How amazing is this video of New York artist Holton Rower pouring his artwork out. Amazing effect - and truly taking advantage of the qualities of a mateirial as it changes state from liquid to solid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6egUsZvWu4&feature=player_embedded I like the way that in some of the finished pieces the artist edits the object that was poured over out of the artwork. It leaves some incredible forms and shapes that would be almost impossible to replicate if you were not simply leaving it to gravity to predict. http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/10/view/13246/holton-rower-pour.html

Fires that started in December 2006 in the mountainous region of Victoria burned the catchment area of Gippsland Lake and other lakes in the sur-rounding area then massive flooding in 2007 washed ash from the fires along with soil rich in nitrogen into the lakes. When the temperatures warmed up the following summer blue-green algae appeared in the water, but it was different than any other that had appeared before: a new species of algae that glows in the dark appeared Swimmers who took a midnight dip in the lake in Victoria also appeared to glow in the dark thanks to a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which happens when a naturally-occurring micro-organism in the water is disturbed. The harmless "Noctiluca Scintillans" microorganism lights up when the lake water is disturbed.

Conductive inks are typically made of metallic particles such as silver or copper flakes in a retaining matrix. These inks are not widely used yet but are perfect because they allow a circuit to exist without cables. There is a brand out there that has created conductive inks safe for body painting and that have created a cool 'Humanthesizer' http://www.bareconductive.com/home.htmlThe image I chose is an interactive poster made by Michael C. Place’s post Designers Republic studio,Build™. Made for the ‘Interaphics’ show at Londons ARAM Gallery. Users interact with the piece by touching the conductive ink, this then triggered a series of events (slogans/Flickr feed/animations) beamed direct (via Bluetooth) onto the poster using a high-resolution projector. We think of magic as rubbing a lamp from which a genie appears ... i do not think this is less different! It is unbelievable to me how technology progresses, i am very excited to see what project might come out of this !

Sony and Fallon have released the Sony Bravia paint advertisement. The ad begins with a drum roll and a series of blue paint explosion. Plumes of co-lour shoot out from the ground in Glasgow’s Toryglen Estate. Two buildings explode in a plethora of colour, outside and inside. Columns of paint are thrown into the air where they burst like fireworks.

Japanese company (Ko-sin Printing) developed a way of printing that is able to embed a person's DNA into ink. This idea has been used for several autobiographies, scientists then have been able to extract particles of the DNA from the page which the ink is printed on and leading to genetic discov-eries about the person.. Patent pending..kind of creepy?

Stable Inks is a brand that is catering to the growing concern that most tattoos are not vegan. The vehicle is made up of distilled water, 99% pure glyc-erin (vegan safe), and 99% ISP alcohol. They offer a full palette of bright colors, pastels and muted tones for any design. Normally the vehicle or carrier solution that helps suspend the pigments is made of ethyl alcohol, purified water, witch hazel, listerine, propylene glycol and glycerin(from animal fats) Most pigments are made from metal salts such as iron and copper with some plant derivatives. Black pigment is typically made from burning animal bones down to charcoal.

The buildings and landscape projects that Luis Barragan had realized, all of which are in Mexico, exemplify his ability to fuse the structural tenets of traditional Mexican architecture with the vocabulary of modernism. Using color and light to define spaces, the result is at once intensely Mexican and thoroughly universal. The right image shows a comparison between the use of color in Barragan and Mark Rothko (from http://shannyblewog.blogspot.com/)

Mark Mawson, a photographer and artist, captures moments of power and movement in his bulbous, puffy, jellyfish-like paint-in-water images. With the help of lighting and a pretty awesome camera, Mawson drops amounts of paint into liquid and photographs the outcome. Some end up looking like mushroom clouds, plant life, or jellyfish, while others are simply a beautiful interplay of colors. www.markmawson.com

These are two pieces by Christopher Mercier, Fortification (2009) and Cyclopos (2010). His work, which he describes as a combination of painting, sculpture, and architecture, utilizes oil, ink, latex, enamel, and water-based paints. Mercier, who also practices as an architect, uses his sculptural paint-ings to challenge traditional distinctions between sculpture, painting, and architecture, and to encourage abstraction and unique investigations into form and space. The blocks of color pictured above are created through what Mercier calls ‘paint modelling,’ in which he allows paints to dry to varying degrees of so-lidity before applying them to a painting/sculpture. To dry paint for a project, the liquids are pre-cast into sheets or other shapes, and - once dried - cut with knives and adhered to the project. I chose this work because it speaks to our efforts within the MFA ID program - in which we are seeking to challenge teh reigning contemporary under-standing of interior design by pereciving (and creating) interiors in ways that speak to a variety of multidisciplinary considerations not always consid-ered by interior design. Mercier’s material experiments and multidisciplinary approach have led him to create work that challenges the idea of paint as pigment or surface treatment, and to propose an understanding of paint as form itself.
