THE STUDENT PRINCE I I I I I I

False teeth flying across the stage. and family lore learned at my parents' feet are what I think of when anyone mentions The Student Prince.

Up in Galway a few years ago a local musical society put on Romberg's famous operetta. In one scene where Karl Franz is declaring his love to Kathie. his false teeth came·unstuck (so did the love scene) and clattered across the stage.

I wasn't there that night - more's the pity-- to see Prince Karl Franz lose his heart - and his gnashers - to Kathie.

But we shouldn't laugh at the prince. He had been a county hurler and I needn't explain how he lost his front chompers.

I had heard of Heidelberg. university town on the romantic Neckar river. from my parents long before I had ever heard of Sigmund Romberg or The Student Prince.

Soon after the Second World War my parents travelled in Germany. Shortly after they arrived in Heidelberg they visited a mountain-top inn. Staring up at them from the oak boards of the counter was Sigmund Romberg's name carved into the timber.

The IORC can't bring you to mountain-top inns. but we can whisk you away to Old Heidelberg to give Sigmund Romberg the chance to cavre his music into your hearts.

Hold onto your false teeth. here we goJ Michael Bowler, P.R.O., JORC.

r [!JJ~ !l!ove .... . The Student Prince represents an almost ideal world- the world as portrayed by the writers and composers of operetta. ·

Set in fairytale palaces and inns The Student Prince is peopled with boisterous but good-natured students, flirty but pure village girls, pompous but good-hearted court officials and love-struck but dutiful princes.

The story is that of love's first bloom, the hard facts of duty and the choice that must be made between them Because the setting of The Student Prince is so romantically perfect the conflict between Karl Franz and Kathie's love and the prince's duty at the end stabs with a harsh sense of reality that brings us back to the real world as the curtain comes down.

The Student Prince was first produced on Broadway by the Schubert Brothers in 1924. · But the story had been around since the turn of the century.

The operetta based on the play Old Heidelberg by Rudolph Bleichman was adapted from the German play Alt Heidelberg which William Mayer-Forster had based on his own story "Karl Heinrich". There had even been an opera version Eidelberga Mia, perfonned in Milan in 19()!.

The Student Prince was the longest running of any of Romberg's operettas and was also the longest running operetta of the 20's.

Then times changed in America. The Depression hit the country in the thirties and the romantic operetta lost the mass appeal it had formerly enjoyed. After that Romberg's work was never again as well received as it had been in the twenties.

At 67 years old The Student Prince maintains its charm. Even now in the cynical, highunemployment, high-crime nineties there is an audience for a show brimming with sentiment, true-love, heart-break; comedy and good music. And in another hundred years -even if Romberg's work never enjoys the popularity it once did - people will still want to see The Student Prince. We hope you enjoy this production. ~ ~

INDEPENDENT OR TIED ADVICE TIED ADVICE- When you invest a lump sum, take out an endowment mortgage or purchase a pension through a bank or building society, in most cases you get "tied advice', which is information on the products of only one Company.

INDEPENDENT ADVICE- The difference in performance between Companies can be enormous and this obviously prompted the European Commissioner for Competition to recently state:

"The European Commission believes that the advice of a qualified independent Broker, provides for the necessary protection for a customer when offered a wide range of competing products' (Sir leon Brittan, May 1990).

We at Taylor Investment Group ensure that our clients receive independent advice on the whole range of investment products available.
