The film allows us to relive the most importantmusical, personal and moving moments of sucha long and fascinating life through an intimateaccount told in the first person by the artistherself.

Her tough beginnings, her training, her doubtsand setbacks, the cities that saw her evolve andthe performances that established her nameworldwide, all appear, as do the statements ofthose who know her as woman and artist: fromthe great tenor Placido Domingo to the genialFreddy Mercury, the legendaries Claudio Abbadoand Zubin Mehta; the writer Terenci Moix; andthe ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, among others.

Montserrat Caballé has performed more than90 roles on stage and counts with more than100 recordings from which 40 are completeoperas. She has performed in the fivecontinents and her recordings have beenlistened to in the Cosmos. She has sung inhistorical places like Aspendos, Epidavros,Merida Roman Theater and also in the KremlinGreat Conference Hall, Pekin Nation Hall, theWhite House in Washington and the Auditoriumof the General Assembly of the United Nationsin New York. Caballé has performed beforeaudiences of more than half million people inTel Aviv, Saratoga and Berlin, among others.

BiographyMontserrat Caballé was born in Barcelona on the12th of April 1933. Coming from a humblebackground, her family went to great efforts so thatshe could study music at the Superior conservatoryof the Liceo. In 1956 she moved to Switzerland whereshe formed part of the Opera of Basel company.Between 1957 and 1959 she opened a repertoirewhich included Mozart and Strauss. Between 1959and 1962 she became part of the permanentcompany of the Opera of Bremen. In her final yearthere she earned her first contract to sing in the Liceoin Barcelona where she opened the Arabella byStrauss and played the feminine roles of DonGiovanni by Mozart and Madame Butterfly byPuccini. Her launch onto the international stage tookplace on 20th April 1965 in New York when sheunexpectedly substituted Marylin Horne in theLucrezia Borgia by Donizetti. Up until that momentshe was unknown, on finishing her first aria thepublic dedicated an ovation of twenty minutes andthe local press added: ‘No previous publicity couldhave predicted the tremendous impact thisGoyesque woman would cause upon the publicpampered by the delights of Callas and Sutherland.When Caballé began her first aria there was a changein the atmosphere. It felt as though everyone hadstopped breathing’.

With a somewhat uncommon versatility, MontserratCaballé has alternated her operatic performanceswith recitals and concerts and has sung as soloistwith the most prestigious orchestras and conductorssuch as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein,Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Claudio Abbado, SeijiOzawa, Riccardo Muti, Sir Colin Davis and CarloMaria Giulini. Her collaboration with Freddie Mercuryon the album Barcelona and with Vangelis in "Marchwith Me" finally conquered the widest public.

Montserrat Caballé is also known for her passion forreviving works that have fallen into oblivion. Whenthe majority of sopranos tend to progressivelyreduce their artistic activities Caballé, over the lasttwo decades, has devoted herself to the research ofan uncommon repertoire, including Armide by Gluck,Les Danaïdes by Salieri, Medea and Demophon byCherubini, Ermione e Il Viaggio a Reims by Rossini.

She owns numerous prizes and internationaldecorations, including the Order of Isabel la Católica,Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres de France,Académica de Honor and Gold Medal from theAcademia de las Letras, Ciencias y Artes of Italy.Since 1974 she is honorary ambassador of the UnitedNations and Good Will ambassador for UNESCO.
