This school year has brought on many changes for the Housing department at Western Kentucky Universi-ty. Residence and student staffers alike were all sur-prised by the sudden an-nouncement that formerly co-ed residence hall Pearce Ford Tower would become a single gender, all female, hall while Hugh Poland hall made the change to single gender all male. “It was a shock to all of us, we didn’t really know what was going on until we got a call from a reporter asking questions,” said junior, Kelcie Smith, who currently works in PFT. Housing and Residence Life made the change as an attempt to make PFT a more desirable place to live for residence who are hesitant to live in the building because of it’s reputation. “It’s not secret that PFT has had its ups and downs, but it’s like that in every hall. The difference is,

Housing Changes be-come big issue for stud-

net staff recruitment we have over 900 residents living in one building so gen-erally more incidents would happen,” said junior Emily Dickey, who currently works in PFT This drastic change was suggested as a way to provide students a communi-ty that is more academically focused. “The main goal in Housing is to help the students that live in the halls to succeed, that why it’s important to have an environment that will help promote academic success,” said Shawn Clark, the coordi-nator for PFT currently. While those who are already in housing view this as a positive change, there are a few who have their doubts. “I understand why they would be doubtful, I am too. But I believe in what the staff and residence can offer this building. I am a firm believer in the fact that attitudes affect the outcome,” said Nhung Ding, a junior foreign ex-change student who will be working in PFT next semes-ter.

Since many potential applicants are worried about this big change, they are turning down the RA po-sition for the Fall 2013 semester.“It’s sad watching as applicants who could be great RAs turn down the position because of being uncertain about the change,” said sophomore Shu-von Powell, who will work in PFT next fall. So if you know anymore who is interested in becoming an RA, please have them fill out an application on the Housing website.

Becoming an RA is one of the best jobs on cam-pus, though sometimes it can be really confus-ing, with 15 halls around campus to learn. So we set up this guide, that separates each build-ing into their known groups in housing, that in-dicate their location around campus.
