    New Year Resolutions

    JANUARY 20

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the

    holidays!

Now that the holidays came and went in aash, you are now looking forward to the new

year ahead. Have you made any resolutions?

Maybe they are the same as last year because

they may not have turned out the way youdhoped. Maybe they are new ones.

The denition of a New Years Resolution is

a commitment that an individual makes to a

project or a habit, often a lifestyle change that

    is generally interpreted as advantageous.

Why are resolutions so hard to keep? Dowe set our expectations too high? Do we

give up too easily? Is there something that

we as the WLN can do to help you? I urgeyou to lean on the women of the WLN forhelp if you need it. We are here to help you

    professionally and personally in attaining

your goals. I hope you feel that you can

look to us in times of weakness whetherits helping you avoid the temptation to eat

a second helping of dessert or whether its

helping you with a professional goal of yours.

As professional women, we have a lot of

pressure to do well in business and to alsomake sure we take care of our families and

ourselves. Its quite a balancing act that we

may feel we have not been able to accomplishso we make a resolution to be better or dobetter in the coming year. We must nd a way

to change something in our lives so that we

can attain our goals and resolutions. Wouldnt

it be nice to not have to resolve to do the samething in 2009 since we succeeded in doing it

    in 2008?

Well, I found some expert advice that I

thought might help you in your resolution

success. I hope this helps in some way.

    Two University of Maryland psychiatrists

offer time-tested tips to help you prepare for

success and to help you reach your goals:

    Avoid perfectionist

    thinking. While

    we certainly

    always want to

    better ourselves, it

is healthier to thinkin positive terms

    than it is to focus

    on how much we

    fall short of our aspirations.

View setbacks as lessons for growth.

Mistakes can be and usually are

opportunities for learning. If you fall sh

of your goals, ask yourself what kept y

from achieving them and then try to macorrections.

Do not make absolute resolutions. Kee

    them realistic.

Do not keep your resolutions to yourse

Tell someone you trust about yourresolutions. It helps to share your goal

with friends, who can gently nudge you

in the right direction when you veer off

    course.

    Give them some meaning. People

sometimes make goals that are not

necessarily meaningful to them. Your g

should be something you really desire

to change or achieve, not something thasociety says is good for you to do or yo

family members would like to see you

do. If you do not have strong, internal

motivation within yourself, you will nosuccessful.

Take baby steps. Set realistic goals that

attainable and then take small steps tha

likely to be met with success toward th

    goals.

Fine-tune your spirituality. It is importo add a spiritual dimension to your goa

Good luck to all of you in 2008! May y

    attain all your resolutions!
