February 2014
South WesternSchool District
Dear West Manheim Parents/Guardians,Here are some new ideas to promote family reading this month.
Newspaper scavenger hunt
Give your child a list of things to find in today's newspaper. Here are some
ideas:
A map of the United States.
A picture of your child's favorite athlete.
The temperature in the city where a family member lives.
Three words that begin with "w".
A movie that is playing at a nearby theater.
Don't stop reading to your children as they grow older. You will both enjoy
the chance to do something together.
Make sure your children read every day. Reading - like shooting baskets and
playing the piano - is a skill. Like other skills, it gets better with practice. Re-
searchers have found that children who spend at least 30 minutes a day
reading for fun - whether they read books, newspapers, or magazines - de-
velop the skills to be better readers at school.
Instead of giving chocolates this month, how about a book relating to Valen-tines Day.
February is the time of the year when we are encouraged to take care of our-
selves by taking care of our hearts. Students in Physical Education classes are
participating in the American Heart Associations - Jump Rope for Heart. This
annual event takes place in all four of our elementary schools, to raise money to
help fight against our Nations No. 1 and No. 3 killerscardiovascular diseases
and stroke. Please see the newsletter page with more details concerning this
event and worthy cause.
Sincerely,
Brian M. Cromer

During physical education classes for grades 3, 4, and 5, we will be holding a Jump Rope for Heart
Event. These events are held nationwide and help students learn about the benefits of regular
physical activity and heart health while they raise funds to support vital research and educational
programs.
If you choose to participate, friends and family are welcome to support your child by making con-
tributions. We ask that children do not go door to door or ask strangers for donations. To help
your child raise money the fun and easy way, you are encouraged to use the online fund-raising
tool found at heart.org/jump and click on Students Sign Up. After you have completed raisingmoney on line, print your childs online donation report and include it inside
the collection envelope.
Please do not send cash or coins. All checks should be made payable
to the American Heart Association. All contributions need to be re-
turned to school by February 14, 2014.
Thank you for your continued support!

Rudolphs Nutty Nose
By: Lauren Short
One snowy day, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer had a very BIG problem! He was playing withhis other reindeer friends, and then went for a walk in the forest. He went on and on and on. Hegot really hungry. At the end of the forest, Rudolph found a blackberry bush. He ate a lot of black-berries. After the bush was completely empty, Rudolph went back to his reindeer friends. He said,Look at my nose! Look! Its purple! Rudolph was thinking about what he could do. Suddenly hegot an idea. I will take a bath. He took a hot bath. After he was done taking a bath, his noseturned back to red. Now Rudolph knows not to eat blackberries. He does not want this to happenagain! So he decided that all he was going to eat, was red apples.
