Summer is on the way (hopefully)

I am pleased to see that the second phase on Poldory has finished and the villagers have all settled in to their new homes.

Look out for events in the village advertised on the Parish notice boards.

I am still getting complaints about dog fouling in the street and also on the mineral footpaths.

Will the dog owners who are letting their dogs foul these areas please pick up.

The Parish Council meets every third Monday start 7.15pm in the Mills Hall. All villagers are welcome to public clinic to share any

concerns or ideas they may have on village improvements

Local needs housing is very important to rural communities and the second phase of housing at Poldory in Carharrack has been completed and are all occupied by local people. The young families are very happy with

their new homes (some for rent and some shared ownership) they were also delighted with the quality of finish and room sizes. I was delighted to be there to see the keys being handed over to the young family who for

them will be their first home together.

European Metal Recycling United Downs.

An appeal against Cornwall Councils Planning Committees decision to refuse the application had been lodged at the last minute. The appeal against was heard on the 19th February 2014 at the Council offices

Dolcoath Camborne. I attended and presented evidence to planning inspector giving the reasons why the planning committee refuse planning permission for a fourth scrap yard at United Downs. The inspectors

decision has now come through and he has supported the appeal by EMR which means they now have planning permission to site another

scrapyard at United Downs. This decision by a government appointed planning inspector is very disappointing news and will no doubt have a

major impact on the three existing well run family businesses.

My Community trust funding financial year 2013/14 has now been allocated, I will from May receive £2000 which will be available for

Reaching lengths of up to 12m, Basking Sharks are the largest fish in British waters and the second largest in the world after the Whale Shark. One of only three plankton feeding shark species, these gentle giants re-appear in our Cornish coastal waters each spring and summer.

Despite their size, surprisingly little is known about the life history of Basking Sharks, partly because of the difficulty of conducting field research on an animal which spends most of its life out of sight, deep underwater. However, from May until late October along the west coast of the UK, Basking Sharks can be seen feeding on plankton blooms at the sea surface - this provides researchers and scientists with a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these evasive creatures.

Here in Cornwall good viewing points are Falmouth, Lizard Point, the stretches of coastline from Lands End and on out through St Just, Godrevey, & St Ives.

The largest reliably recorded basking shark was 40 ft (12.2 m) in length. However, the ‘Stronsay beast’ was a large carcass that washed ashore on the island of Stronsay in the Orkney Islands, in 1808. The carcass measured 55 ft (16.8 m) in length, but as part of the tail was apparently missing, the animal was longer than that. There are a number of suggestions as to its species, one being that it may have been a basking shark.

If you are in the water with them, snorkelling or in a canoe, do not venture too close. Despite appearing to be slow moving and docile, if surprised or startled, they will dive quickly and in the process they

thrash their tails from side to side, and that would be like being hit by a truck.

Not a lot of people know this:

Bodmin Moor is the granite moorland in northeast Cornwall, It is 208 square kilometres (80 sq mi) in size, and dates

from the Carboniferous period of geological history and is one of five granite plutons in Cornwall that make up part of the Cornubian batholith.

However, the name 'Bodmin Moor' is relatively recent. It was an

Ordnance Survey invention in 1813. Prior to this it was known by the

Cornish as Fowey Moor, after the River Fowey, which rises within it.

MARIE COMPLETES THE MARATHON

Many thanks. The cake sale I held

in the Mills Hall raised over £200

and I would like to thank everyone

who contributed or attended.

I completed the marathon in four

hours and 34 minutes but didn't

manage to obtain my target of four

hours due to blistered and

bleeding feet.

I managed to raise over £2500 for the Samaritans however

and I hope to run for them again in London next year.

TRIVIA

The modern Athens Marathon commemorates the run of the

soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield at the site of the town of

Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C.

Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message

"Niki!" ("victory"), then collapsed and died.

The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course

and it's the same course used in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.

The legend of Pheidippides was honored by a 24.85 mile (40,000

meters) run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens.

Can facebook improve the mobility of the residents of Carharrack?

The bus services are becoming less frequent and the fares have gone up. Many people without cars are finding getting around, especially on Sundays

and in the evening, increasingly difficult. I’m sure that many people with cars would like to be able to help out. This facebook page should make this

possible.

A facebook community page has been set up called ‘Carharrack Car Sharing’. If you have a facebook account it can be easily found by typing the name of

the page into the search box at the very top of your facebook home page. (If you do not have a facebook account but have an internet connection it

takes only a minute to set one up and it is quite free.)

The purpose of the page is to try to match people who need a lift in the local area with drivers who have empty seats and would be happy to carry a

passenger. You don’t have to be a car owner to join in.

If you would like to find a lift or you would be happy to take a passenger on a trip (e.g. to Truro or Redruth) then type your request into the ‘status’ bar

(it says ‘what have you been up to?’). The individuals concerned can then make arrangements between themselves by adding ‘comments’ to the

request.

It’s up to you now, the residents of Carharrack, to become even better

neighbours.

This general area of Cornwall is recognised as a major player in the

mining industry of days past. Did you know that Dolcoath, between

Camborne and Bray, is perhaps Cornwall's most celebrated mine,

it was already working by 1778 and was 960 feet deep.

By 1864, equipped with its ten engines, seven water wheels, and a

man-engine, it employed about 1200 people. Underground working

ceased in 1920 by which time the bottom level was at 3,500 feet,

the deepest of all the Cornish mines.

CARHARRACK CHURCH For more details, please ring The Reverend Ann

on 01209 820788

Dear Reader,

I am writing this letter in April. Out in the garden buds and shoots are beginning to show – all memories of the catastrophic rains of last winter have evaporated – the earth Is warming up, birds and insects are hard at work and once again and we are filled with hope for the days ahead. By the time you read this letter, we shall be struggling to keep on top of the growth which overtakes every garden, field and hedgerow – the grass will have grown, the brambles will be out of control and we shall probably be trying to conserve our water again.

We have just celebrated Easter and all our churches were filled with happy, joyous people celebrating because light has come into our lives – the light of the risen God. In that light we have hope.

However, we have to face it, the church experience is not for everyone and it may not be for you. But don’t think for one minute that we get away with having no God in our lives – God is in all of our hearts, whether we like it or not. We all have choice – we can do the right thing or the wrong thing – we can relate to one another – we can delight in the small details of existence which surround us – the opening bud, the smile, the shared pleasure – and most of all, hope.

May God be with you in your lives now and always.

Ann

THE MILLS TRUST

We are pleased to say that the Mills Hall remains very busy as we look forward to

hosting Summer’s traditional events

The first of these will be the free tea and

entertainment for all senior citizens in the village, organised by the Mills and Wakem Trust. Saturday July 5th is this year’s date.

Numbers attending this very pleasant afternoon have dwindled of late, which seems a shame when there are many people living alone in the village and this an ideal place to make new friends.

Where else can you have a free tea, good company, excellent entertainment

and still get home in time to watch your choice of Saturday night TV?!

On Sunday 10th August the annual ecumenical outdoor service in the Mills Hall car park. This is a very informal service, and is open to those of all faiths and none. Hymn singing will be accompanied by the Carharrack & St. Day

band. If wet in the Mills Hall, where tea and biscuits will be available after

the service, in all weathers.

Very good news - the Carharrack Players are in rehearsal for a traditional Summer Musical show, much missed for the past 2 years. Watch the village

notice boards for more details.

Many thanks to all regular users of the Hall: the dancers , the dog trainers, the artists, the actors and singers, the instrumentalists, those who sew and

knit and those who dispense tea and friendship.

Thanks also to members and collectors of the 200 Club, who raise funds to

help with the upkeep of the Hall.

No thanks at all to the person who threw the stone which cracked one of the

Hall’s front windows!

The Trustees look forward to seeing all but the last mentioned at the Hall very soon.

Don’t Forget to call 821181 when planning your meeting or party.

CORNISH RECOGNISED AS MINORITY GROUP

By Editor:

As I understand it the move announced by the Government means that the indigenous people of Cornwall will have same rights and protections as

other Celtic groups in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Certainly there are many who would like to move a step further to a Cornish National Assembly where the Cornish authority is allowed to make

more independent decisions on its governance.

I understand that the detail of what the recognition means in practical

terms is still being worked out.

A discussion on a webpage revealed a mixed response, with one Cornish person writing: "Do we really care? What difference will it make to us? None. Will it help me find a job in Cornwall now I'm made redundant, no.

So what's the point?

Another added: "I already knew I was Cornish. What I don't need is some

mumbo-jumbo to tell me that."

Despite this, many of the comments were supportive of the move, with

many adding they are "Proud to be Cornish".

But if anything is to be learnt from Cornwall's Celtic cousins, having

minority status may not be worth getting excited about.

Emyr Lewis, a senior fellow in Welsh Law at Cardiff University, said the

impact of minority status on Wales had been "insignificant".

He said: "It is good that it is there and that the Welsh language and culture is recognised by the UK, but the actual impact has been relatively small. For the Cornish however, and the Cornish people, it could be more. The reason is that the Cornish minority have not traditionally been regarded in the same way as the Welsh, Scots or Irish have. So I think this is a positive step. It could be even more valuable in the case of the Cornish because it affirms the respectability, in international law terms, for people who consider themselves Cornish and removes them from being marginal."

We are holding another Ceilidh (Barn Dance) with the inimitable Chris

Humphries and The Falmouth Session on Saturday 14th June at the Mills Hall. Doors open at 7.30 and the dancing will begin at 8pm. Tickets £6 adults, £2 under 16s. These events are great fun and you don’t need to

know any of the dances as Chris calls out the steps and shows us all what to do! You can bring your own drinks and snacks, but we will also be

providing tea and coffee in the interval.

On 20th and 21st June, RAOSTYS, the Youth arm of the Redruth Amateur Operatic Society, will be staging Romeo and Juliet up at the Amphitheatre

on Carn Marth – do come along and support their first venture into the slightly scary world of outdoor theatre and hopefully they will become an

annual event....

And talking of Annual events, Miracle Theatre will be back with us on August 9th with The Tempest. They have clocked up 30 years of

performances, with over 20 of them being performed on Carn Marth –

something of a record?

We will also be holding another (our 7th!) Carn Marth Day. The tentative

date for this is August 10th, but check our website nearer the time. This is a free, afternoon event and usually includes music, dancing, wellie throwing,

wellie dancing(!), pond-dipping, a bracken-influenced scarecrow competition and other entertainment. Bring your own picnic and food to

cook on the communal barbeque.

We are still fighting the battle against people leaving litter on our beautiful Carn, unfortunately especially around the pools. Huge thanks as usual to those wonderful folk who walk on the hill armed with bags to gather up

other people’s rubbish in between our periodic official litter picks.

We are always looking for new members of the Trust (annual membership

£1), but even if you just want to join the mailing list, do get in touch.

Ring 01209 821673 for theatre and general information or email

[email protected] for membership and mailing list. Hope to see lots of you at our events this year!

DOG MESS

Page 39 www.carharracknews.co.uk

By Editor: Further to the comment made by Brenda on P3, I would like to

add that I have also received a number of letters and emails raising concerns on what is seemingly an increasing problem.

Here is a typically themed letter from a concerned Mum: There have been discussions in the village between parents who are concerned

with the amount of dog poo the kids and prams are going through, the only problem I find with this village, which is a shame.

Just wondering if you are able to put an item in the news saying this please? something along the lines of please be considerate of pram users and children as paths are small so even if your dog poos on the side in grass, prams and children still walk though it. Also some dog owners feel that if horses can do it why can't dogs. Horse poo is no problem as it does not stick or stink as much as dog poo. shoes and wheels needs heavy cleaning to get it off. sorry to put this on you but it's the only idea I can think of to kerb it a bit, I know there has been an item on this in the past but maybe another gentle reminder may improve things.

Consider your neighbours, please clean up after your dog. Bag it and Bin it.

Eric Rabjohns Society President

First Old Cornwall Society was founded at St. Ives in 1920

The Federation of Old Cornwall Societies (FOCS) was formed in 1924, on the initiative of Robert Morton Nance, with the objective of

collecting and maintaining "all those ancient things that make the spirit of Cornwall — its traditions, its old words and ways, and what remains to it of its Celtic language and nationality". The motto of the federation--as written on their web site--is "Cantelleugh an brewyon

ues gesys na vo kellys travyth", which translated into English is "Gather ye the fragments that are left, that nothing be lost".

The motto in the OCS logo is the Cornish phrase King Arthur is not dead.

Richard Trevithick (1771-1833)

Trevithick day in nearby Camborne was its usual spectacular display of steam engines both large and small. Trelowarren Street was packed with street traders and the local shops open. Traditional dancing in the street, the pipe band and of course the crowds all added to the atmosphere. Even the rain didn’t dampen the holiday feeling. But what about the man himself.

Richard Trevithick was born in a cottage a mile or so from Dolcoath Mine, where his father was a mine Captain. His curiosity about the engineering aspects of the mining area that he grew up in started at an early age, and this led to a career during which he pioneered the use of high pressure steam, and increased the efficiency of the engines used to pump water from the lower levels of Cornwall’s tin and copper mines.

Trevithick’s inventive mind was never still - his ideas ranged from the first successful self-powered road vehicle, and a steam railway engine, to schemes for wreck salvage, land reclamation, mechanical refrigeration, agricultural machinery and for tunnelling under the Thames.

Trevithick’s career spanned the dawn of the industrial revolution, a time when Cornwall’s engineering prowess was the envy of the world. Trevithick spent eleven years in South America, working for owners of silver mines.

Richard Trevithick is buried in an unmarked grave at Dartford, Kent, where he was working when he died. Like many great men and women, Trevithick did not get the recognition he deserved during his lifetime. Indeed, his worth has only recently been recognised by many history books.

He did not acquire riches either; any wealth that came Trevithick’s way soon disappeared as he developed his next idea- one of his last ideas, for a competition for a memorial to the “Reform Bill”, was for a thousand feet high cast iron column with an air operated lift to convey passengers up the inside!

Carharrack Methodist Church

As I write we have recently celebrated Easter with well attended Services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday and our annual ‘Spring Effort’. Our church council has decided that it might be of interest to the magazine readership to hear from various different members of the congregation. The current congregation ranges from 2 years to 99 years of age, attendance to Sunday services ranges between 20 and 40 each week. In addition we have a Bible study group that meets most Wednesday afternoons and a coffee morning and bring and buy every second Thursday of the month.

We do have some very devout believers with long associations with the chapel and communion services are taken approximately once a month. We have a relatively new minister, a very kind and thoughtful presence Rev Mark Liddicoat 01209 217573. This is not the whole picture. Methodism is a broad church and we have a mixture of services, we have a ‘plan’ whereby the service is taken by a mixture of lay preachers, local people with faith who interpret the gospel in a variety of creative sermons. We also have ‘local arrangements’ where the congregation are invited to contribute, hymn selections, poem readings, stories and to perform musical pieces.

So what sorts of people come, kind friendly people that form a very inclusive community, attending when they can? I am Simon and I have gradually been drawn into the church, first occasionally attending with relatives, then being further involved as a church steward and more recently becoming a member. What do I enjoy the most? I suppose I take the opportunity to reflect during services and prayers, a really enjoy singing and we are very lucky to have several very talented accompanists but most of all it’s about sharing time with others. As a widower I have been very supported by the church and its members.

Another regular member of the congregation, Carole Norris, told me, “I remember walking in on my own feeling nervous and apprehensive at first but the welcome I received was so genuine and caring I felt so at home and part of a loving family. This feeling has not changed in the two years I have been attending the Sunday morning services. One of the highlights of our services is the young people of the church Sunday school singing before going onto their various activities with family and church youth leaders. We are very lucky to have Lilian Davies and Mabel Thomas who play organ and piano beautifully together during our services. Services are every Sunday at 10.45 followed by tea and biscuits and sometimes cake.”

So you are very welcome to come and see if this would be something you would like to be part of.
