What characteristics do you see in Matt’s leadership?
Mission Leader
My vocation as a diocesan leader is to be “compass and catalyst” for the mission of Jesus…
What is expected of me?
The process of making yourself more complete as a leader is driven by your evolving life story. All definitions and concepts are forged on the anvil of that story, that vision.
If there are no passions, no dreams, no reason to make things happen involving other people, then there is little reason to add leadership to your life. …Lee & King, 2001, p. 151
One who has the ability to influence the behavior of other people to work willingly towards the achievement of a mission. It involves the pursuit of understanding, skill, expertise, trust, faith, and life long learning.
Archbishop Henry J. Mansell
MISSION-DRIVEN
PASSIONATE LEADER
Vision for Catholic Schools…
Our roots…
Jesus constantly used these illustrations when speaking to the crowds. In fact…he never
spoke to them without at least one illustration.
-Matthew 13:34-35
Sr. Martha Rolley

MISSION-DRIVEN EFFECTIVE LEADERS
“…the Catholic school is distinctive in its attempt to generate a community climate in the school that is permeated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and love.”“…the Catholic school is distinctive in its attempt to generate a community climate in the school that is permeated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and love.”
The Religious Dimension of Education in a Catholic School, The Congregation for Catholic Education-Rome, 1988)
These Catholic schools afford the fullest and best opportunity to realize the
fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely to provide an atmosphere in
which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced,
service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of
our God is cultivated.
Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium
Our vision is clear: our Catholic schools are a vital part of the teaching mission of the
Church. The challenges ahead are many, but our spirit and will to succeed are strong. We, the Catholic bishops of the United States, in
cooperation with the total Catholic community, are committed to overcoming
these challenges. Adversity often brings out the best in men and women. We must
respond to challenging times with faith, vision, and the will to succeed because the
Catholic school’s mission is vital to the future of our young people, our nation, and
most especially our Church.

How will you motivate others to invest, believe and participate
in Catholic schools?
How do successful organizations and businesses answer the same question?
An excellent Catholic school system is guided and driven by a clearly communicated mission that embraces a Catholic Identity rooted in Gospel values, centered on the Eucharist and committed to faith formation, academic excellence and service.
Standards and Benchmarks for Catholic Schools
You have been requested to meet with a group of parents/guardians with preschool age children, they
are questioning whether it is worth the investment to send their child(ren) to Catholic schools in
your system – convince them.
An excellent Catholic school system adhering to mission provides a rigorous academic program for religious studies and catechesis in the Catholic faith, set within a total academic curriculum that integrates faith, culture and life.
Standards and Benchmarks for Catholic Schools
Other diocesan leadership is challenging the belief that schools are not necessary because church documents say that evangelization efforts should focus on adults and
that the resources used for Catholic schools could be directed
towards enhancing adult evangelization efforts – what evidence would you use to
showcase that Catholic schools are vital to the mission of Jesus.
What is the essential question you need to
answer in your role as diocesan leader?
