Save Water With Soil
Drip IrrigationThere are multiple benefits to having drip irrigationinstalled and our customers generally see a reductionin their water bill. By applying water only where andwhen it is needed, with less runoff, deep percolation, and evaporation from leaves and soil, the uniformapplication of water from drip irrigation systems canachieve significant water savings. Watering only theroots of the plants also helps to cut down on weedgrowth in the area. Low volume irrigation systems canbe placed in difficult to water sites that are steep, oddlyshaped, or in windy areas. Other than saving money, the most important aspect of drip irrigation is theability to maintain constant soil moisture in thetargeted area, making the root zone more conducive toplant growth.
The first step in creating a drought tolerant landscape isto look at your soil. Clay soils have harder timeabsorbing moisture when too compacted. In contrast, sandy soils allow water to drain too quickly through theporous material. The ideal soil should contain a balanceof these two along with other organic material. Thissponge-like mix will absorb water and release it asplants need it.
Maximize WaterWith MulchAfter your soil is amended, the nextstep in water conservation is to addmulch in your garden beds and aroundyour plant material. This added layer ofinsulation prevents water fromevaporating quickly, keeping plantscooler and better protected from directsunlight at the base. There are manytypes of mulch that can be used, including bark chips, organic mixes andinorganic mixes. We recommendputting down a 2-inch layer to maintainconsistent soil moisture.
