4 underground metro stations getgreen certification

The Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East andShenoy Nagar underground metro stations in Phase-1 have got the‘Go Green Certification’ from Indian Green Building Council (IGNC) foradopting green concepts in design, construction and operation.

These stations have received the Platinum rating and GlobalLeadership recognition from IGBC. The rating for the remaining threeunderground stations on the route is still awaited. The 13 elevatedstations on the sector had received the certification last year.

The certification addresses green features like site selection andplanning, water efficiency, energy efficiency, material conservation,indoor environment, comfort and innovation in design and construc-tion. According to an IGBC official, the green concepts have benefitslike minimal environmental impact on conventional energy and inte-gration with other modes of transport, and enhancing connectivity.

‘Amma 2-wheeler subsidyscheme’ deadline extended

By Our Staff ReporterThe deadline for ‘Amma 2-wheeler subsidy scheme’ for women

has been extended to Feb. 10.Hundreds of women are thronging the Regional Transport

Office (RTO) in Bharathidasan Colony, K. K. Nagar to apply forlearner’s license as it is one of the criteria for availing of thesubsidy under the scheme. Additional staff have been deputedto manage the rush and issue the license the same day.

The scheme is set for launch on Feb. 24.Woman in the age group of 18 to 40 years with a valid driving

license can apply under the scheme. The government is offering 50% of the vehicle cost upto a

maximum of Rs. 25,000 as subsidy for the beneficiaries.According to officials, 91,200 women from Tamilnadu

have applied for driving license and learner license (LLR) in oneweek. They said that it is almost equal to the number ofapplications usually received in a month in RTO offices acrossthe State.

Beggar held forragpicker’s murder

picker, was allegedly murderedby R. Paramasivam (a beggar/platform dweller) outside a barin K. K Nagar.

According to the police,Jayakumar tried to robParamasivam.

When he resisted, Jaya-kumar bit Paneerselvam,which led to a quarrel duringwhich Paramasivam blu-dgeoned Jayakumar to deathwith a heavy stone and fledfrom the spot.

Passersby found Jaya-kumar’s body and informed thepolice.

Initial investigation pointedto the accused who wasarrested the same evening ashis fingerprints matched thoseon the blood-stained stonefound near the murder spot.

Paramasivam confessed tothe murder and was remandedto judicial custody.

grown pulses and chekku oil on fixed dates in various parts ofthe city. “We have regular customers who buy a month’s stockfrom us,” said Jagan. “We procure the goods from organicfarmers in Koli Hills,” he added.

The items usually sold include lentils, appalam, tamarind,cumin seeds, coriander seeds, mustard seeds, millets, ragi,semiya, vadam, soya balls and chekku oil.

Their popularity has grown by word of mouth and they nowhave more than 200 regular customers in the neighbourhood.

MTC scraps daily,weekly pass

Metropolitan TransportCorporation (MTC) has scrappedthe daily and weekly bus passand increased the fare on thesingle route monthly pass. Thereis no increase in fare on the Rs.1,000 all route monthly pass.

The minimum fare onmonthly pass for single routeshas been increased from Rs. 240to Rs. 320 for 4 stages and themaximum fare for 21 to 23 stagesfrom Rs. 510 to Rs. 670. The dailypass costing Rs. 50 enabledcommuters to travel anywherein MTC buses within the city andneighbouring districts from 6a.m to 10 p.m, while the weeklypass costing Rs. 300 allowedtravel the whole week.

The daily and the weeklypasses benefited lakhs of dailywage workers and thoseemployed in small shops in thecity. The MTC move to scrapthese passes has put lakhs ofsuch commuters to hardship asthey are now forced to spendhigher on commuting by MTC.

period April 2018 to March 2019, I was told that there is a slightincrease in the tax in view of the fresh levy of 5% towards librarycess with effect from April 2017.
