    AN EXCURSION TOWILD LIFE SydneyBackground information for Teachers makingRisk Assessments

    The following information provides background information forteachers planning a school excursion to WILD LIFE Sydney.This information will assist teachers to prepare a RISKASSESSMENT PLAN for their excursion. For more informationcontact the Education Co-ordinator on Ph: 8251 7801

    Arrival andDeparture

    Schools should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before theallocated entry period. This will allow time to organise payment,have a quick food break and use bathrooms prior to entry.

    Group entry to WILD LIFE Sydney is staggered to avoidcongestion in the Exhibit Area and to satisfy capacity regulations.

    Groups exit WILD LIFE Sydney and assemble outside. In theinterests of public safety, groups are not permitted to gather inthe foyer or in any of the exhibit areas.

    Access to WILDLIFE Sydney

    Entry to WILD LIFE Sydney is via the front doors and the exit isat the King St Wharf end of the building. Exhibits are on threelevels and a series of ramps and lifts gives access to exhibitviewing opportunities.

    Students are advised to walk at all times, to not block corridorsand to use the ramps in a safe and responsible manner.

    WILD LIFE SYDNEY FACILITIES

    Exhibit Area WILD LIFE Sydney is a unique tourist attraction with hundreds ofthousands of visitors per year. Over 100 species are exhibited in9 natural habitats and ecosystems.

    A mixture of general public, primary and secondary students willbe in WILD LIFE Sydney at most times. Visitors are requested, asmuch as possible, to move through WILD LIFE Sydney in a oneway direction to assist with crowd control and traffic flow.

    There are a number of large animal models and interactiveexhibits such as caves and tree trunks which young childrenshould be well supervised around. Climbing on the animalmodels is not allowed.

    Caf and RetailSales

    If permitted by teachers, students may buy items from thecaf/restaurant and Gift Shop at regular retail prices. Studentsmust be supervised in the Gift Shop.

    All visitors exit through the licensed restaurant which is whollyowned and operated by WILD LIFE Sydney and strictly adheres

    to all legislation related to licensed premises.

    Toilets All toilets are located inside the facility past the Admissions area.There are toilets on both levels and in the restaurant. A toilet forthe disabled is located in each toilet block.

    NB. As there are no toilets located at WILD LIFE Sydneybefore the point of entry, teachers are STRONGLY advisedto take students (particularly K-2) to the toilets locatedunder the Pyrmont Bridge PRIOR to entry. Once inside thevenue, it is not possible to mass-toilet your group.

    Disabled Access WILD LIFE Sydney is fully wheelchair accessible.

    OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUES

    Fire Exits andEvacuation

    WILD LIFE Sydney has clearly marked Fire Exits in all publicareas and complies with Fire Control regulations. WILD LIFESydney Duty Managers have been formally trained in emergencyevacuation procedures.

    First Aid A First Aid Kit is located at the WILD LIFE Sydney InformationDesk and between 9am and 5pm there are formally trained FirstAid officers on site.

    CHILD PROTECTION ACT AND WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS

    SupervisionLevels

    Supervision of students in WILD LIFE Sydney is wholly theresponsibility of the teachers/carers. Supervisors are allowedfree entry on the following ratios:1:3 for pre-school students, 1:6 for K-2 students, 1:8 for Yr 3-12students, 1:1 for disabled students

    It should be remembered that WILD LIFE Sydney is a busy publicbuilding and students need direct supervision at all times,including in the toilets.

    Working withChildren Checks

    WILD LIFE Sydney staff are responsible for the following duties:Admission/payment procedures, meet and greet procedures,caf and gift shop sales, roving animal keepers with animals.

    At all times, teachers/carers are the direct supervisors ofstudents at WILD LIFE Sydney.

    The Child Protection Act legislation does not considerWILD LIFE Sydneyas a provider of specific services tochildren and it is therefore not necessary for Sydney

    Aquarium staff to have Working with Children checks. Thisinformation has been verified by the NSW Department ofEducation and Training.

    PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

    Insurancecover

    WILD LIFE Sydney has the appropriate Public liability Insurancein place to cover injury and damage. A Certificate of Currency ofinsurance can be supplied on request. Please call 8251 7801.

    PERSONALBELONGINGS

    In the ExhibitArea

    During your visit it is strongly advised for teachers and studentsto keep their belongings with them or leave them on the bus. For

    security reasons WILD LIFE Sydney does not have lockers orstorage for backpacks.

    WILD LIFE Sydney takes no responsibility for lost items.

    Lost property Any lost items found in WILD LIFE Sydney are placed in LostProperty, located at the Information Desk. Schools lose manyitems and students should be encouraged to be responsible fortheir own belongings.

    PAYMENTPROCEDURES

    Payment

    options

    Prior to your visit:

    Credit card payment at time of booking; cheque posted prior tovisit; EFT payment prior to visit. Tickets can be sent out prior toyour visit, or collected on the day. Students cannot payindividually.

    On the day:Bring cheque, credit card or cash for payment on the day.Tickets will be available for collection on the day of the visit.

    Students cannot pay individually.

    WILD LIFE Sydney will issue a tax invoice prior to the excursion.

    Please phone 8251 7811 with final numbers at least 48 hoursprior to the day of visit and a tax invoice will be faxed.

    STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

    Studentbehaviour

    Students should be aware that there will be other schools andgeneral public in WILD LIFE Sydney during their visit. Thereforewe ask that teachers outline the following Code of Conduct andmonitor student behaviour on the day.

    Students should:

    - behave in a courteous and responsible manner at all times- behave safely and walk, not run inside WILD LIFE Sydney

    -keep noise levels to a minimum in the enclosed space,especially as the graphics are audio-visual.- place all rubbish in the bins provided- respect the animals and follow the instructions of the animalkeepers.

    WILD LIFE Sydney reserves the right to remove any studentsfrom the building if their behaviour is disruptive, too noisy ordangerous. A teacher will be required to supervise such students

    outside the building.

    We expect teachers to ensure that this Code of Conduct isadhered to.

    This document was developed in consultation with the NSW Department of Educationand Training school excursion policy.Teachers making RISK ASSESSMENTS as part of School Excursion Planning shouldnote that WILD LIFE Sydney cannot make the assessment for you. Teachers
