnedoffandlocatedinthestudent’sbackpack,includingafterschoolactivitiesandfieldtrips.Atnotimearestudentsallowedtocarrytheircellphoneswiththemduringtheschoolday.Studentswhoarenotfollowingtheseruleswillhavetheircellphonesconfiscated.Parentswillbenotifiedandwill
