PROSPECT OUTLOOK

The Providence Bruins are in the midst of an intriguing Calder Cup run in the AHL playoffs, in the team’s fi rst postseason appear-ance since 2009.

Providence overcame a 0-2 defi cit in the opening round of their best-of-fi ve series against the Hershey Bears to win the next three contests includ-ing two road games. The P-Bruins followed that success up by winning both home games in the second-round best-of-seven against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In the fi ve wins, the offense has come alive, led by veterans Jamie Tardif, who leads the club with seven goals (in as many games) and Chris Bourque, whose 13 points paces the team and league (along with Syracuse’s Tyler Johnson).

However, the unexpected young playoff hero, thus far, has been Provi-dence centerman Carter Camper, who recorded his fi rst professional hat trick and the game-winner in a rousing come-from-behind victory against Hershey in Game 4.

The undrafted free agent who signed with Boston after a stellar collegiate career with the Miami University Redhawks in 2011 makes up for what he lacks in size (5-foot-9, 173 pounds) and pure speed with outstanding hockey sense, vision and a slick stick. His six goals and 11 points is sec-ond to Bourque, but Camper’s timely offense has been integral to making sure Providence survived to see the second round after such a disappoint-ing start to the 2013 playoffs at home. His ability to slip through seams in defenses, take the puck to the net, and provide opportunistic scoring has given opponents everything they can handle.

Camper, who turns 25 in July, battled nagging injuries and was limited to just 57 games during the regular season. The Cleveland-area native is fully healthy and has found a way to take his offensive game to another level when it matters most. Even if Camper’s physical traits don’t jump out as an ideal fi t for the NHL, he did not look out of place during a three-game big league call-up during 2011-12 (one goal), and he’s been productive at every level in his young career. For Providence, Camper’s early explosion could not have come at a better time, and the team is reaping the benefi ts.

Two-way forward Craig Cunningham has shown signifi cant progress this season in his second full AHL campaign. Like Camper, the former WHL captain of the Vancouver Giants, who fi nished his major junior ca-reer with the Portland Winterhawks, is undersized, but highly intelligent and competitive. Cunningham fi nished second to Tardif in Providence goal scoring during the regular season with 25, and manages to fi nd ways to score in key situations. He tallied the crucial tying score in Game 4 against Hershey and scored the eventual game-winning goal in Providence’s 8-5 victory over the Penguins in Game 1 of the second round. Cunningham also assisted on Tardif’s decisive goal in Providence’s Game 2 triumph.

Even if Cunningham may not possess elite straight-line speed, he’s an elusive skater who sees the ice well and effectively diagrams plays before they fully develop. His hockey IQ and good hands allow him to generate quality scoring chances, and the 22-year-old is stepping up his production at the right time.

Other Providence youngsters who have contributed positively to the team’s fortunes include 2009 fi rst-rounder Jordan Caron (two goals, sev-en points) and Ryan Spooner (two goals, fi ve points). Their youth and tal-ent makes the Providence forward group an even more diffi cult challenge for opposing defenses to contain.

Defenseman Kevan Miller has long been a stabilizing defensive pres-ence on the Providence blue line, but his fi ve assists, through four games, have been a source of unexpected, but welcome offense. The mobile and rugged former University of Vermont captain will be even more important going forward as both the Boston and Providence defense corps are de-pleted, necessitating the recalls of Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug to the big club as injury replacements.

In net, Niklas Svedberg got off to an uneven start, but rode the wave during Providence’s fi ve-game winning streak, getting help from the of-fense while he worked through the rough stretches. He is coming off his best start of the playoffs, posting 38 saves. With his size and quickness, Svedberg is diffi cult to beat on the fi rst shot, and while his play at times gets a little scrambly, he battles through traffi c to locate pucks. All year, he distinguished himself with an ability to make the big save with the game on the line. While Svedberg’s postseason stats are not up to par with his regular season numbers, his 5-2 record speaks volumes for where the team is right now.

With the series shifting to the road, Providence will be tested, but the team has demonstrated notable character to bounce back and is rounding into form as the AHL’s most accomplished team during the regular season.

MATT BARTKOWSKI

PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

In late March, as the trade deadline was looming, Matt Bartkowski thought he would be on his way to Calgary, with rumors swirling that he would be involved in Boston’s trade for Ja-rome Iginla.

On May 13, in only his second playoff game, Game Seven against the To-ronto Maple Leafs, and arguably the most pressurized game of his career, he scored his fi rst NHL goal - as a Boston Bruin.

When the Iginla trade fell through, it left the defenseman in what could have been a tense situation for a few days. But, understanding the busi-ness side of the NHL, and being the easy-going 24-year-old that he is, Bartkowksi took it in stride.

“They like my play, they want me here, it’s just part of the game,” he had been told by the Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling to know that I have the potential, at least they think I have the potential, to be a pretty good player in the future.”

The future didn’t take all that long.

His fi rst NHL goal, and fi rst playoff goal, put the Bruins on the board fi rst and got the crowd at TD Garden to erupt. What happened in the next 40 minutes wasn’t all too exciting for the Bruins - and their fans - but at the end of the night, following the three-goal third period historic comeback and overtime win, Bartkowski got to enjoy the ability to help Boston into the second round.

Before joining the Bruins, the blueliner had just fi nished helping Boston’s American Hockey League affi liate, the Providence Bruins, overcome an 0-2 defi cit in their fi rst-round series against the Hershey Bears to win three straight and advance to the second round. He assisted on fi ve goals in the series.

“Bartkowski had put in a lot of work prior to Game Seven, as he was play-ing at a very high level in Providence and in all key situations,” said Bruins Assistant Manager Don Sweeney. “Matt deserves full credit for respond-ing to the challenge and trusting his abilities to execute, regardless of the pressure and his inexperience in the NHL playoffs.”

“He earned the trust of the coaches by skating with authority, making strong decisions and playing well.”

An injured Boston back end was without veterans Andrew Ference and Wade Redden, and in Game Seven, along with Dennis Seidenberg, who was injured early in the game. It was up to Bartkowski, and the young Dougie Hamilton, to step up - and step up big.

The defenseman who played 11 games this season with Boston, and 56 with Providence, played a career-high 24:51 during the Game Seven win. He was poised with the puck, evidenced by the patience he showed on his goal, and made the smart plays.

“You have to fi nd a way to give credit to those two young guys on the back end—Hamilton and obviously Bartkowski,” Coach Julien said follow-ing Game Seven. “Bartkowski was moving the puck and carrying it so well tonight, and he scored a big goal for us.”

“You talk about people coming in, well we were minus three real good veterans in our back end, so that’s half your core, and those guys come in and do a heck of a job.”

Ever since Bartkowski had fi rst in-season recall of 2013 on March 22, the blueliner has looked more and more comfortable with each game he has played.

He was reassigned to Providence on April 26 for their playoff run and to get in game-time, and it certainly paid off, as the defenseman looked more than ready for his fi rst-ever Game Seven against the Leafs. In his playoff debut on May 10, the D-man only played 6:40, as the B’s trailed for most of the game.

“I’ve been playing playoff hockey down there. It’s not NHL, but it’s still playoff hockey,” the blueliner had said, on feeling confi dent heading into his fi rst NHL postseason game.

“Still the same mentality, the same style of play. And I played against To-ronto in the regular season. I’ll be all right.”

Similar to Boston defenseman Johnny Boychuk, Bartkowski exudes a calm, cool, collectedness off the ice, that translated onto the ice for one of the biggest games (or at least most memorable) of his career.

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, really, how poised the blueliner was in Game Seven. He may not have played a playoff game in 2011, but he was along for the ride as a ‘Black Ace’ and saw the drive and dedica-tion and sacrifi ce that went into that run. He also hoisted the Stanley Cup.

With the Bruins’ back end on the mend, Bartkowski could have a signifi -cant hand in the playoff push this time around, and he has no doubt in his ability to help his team.

“All in all, it’s the same playoff hockey everywhere. It’s just different speed, size, and pace,” said the defenseman.

“Now I know how to play and I know that I can play my game at this level.”

SETH GRIFFITH

AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT

Seth Griffi th was celebrating a Game 7 victory of his own when he saw the Boston Bruins epic comeback against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the decisive game of their fi rst round series Monday night.

A fi fth-round pick of Boston (131st overall) in 2012, Griffi th helped secure the Robertson Cup with two assists in London Knight’s 3-2 win over the Barrie Colts (and fellow Bruins prospect Anthony Camara) in the seventh game of the OHL Championship.

“I’m excited,” the 20-year-old Griffi th told BostonBruins.com. “We’re the fi rst team in Knights’ history to win back-to-back OHL championships. The team’s very excited and we’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished this year. At the same time, it’s in the back of our heads what we did last year. We lost in the Memorial Cup Finals in overtime. We want to go into this tournament and get some redemption.”

The Knights want to make sure they take care of business this time around. They will take on the host Saskatoon Blades in the fi rst game of the round-robin portion of the Memorial Cup on Friday in Saskatchewan.

“Our goal at the start of the year was to part ourselves in the position to have anoth-er chance to win a Memorial Cup and we’re on our way to doing that,” said Griffi th.

The 5-11, 185-pound native of Wallaceburg, Ontario has been a star for London during the postseason, despite injuring his hand prior to the playoffs. Griffi th didn’t feel 100 percent when the playoffs began, but was the Knights’ third-leading scorer in the postseason, notching 25 (nine goals, 16 assists) points in 21 games.

Griffi th also ended playoffs riding a six-game point streak and recorded a point in 16 of the 21 playoffs game.

“Seth missed considerable time with his injury and while it may have taken a few games to get his timing back, he has averaged over a [point per game] and has not shied away from the heavy going in the playoffs,” said Bruins Assistant General Manager Don Sweeney. “That includes absorbing two huge hits from fellow Bruins’ draftee Anthony Camara.”

It has been quite a run for the winger. Does he consider himself a big-game player?

“I think every hockey player, that’s what you dream about when you’re younger, play-ing in big Game Sevens, overtime games,” said Griffi th, who tallied 12 points in the OHL Finals. “I defi nitely like playing in big game like that. It’s great because we have a lot of big players on our team that like to play in those situations. I think that helps us a lot. That’s what’s gotten us to the point that we’re at right now.”

Feeling comfortable in big games will bode well for his potential NHL future, espe-cially if it is with the Bruins, who have gone to seven games in six of their last seven postseason series.

“For sure,” Griffi th said without hesitation, when asked if he would like to be a part of that in a Bruins uniform some day.

Griffi th caught the end of the Bruins stunning victory over Toronto from the dress-ing room on Monday night and was impressed with the determination the Black & Gold showed.

“It just shows the Bruins organization has a lot of great guys in the room, a lot of great character guys,” he said. “It’s tough to battle back, there wasn’t much time left, they pulled their goalie twice and they ended up tying it up and then Bergeron scored in overtime.

“It just goes to show they kept going and going. They didn’t give up. It was great to see they came back in overtime to win the series.”

The winger, who has spent the last four seasons with London, said his fi rst year as a member of the Bruins organization has been “great.”

“Don Sweeney has kept in contact with me all the time, helps me out with stuff he thinks I need to improve on or stuff I’m doing good. It’s been great so far,” said the Knights’ assistant captain.

“I’m just looking forward to keep being a part of it.”

“Seth’s leadership on his London team was impressive as he was on pace to lead the entire league in scoring before his injury yet his entire focus for the season was a return trip to the Memorial Cup,” said Sweeney.

“His ability to score, play two way hockey, as well as contribute on the penalty kill, shows how versatile the young winger will be as a pro next season.”

To be a successful player at the professional level in the future, Griffi th acknowl-edged that he must still seek to improve his all-around game, however.

“I think if you want to play big-time minutes in the NHL you have to play good de-fense, especially with the game now,” he said. “If you’re out of position at all, or lose your guy for a split second, it could end up in the back of your net.

“I think every player, especially in the OHL, the CHL and junior leagues, are working on developing their defensive side of the game and that’s what I’m going to keep doing.”

Despite the fact that he is still working to up his game, Griffi th was second on Lon-don, and 11th in the OHL, in points during the regular season with 81 (33 goals, 48 assists) in 54 games.

“Just working hard,” said Griffi th, on what allowed him to succeed. “I just go out there and try to win my hardest every shift, every game.”

He will be trying to win some more starting on Friday when the puck drops at the Memorial Cup. Griffi th wants to end the year a the highest note possible.

“Especially for guys that are over-agers and guys that may not be coming back to the league next year,” said Griffi th. “We’d like to try and do it for them and, obviously, winning the Memorial Cup would be a cherry on top of everything because we went on that 24-game winning streak this year.

“We had a good playoffs, we fi nished fi rst in our league, we just won the champion-ship, so that would defi nitely be a cherry on top for us.”
