Put back the missing piece!In the good old days, when the price of crude oil was a fraction of what it is today, the accuracy

of the tank gauging methods was of lesser importance. The error margin could be quite large

without it making much difference to the bottom line. The amount of crude or refined prod-

uct in the error margin, which could not be reliably verified, was certainly considerable but

maybe not valuable enough to justify the investment in a top-of-the-line tank gauging system.

This is no longer the case. The price of crude oil has increased four-fold in just a few

years and is now so high that sizeable margins of error cost too much money. And the

trend is continuing upward.

In a large storage tank equipped with a less precise gauging system, the value of the

uncertain volume, i.e., the oil in the error margin is now so large that this alone justifies

Reducing oPeX and increasing plant efficiency.The maintenance-free Rex gauge provides reliable, exact, and continuous data about the tank’s contents and ongoing opera-tions. Switching to Saab TankRadar Rex pays for itself quickly through reduced maintenance and operation costs for your tank farm, and opens new possibilities to increase revenue through increased plant efficiency.

You no longer need to risk costly interruptions in your operations, the resulting damage, or repairs. Improved reliability and reduced maintenance work, as well as the TÜV-approved overfill alarm function, also increase safety, for both employees and the envi-ronment.

heRe’s how it is done:Precise level. Saab TankRadar Rex has an instrument

accuracy of ± 0.5 mm (0.02 in.). However, installed

accuracy is also determined by external factors.

TankRadar Rex often improves the installed accuracy

with 5 mm (0.2 in) compared with other measure-

ment methods, such as floats, displacers, mechanical

gauges, and less advanced radar sensors.

Precise temperature. The volume of the product is

also dependent on its temperature. A more exact

temperature measurement provides a considerable

reduction in the uncertainty associated with net

volume measurement. Since products in a storage

tank tend to stratify, the best measurement accuracy

is achieved by measuring the temperature at several

different levels simultaneously with a multispot

thermometer.

tanks. Cost savings are not scientifically proven and may

vary, depending on the value put on individual benefits.

tank gauging readings for volumes and mass that form the basis for calculations and invoicing must be extremely exact so that the deviation does not result in substantially negative conse-quences. this is particularly true for accounting purposes such as transfer control/verification and inventory management, and loss control.

autoMatic tRansfeR contRol and veRification Product transfers have appreciable economic implications. Precise, automatic tank gauging can be used for direct custody transfer measurement or for checking hand dips or meters.

Improving level measurement accuracy will reduce transfer uncertainty by twice as much as the reduced uncertainty in inven-tory measurement.

In addition, the reduced volume uncertainty due to a more precise temperature measurement will be a percentage of the batch transferred (0.045 % if temp accuracy is improved by a typical 0.6º C, i.e. 1º F.)

iMPRove inventoRy ManageMentInventory data is used for accounting, tax purposes, and as input for loss control calculations. The trend is toward more accurate inventory checks, both as a means of

better utilizing corporate assets, and as a consequence of more stringent requirements from fiscal authorities.

constant temperature control. The Rex gauge is designed for problem-free operation in all climates. The temperature of the electronics is kept constant regardless of the ambient temperature. This is one of the reasons for the gauge’s 65-year Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).

continuous self-calibration. You will never have to take a Rex gauge out of service for recalibration. In order to achieve the highest precision, measurement accuracy is checked continuously using a built-in digi-tal crystal oscillator as a reference.

low loss Mode. Existing still-pipes are often covered with rust and deposits on the inside, which makes it difficult for certain radar gauges to provide precise readings. Saab TankRadar Rex solves this problem with its own signal processing system, the Low Loss Mode, which means that the radar waves are unaffected by the inner surface of the still-pipe.

drip-off antennas. All our antennas have a Drip-off design according to API Ch 3.1B ed 1, making them less susceptible to condensed water contamination and product build-up, which may obstruct the radar signal. This supports the top-notch accuracy and extremely reliable readout of the Saab TankRadar Rex.
