POLITICIANS FROM all levels of government gathered alongside one of the most revered names in Australian tennis last week to offi cially open the new high performance tennis facility in Tweed Heads.

Former Davis Cup Captain and number one ranked doubles player John Fitzgerald OAM was on hand for the opening of the $8 million facility at Arkinstall Park which also includes netball courts and club rooms, soccer fi elds and a playground.

Im delighted to see facilities like this one evolving and springing up around the country, they are the heart and soul of what supports our sport, said Mr Fitzgerald.

Tennis NSW is working hard to get more young people involved in the sport and in recent years weve gone from 32,000 up to 120,000 players.

With a facility like this one I would be encouraging the club to go after a pro tour event as it certainly meets the standard required.

Earlier Aboriginal Elder Desrae Rotomah started proceedings by mentioning, during her Welcome to Country, that she grew up close by and remembers the park from before it was developed.

Even back when it was scrub it was a place where the kids of the neighbourhood came to play and I can remember many days spent here, said Ms Rotomah.

Later when it was covered with bitumen it was a great time for us

because we all got new bikes to ride there.

Tweed Shire Councils Manager of Recreation Services said the new facility, which makes up stage one of a planned Regional Sports Centre, has been a long time in the planning.

We started the project here about 10 years ago when a study revealed the need for a regional sports centre at Arkinstall Park, said Mr Brawley.

This facility will allow people in the community to play sport and

develop their skills to the highest possible level.

The park was built with $5 million from the former governments Regional Development Australia Fund and Member for Richmond Justine Elliot, who helped secure the funding, said the new facilities will be important for the local community and as a future training centre for elite athletes.

Better infrastructure for the region will increase sports participation by families, increase the involvement of school students

in these sports and the capability of schools in the region, said Ms Elliot.

The balance of the funding came from a $2.6 million contribution from Tweed Shire Council, $100,000 from Tennis Australia and $30,000 from the Tweed Netball Association.

The President of the Tweed Tennis Association Bob Tindale said local players are excited about the new facility which now has 20 courts.

The key now is getting

people to use them and its very encouraging to see how many kids are getting into programs like Hot Shots which are designed to get them interested in the game, said Mr Tindale.

Getting a top level tournament here is also part of our strategy and something we will be working towards.

Funding for the $28 million stage two of the Regional Sports Centre, which includes a stadium and indoor sports facility, has yet to be sought.
